It's a commonly known rule in horror movie lore that the killer always comes back for one last scare. In the case of the "Scream" series, the killer's come back for four scares now… but after a financially underwhelming debut for "Scream 4," has Ghostface put down the knife once and for all?

Don't bet on it, says Harvey Weinstein. The Weinstein Company chief, who has executive produced every edition of the "Scream" franchise to date, is quite confident that the genre-defying series has more life in it beyond "Scream 4."

"I'm sure [director Wes Craven is] going to do a sequel, I'm sure he's going to do a sequel," Weinstein insisted when we spoke with him at the Cannes Film Festival last week, stressing that while "Scream 4" didn't perform fantastically in the United States, it's doing quite well overseas.

With all the hype and excitement surrounding "Scream 4," I'm actually surprised it didn't perform better at the box office last weekend. Wes Craven directing! Kevin Williamson writing! All of the original characters (those who survived) back in action! I'm not even a fan of the "Scream" franchise and I enjoyed it.

Anyway, before the numbers came in last weekend, the word on the street was that there were two more "Scream" movies on the way. Screenwriter Williamson had planned the fourth film as a kickoff to a new trilogy, of sorts. When I caught up with the cast and Craven at the film's press day recently, I asked them to give us a tease of what they had planned for two more films. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette didn't want to speculate at the time, citing the notion that if they commented it would spoil the fact that their characters survived. However, Mr. Craven was more than happy to offer a few words on what might happen in future installments.

Warning: some spoilers for the ending of "Scream 4" lie ahead!

Cowboys and AliensA new trailer for "Cowboys & Aliens" was released on "American Idol" last night and it sent Twitter all atwitter. While we're not sure the title implies a singular champion, we've got some celebrity predictions for which side comes out on top.

"Game of Thrones" premieres Sunday and we keep forgetting that it's not a movie. But there's something about it that makes us love it. We're guessing it's the brooding and the violence (Just like in the movies!). We've got some early reviews fresh off the Twitter.com Internet Website. Meanwhile, "Scream 4" lands in theaters and it's Emma Watson's 21st birthday today. See what Voldemort had to say!

I'm @TravisHelwig and this is Twitter-Wood for April 15th, 2011.

Scream 4And so our week with Wes Craven comes to a close. We've been fortunate enough to have the "Scream 4" director as our guest editor this week covering topics including his latest horror film's origin story, the casting process, what goes into making a scary movie trailer and the evolution of horror over the past decade.

When "Scream 4" arrives in theaters next week, we'll return to Woodsboro to watch old friends Sidney, Dewey and Gale do their best to stop Ghostface's latest killing spree. But what happens then? If we walk away from "Scream 4" still itching for more from camp Craven, where should we turn next?

"Well, I guess they have to wait for 'Scream 5,'" Wes told me with a laugh when asked about the next step for "Scream 4" fans left wanting more. That's right — the horror is only just beginning.

Scream 4If you're just tuning in, "Scream 4" director Wes Craven has been joining us all week long as the special guest editor of MTV Movies Blog. He's supplied us with insight into the origin of his latest "Scream" movie, what he looked for in the casting process and his thoughts on the rules of a scary movie trailer.

But that's all current stuff. Today, we're looking back. A lot of time has passed since "Scream 3" arrived in theaters in 2000, with eleven years worth of horror films standing between then and now, the eve of the fourth "Scream" film's release. It's an undeniably new landscape dominated by sub-genres from found footage and torture porn, to frequently cited problems such as sequelitis and reboots.

"You named a lot of them," Wes told me when I listed off these prevalent themes and storytelling avenues that have seemingly defined the past decade of mainstream horror. And from where he's sitting, all of these things added fuel to the fire burning brightly within "Scream 4."

"Scream 4" director Wes Craven is joining us here on MTV Movies Blog all week long as our guest editor, sharing insight into the origins of his latest horror flick and what went into the casting process.

As Jamie Kennedy's dearly departed Randy Meeks was so fond of reminding us, there are certain rules you need to follow in order to survive a scary movie. Likewise, the rules of scary movies have become an integral plot point to the "Scream" films. But one thing we're not entirely clear on is this: what are the rules of a scary movie trailer?

"It's tricky," Wes admitted when asked about what goes into making an effective scary movie trailer, adding that it's difficult to keep the viewer intrigued without spoiling too many surprises.

Scream 4As we told you yesterday, "Scream 4" director Wes Craven is serving as the guest editor of MTV Movies Blog all week long, sharing insight into what went into creating the latest "Scream" movie and his feelings on how the horror genre as a whole has progressed over the years. In other words, if you like scary movies, this is the place to be.

Today, we're diving into one of the most essential ingredients for any movie, "Scream" or otherwise — the cast. While the first three outings of Craven's genre-defying slasher series relied quite heavily on three central figures — Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Officer Dewey Riley (David Arquette) — this latest round needed some new blood to spill as well.

To that end, Craven and his team recruited an eclectic mix of young up-and-comers like Emma Roberts and Nico Tortorella, as well as some familiar faces like Adam Brody and Anthony Anderson.

Wes CravenDo you like scary movies? If you do, you're in for a treat, because one of the horror genre's most widely worshipped filmmakers will be joining us right here on MTV Movies Blog all week long.

"Scream 4" director Wes Craven is serving as the guest editor of Movies Blog throughout the week, bringing you the ins and outs of what went into making the fourth entry in his blood-soaked slasher franchise, commentary on the progression of the horror genre in recent years and much, much more.

Today, we're talking about the origins of "Scream 4." In a day and age where sequels, reboots and overhauls are par for the course, it's not necessarily surprising to see that "Scream" is back for more — after all, the killer always comes back from the dead for one last scare, doesn't he? — but the combined forces of Craven, original "Scream" writer Kevin Williamson and stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Coutrney Cox make this continuation a force to be reckoned with.

ScreamThe idea of returning to Woodsboro for one more "Scream" movie didn't sit right with me right away, but after hearing more about the plot and watching the film's official trailer, I'm on board. The rules of horror have changed, for better or worse, in the decade since "Scream 3," and perhaps we need to remember why we like scary movies in the first place.

But then came the rumors of reshoots. If there's one thing scarier than Ghostface himself, it's reshoots. Sometimes they're accomplished to enhance the picture, oftentimes its a telltale sign of trouble. When it comes to "Scream 4," already a production that some fans were skeptical about, it was hard to know which way things would land.

Except that these aren't reshoots. Not according to Wes Craven, at least, who explains to Entertainment Weekly that he's going back into production not to recapture certain shots, but to create entirely new ones.

Scream 4If you're not yet excited for "Scream 4," you should probably started getting pumped right about now. Dimension Films has released a new trailer for the upcoming horror satire, and it definitely gives a better feel for what we can expect than the previous teaser did.

The best parts of the trailer come when it pokes fun at all the horror tropes of the past 10 years. For instance, when Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) won't tell his wife, hard-nosed reporter Gale Weathers-Riley (Courtney Cox), what's going on, she responds that his "classified information" is already all over the Internet. Ghostface challenges newcomer Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) to name a remake of a classic horror film, and before he can finish his question she starts spouting out a dozen films. Oh, and apparently virgins can die now. Hit the jump to watch the trailer! Read More...
