In the clip below, we see the natural evolution of a young boy's pursuit of video game high scores to a career man's pursuit of frequent flyer high scores. "Up in the Air," directed by Jason Reitman, stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a hard-traveling corporate soldier who has a singular goal. In the clip below, he shares that dream -- of earning 10 million frequent flyer miles -- with fellow traveler Natalie, played by "Twilight actress Anna Kendrick. Natalie wisely characterizes the pursuit as a grown man's pissing contest, which is exactly what it is when you get right down to it.
As children of the '80s, we can honestly say one of the more interesting projects out there is MTV's forthcoming reboot of "Teen Wolf," the cheeseball films perhaps best known for showcasing a hairy Michael J. Fox shooting hoops in werewolf garb. This time, though, MTV is planning to strip away most of the comedy, instead labeling the show as a dramatic thriller.
Whoever is cast in the reborn franchise may want to take note of our interview today with Jason Bateman, the "Up in the Air" star who walked the carpet at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival. See, before his recent run of blockbuster films and his now-legendary series "Arrested Development," Bateman was a young struggling actor who snagged the lead role in "Teen Wolf Too," the 1987 sequel to the original. So what did advice did Bateman have to offer the next generation? "Try to pitch the writers to be a fan of electrolysis," he joked. Watch the video below for more.
FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: When we caught up with rising young star Anna Kendrick at the Toronto Film Festival, where she's promoting her co-starring role with George Clooney in "Up in the Air," we had one big question in mind...has she seen the brand new trailer for "New Moon"?
"I did," she exclaimed, "[but] it was a very, very small video and it was very blurry, so I'm looking forward to seeing it in a big theater." Well, that makes two of us, Anna, but if you want to see the expanded trailer with even more never-before-seen footage, you'll have to tune into the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT where we're airing the exclusive full-length trailer for "New Moon" for the first time. Check out Anna's thoughts below, including her comparison between heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Clooney.
Far closer in spirit and structure to his debut flick, "Thank You for Smoking," than "Juno," Jason Reitman's latest effort clearly is a step up in his increasingly exciting film career. Undeniably moving and heartfelt, "Up in the Air" is one of the year's best and a surefire awards contender for George Clooney, Reitman, and perhaps Vera Farmiga.
The film has been scorching through Toronto, leaving virtually everyone who's seen it gushing about it as the best thing since Billy Wilder helmed "The Apartment." Okay, maybe not THAT much gushing but close. Read more...
Tonight, the Toronto International Film Festival kicks off with the world premiere screening of "Creation," directed by Jon Amiel. The movie stars real-life husband and wife Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as Charles Darwin and Emma Darwin, respectively. It is an adaptation of the Darwin bio "Annie's Box" by Randal Keynes.
Of course, "Creation" just kicks things off. There's a whole weekend of indie madness to immerse yourself in. Sure, those of us who aren't fortunate enough to be in Toronto are going to have to wait. But there are some good flicks coming out of the fest, stuff that you're sure to see hit theaters in some form in the coming months. Here are a few of the highlights we have to look forward to... -- The poster for Michael Jackson's "This Is It" premiered at Yahoo! Movies. It's a cool image: Jackson's silhouette, arms thrown outward and upward, with a collage of performance stills scattered around inside the human form. For those who haven't been keeping track, "This Is It" is a documentary featuring the recently departed pop star's final performance footage. (Yahoo! Movies)
-- Jerry Bruckheimer is preparing to blow up the small screen with loud noises, lots of gunplay and spectacular explosions. The mega-producer is bringing his talents to NBC for an untitled TV series which will tell "the stories of a team charged with making sure fugitive criminals don't evade justice." The last time Bruckheimer teamed with NBC was for the short-lived "E-Ring" in 2005. (The Hollywood Reporter) Read more...
Jason Reitman's "Juno" follow-up, "Up in the Air," will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month. As a fan of the Oscar-winning pregnant teen dramedy and of the Reitman family in general, I'm definitely looking forward to checking it out. Star George Clooney is another selling point for what sounds an awful lot like an offbeat love story.
Clooney stars as Ryan Bingham, a dreaded corporate axeman who very much enjoys his jetsetting, constantly-on-the-move lifestyle. Just shy of earning his long-awaited 10 millionth frequent flyer mile, Bingham's single lifestyle is disrupted after he meets a fellow frequent flyer (Anna Kendrick) whom he clicks with. At least I think that's what it's about. It doesn't really matter; Clooney playing a Reitman-penned character is all that's necessary to sell me on this one. Read more...
FROM MTV.COM:
A St. Louis beauty-salon owner found discarded copies of two scripts for films featuring Robert Pattinson, but instead of selling them to the highest bidder, she returned the pages to the studio. Now she'll be attending both premieres.
Casey Ray discovered the scripts for the Pattinson-starring "New Moon," the sequel to last year's vampire blockbuster "Twilight," and the upcoming romantic drama "Remember Me" in a trash can on the street, according to The Associated Press.
Ray was apparently waiting for her fiancé when she saw the scripts in the trash outside a St. Louis hotel, where actors appearing in the new George Clooney film, "Up in the Air," were staying.
