WatchmenIt's a sacred comic, bobbing and weaving throughout the hallmarks of popular culture as if it were Forrest Gump's evil twin. It explores the very nature of the "blockbuster," deconstructing our popcorn heroes with the tools of philosophy, theology and morality. So it only makes sense that Steven Spielberg, the man who has shaped so much of our modern entertainment, would get an off-kilter shout-out in the new "Watchmen" trailer.

"I take this heart-attack serious, I really do," director Zack Snyder explained to me this week when he sat down with MTV to give his only interview regarding the eye-popping first trailer for his 3.6.09 movie. "If you look, there's one super-crazy Easter egg."

Patrick Wilson in 'Watchmen'Let's say by some feat of luck, skill, or thievery, you somehow got your hands on the script for the much-anticipated "Watchmen" -- you still wouldn't know everything they filmed, Patrick Wilson ("Nite Owl") tells us -- because Zack Snyder and company squeezed in "lots of little things," both as extra lines not on the page and as visuals not directly related to the scene, that they expect only hard-core fans will notice or appreciate. That is, if it all makes it in.

"Zack tried to put everything he could in," Wilson said, "and he left it to the studio to cut it and tell him what he can't fit in. For the script we started with, every scene has something different than what's on the page. That’s the fun of it, building it as you go."

For instance, in the Owl Chamber - the Nite Owl's equivalent of the Batcave ("the comparisons to Batman are perfect and right on, because no one is trying to say that they're all that different, it's all done on purpose," Wilson smiled) -- there is a picture of the Twilight Lady, a costumed female supervillain, dressed in leather, holding a riding crop. "That's a character thing," Wilson said. "We don't have a scene about her, we don't talk about her, but at least we have the picture of her." Read More...

Keanu ReevesAccording to my trusty "The End is Nigh" promotional desktop clock, there are 331 days, 12 hours, 11 minutes and 24 seconds until the "Watchmen" release as I write this. And still, it's hard for me not to imagine Keanu Reeves as Dr. Manhattan.

"I'm sure Billy's gonna change that," grinned the "Street Kings" star when I interviewed him recently. Quite frankly, Reeves is right: His friend Billy Crudup looked pretty amazing on the film's set, and he seems to be making the most of the iconic, stoic superhero role that Reeves wanted to play but had to turn down.

"How cool did that look?" Reeves asked me once we both realized that we're one of a handful of people who've witnessed Crudup in the insane, green-screen costuming necessary to create Zack Snyder's nuclear-powered, God like movie character. Read More...

'Watchmen'Three months after Zack Snyder unveiled the main players who would help bring his vision of the epic graphic novel "Watchmen" to the big screen, the acclaimed director has upped his cast by one more head.

Make that a very famous, somewhat disembodied, CG-rendered head.

MTV News has learned that actor Matt Frewer -- best known as the stuttering, sarcastic, 80's icon Max Headroom -- has joined the cast of the eagerly anticipated film. The 49-year-old thesp will suit up as Moloch the Mystic, a satanic super villain and magician.

In the graphic novel, Moloch clashes with famous "masks" like Nite Owl, Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan, before giving up his life of crime sometime before the action of the novel begins. Rehabilitated, the former vice lord moves to New York City, where he lives alone until his murder in 1985. His dead body is discovered by Rorschach, who is framed for Moloch's death. Read More...
