Turns out that yesterday's report of Benicio Del Toro starring in "Star Trek 2" as Khan weren't totally accurate — but not necessarily on the Khan front.
New York Magazine's Vulture blog reports that Del Toro will not be appearing in the "Star Trek" sequel after all, indicating that talks with the actor broke down as early as last Wednesday. The timing is an important detail, as it was last Friday — two days after BDT's apparent withdrawal from the film — that J.J. Abrams described a report of Del Toro's casting as Khan as "not true."
It seems that Abrams may have been referring to Del Toro's involvement as untrue, not the inclusion of Khan—because Vulture backs up the original Latino Review report that, yes, Khan is the villain of "Star Trek 2." Developing, as they say.

The stars of "Star Trek 2" are very excited that J.J. Abrams is returning to the director's chair for the sequel. MTV News caught up with Zachary Quinto and Anton Yelchin recently while they were promoting their upcoming films "Margin Call" and "Like Crazy," and the two expressed nothing but enthusiasm about the news that Abrams will be helming the follow up to 2009's hit "Star Trek."
"I think it would be unimaginable to make that film without J.J., so to know that he's going to be at the helm again and sort of manning the ship so to speak is pretty amazing," Yelchin said. "We all have such tremendous respect for him and he's such a brilliant human being that it gives you great confidence in going in to make this again."
Quinto echoed the same sentiments, saying that he "would never have imagined" that Abrams wouldn't have come back for the sequel. Since Abrams has many film, television and book properties up in the air, it took about two years for him to confirm his involvement for "Star Trek 2," and Quinto said he's glad that "there's no doubt about that."

Memories and condolences in the wake of R&B performer Teena Marie's death were out in force in Twitter-Wood this morning. Ice-T, Quinton Aaron, Sasha Grey and Tyrese Gibson all noted her importance and expressed their grief in posts, whether they were friends, fans or both.
Hugh Hefner's engagement to 24-year-old Playboy Playmate Crystal Harris also attracted attention today. Patton Oswalt and Seth Green both contributed opinions on that front, while Tinsel Korey shared her favorite scene from "Eclipse." You can find out what that was and see how Zachary Quinto feels about the blizzard he came face to face with after the jump.

The saga of Ronald Reagan is certainly a fascinating one. The A-list actor went on to have a pretty okay career in politics. You know, just the 40th president of the United States. No big deal.
The biopic, which carries a $30 million budget and is targeted for a late 2011 release, will be helmed by "Malice" director Jonas McCord, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. He also wrote the script, working from a pair of optioned biographies by bestselling author Paul Kengor: "The Crusader" and "God and Ronald Reagan." McCord admits to not being a fan of the former president, but being intrigued by the project as he learned more about Reagan's early life. The story will open on the 1981 assassination attempt, telling the Gipper's life story through "flashbacks and flash-forwards."
It's all going to hinge on who plays Reagan, of course. And as you might expect, we have a few suggestions... Read more...

The writers for "Star Trek 2" claim to be making "significant progress," but that doesn't mean the film is going to be ready to start filming in January 2011, according to Zachary Quinto. That said, Quinto has faith in the sequel's production team and trusts that whoever ends up directing will be true to what J.J. Abrams started.
"It's been such an interesting and now complete experience just with the first one," Quinto told MTV News. "I can't wait to go back. We have a while until we're going to do another one. It probably won't be until next year at this time. I know there are sort of erroneous reports that we're going back in January — not true, as far as I know."
The actor name dropped the men in charge of the project, who believes will ultimately make the right choices. Read more...

Last week, "Star Trek" fans were momentarily ruffled when Zachary Quinto revealed that he'll be taking a two-year hiatus from all things "Trek." Given his fantastic portrayal of Spock in J.J. Abrams' May '09 reboot, the revelation caused a little bit of a ruckus.
Quinto later clarified, reaffirming his commitment to the franchise in a post on his personal blog. The guy just wants to make sure that, coming off of "Trek" and sci-fi TV series "Heroes," he isn't pigeon-holed as a genre player. Can you really blame him? Now there's word that Quinto may be settling in for a much more grounded blockbuster: a George Gershwin biopic for none other than Steven Spielberg. Read more...

Zachary Quinto may have scared a few "Star Trek" fans when he said he would be stepping away from the franchise for a couple of years. He ran some damage control from his Twitter account today, though, to assure everyone that he would be sticking with his Spock role for the films, just not on anything related to public appearances or side projects.
Meanwhile, in trending topic new, the death of J.D. Salinger hit home for a lot of Twitter-Wood posters today, who contributed memories and first encounters with his masterpiece "Catcher in the Rye." That's the heart of the report today, but read on past the jump, and you'll also find Edgar Wright contemplating a release date for "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" and Michael Ian Black's suggestion for a Michael Cera memoir in Twitter-Wood for January 28, 2010. Most everyone who saw "Star Trek" agreed that Zachary Quinto, star of "Heroes," was an ideal choice to play Spock. He's got Leonard Nimoy's severe features, the trademark eyebrow raise, the monotone, emotionless delivery... Quinto inhabited the classic character while also owning him with some unique flourishes. Like putting the moves on Zoe Saldana.
As great as the experience must have been for Quinto to move from flagging TV series to high-profile summer blockbuster, he's ready for a break. The actor has been doing the press rounds in support of the upcoming computer game "Star Trek Online," to which he lends his voice. And, in what might be a troubling development for "Trek" fans, he told Wired in an interview that he's finished with the franchise for the next little bit. Read more...

J.J. Abrams' fresh take on "Star Trek" is looking like it's gonna be huge, taking in as much as $75 million at the box office through the weekend. The film features a whole new cast of predominantly little-known actors taking over the iconic roles of James T. Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew. So which of these up-and-comers will be the movie's breakout star? Who will everyone be talking about on Monday? Will it be Chris Pine as the young and cocky Kirk? Maybe "Heroes" villain and brand-new Spock Zachary Quinto? Perhaps Zoe Saldana’s sultry Uhura, Anton Yelchin’s navigator Chekov, Karl Urban’s doc Bones, or Simon Pegg’s beam-me-up engineer Scotty.
A case can be made for any of them. But MTV News wanted to know what you had to say, so we sent our own Tim Kash into the heart of Times Square to get your take on who will be "Trek"'s breakout star.
