I'd say 2011 was the year of the superhero if 2012 wasn't also set to gift us with a staggering array of caped and non-caped crusaders. Let's just say the last 12 months have delivered the world, to varying degrees of success, "The Green Hornet," "Green Lantern," "Captain America: The First Avenger," and "Thor."

The best of the bunch, however, is without a doubt "X-Men: First Class." What separates the mutants from their comic-book brethren is not story or visual effects or dope fight sequences — though "X-Men" has all of those things in spades — but something much rarer in this genre: characters you actually care about.

And so we honor "X-Men: First Class" as our #6 pick in MTV's best movies of 2011 list. Listen, I enjoyed "Thor" but never for a second did I buy the love story between the God of Thunder and Natalie Portman's earthy scientist. Though "Green Hornet" was a hoot, I never felt invested in Seth Rogen's bad-boy-gone-good arc. "X-Men," by contrast, gave us a level of character development you simply don't see often in superhero flicks, regardless of the year.

FROM MTV SPLASH PAGE: "X-Men: First Class" hits theaters this weekend, introducing a new group of Marvel mutants to the live-action "X-Men" universe. While you're probably familiar with the heavy-hitters of the mutant world like Professor X and Magneto, there are one or two members of this teenage team that might require an introduction.

In order to bring everyone up to speed, MTV News asked the "X-Men: First Class" cast to explain their characters' powers and place in the live-action X-Men movie universe.

"Professor Charles Xavier when we meet him is actually Dr. Charles Xavier but he becomes a professor during the course of the movie," revealed James McAvoy.

Okay, so we know that this is Shockwave, but… who the frak is this guy?!

Some more new photos from Michael Bay's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" have arrived online courtesy of Apple, including a good look at Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as Carly and… well, this guy. Perhaps I need to brush up my "Transformers" Shakespeare, but I can't place this new villain. He sort of looks like the floating Megatron head-fortress from "Beast Machines," but that would be a pretty obscure reference. Who or whatever this new machine is, one thing is pretty clear: he's not on our side.

There's more news after the jump, including brand-new trailers for "X-Men: First Class" and "Bridesmaids," plus a new take on "Zorro" that sends the masked swordsman into… the future?!

Not unlike Jake Gyllenhaal in "Source Code," you can relive the first five minutes of Duncan Jones' new film over and over again.

Yahoo Movies got the first look at "Source Code," the trippy sci-fi thriller that forces leading man Gyllenhaal to relive the last eight minutes of another man's life to try to stop a threat that will kill millions of people in downtown Chicago. Needless to say, these first minutes of the movie end with a bang.

There's more news out there today beyond "Source Code." After the jump, find out what the hold up is on "Ghostbusters III," which cast members are returning for "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" and what the Westboro Baptist Church thought of "Red State."

Nicholas HoultAnd just like that, the giants have met their match.

We brought you the news two days ago that "Jack the Giant Killer" had found three of its villainous leads in the form of Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy and John Kassir. Now, Bryan Singer's next directorial effort has a leading man as well: none other than "X-Men: First Class" actor Nicholas Hoult.

Deadline reports that Hoult has been offered the role, and although negotiations are ongoing, the deal should close quickly. It's a big step forward for Hoult, who counts "About a Boy" as his most prominent movie role to date. Yes, he was the titular boy, and now he's a 6'3" giant slayer. The times, they are a-changing indeed!

FROM SPLASH PAGE: James McAvoy has already revealed that he won't attempt to imitate Patrick Stewart when he steps into the role of Professor Charles Xavier for "X-Men: First Class." Indeed, he wants to bury Stewart's performance entirely. But McAvoy's approach begs an important question: how will his Xavier interact with Michael Fassbender's Magneto?

"I think there's a lot of room there for a real connection," McAvoy told us of his hopes for the relationship between the two "First Class" protagonists. "By the end of that relationship, there's still a kind of affection for each other. You see that in the stuff that Patrick and [Sir Ian McKellen] did together. There's a lot of love there, strangely, I think."

-- What do Ron Burgundy and Derek Zoolander have in common? Both the news man and the former male model could well be jobless, as Ben Stiller recently hinted at financial troubles for "Zoolander 2." Meanwhile, "Anchorman 2" is still fighting for survival, but the film has to overcome a reported budget gap of $30 million first. [RedHourBen and Deadline]

-- Swedish director Daniel Espinosa has drawn some attention for his crime thriller "Snabba Cash."
