"Up in the Air" star Vera Farmiga was nominated for an Oscar last night in the Best Supporting Actress category. Mo'Nique had that one pretty much locked up of course, but Farmiga was still out on the red carpet last night to celebrate both her own work and that of her peers.

One of her upcoming projects is "Source Code," a sci-fi flick from "Moon" director Duncan Jones (the most criminally underrated film of 2009). And given how excellent "Moon" was, MTV's Josh Horowitz had to ask Farmiga if we can expect more of the same in his sophomore effort.

"I can't tell you much," she said after confirming that she starts shooting in April. Read More...

A few days ago, "Up in the Air" author Walter Kirn was convinced he'd been passed over for an invitation to the Academy Awards. It appears there is a happy ending to the story after all, though, as Paramount eventually came through, according to his tweets last night.

Today, meanwhile, Tiger Woods took the spotlight to apologize for his own oversights and mistakes. Most of Twitter-Wood had opinions to express, but I handpicked Gilbert Gottfried to speak for the crowd. Check out those retweets after the jump, along with an Ashton Kutcher tattoo, Tim Curry and Christopher Mintz-Plasse's reaction to "Valentine's Day." It's in Twitter-Wood for February 19, 2010. Nothing stirs up emotions, name-dropping and unbridled snark in Hollywood quite like the Academy Awards nominations, and each of these behaviors was alive and well this morning as the official Oscar contenders for 2010 went public.

In the first few hours after the nominees were announced Twitter-Wood saw all of these reactions, and I've retweeted a collection below filled with Anna Kendrick's shock after seeing her Best Supporting Actress nomination for "Up in the Air," Lee Unkrich's wishes to the "Up" crew, Samm Levine's assessment of the eight nominations received by "Inglourious Basterds" and more. Check 'em out below in this Twitter-Wood Special Edition. Read More...

FROM MTV.COM: Days after winning its seventh-straight weekend at the box office, "Avatar" nabbed nine nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, tying "The Hurt Locker" for most Oscar nods in 2010. "Inglourious Basterds" garnered eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, while "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and "Up in the Air" collected six and "Up" secured five.

For the first time since 1943, when "Casablanca" triumphed, the Oscars have selected 10 nominees in the Best Picture category, rather than the usual five. Despite the increased number, there were few surprises. Joining Cameron's big blue-alien epic are "The Hurt Locker," "Inglourious Basterds," "Up in the Air," "Precious, "District 9," "An Education," "A Serious Man," "Up" and "The Blind Side."

George Clooney doesn't do interviews anymore. Those of us on the junket/red carpet beat have come to accept this in recent months. Sure, he'll do a press conference here and there. And yeah he'll walk a red carpet and kinda sorta stop and say hi but he rarely will stop and chat. In Toronto at "Up in the Air" premiere he slowed his gait JUST enough for every reporter to think they had a moment with him--they didn't.

Clooney even confirmed his new no interview stance in a recent interview. So even though I knew he was walking the National Board of Review red carpet the other night here in NYC I didn't think there was a chance in hell I'd get time with him. Stupid Josh. This is what happens when the most charming man on the planet decides to blindside you and actually chat. Topics covered: "Sunset Beat," beards, and "Jersey Shore."

Every year, it seems, awards season gives us some sort of feel-good Cinderella story. We all remember the “Slumdog” kids, or Keisha Castle-Hughes… hell, heartwarming awards season tales go all the way back to folks like Harold Russell in 1946’s “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Well, the tradition is continuing this year with one of the greatest real-life success stories we’ve heard in a awhile, and it involves Jason Reitman, a tape recorder and an unemployed musician who was in the right place at the right time.

“At that point I was telling myself ‘This is all I can do’,” St. Louis native Kevin Renick remembers of the fateful day he attended a lecture hosted by the “Juno” director in February 2008 and, out of sheer desperation, snuck him a cassette tape of a demo he had recorded. “I thought ‘This is not going to work. He’s probably going to throw the thing in the trash.’ But I thought I’d try it anyway.” Read More...

Each year, the Director's Guild of America selects one of its own to receive an award for his or her Outstanding Directorial Achievement. Like the Golden Globes, the five nominated individuals often serve as a barometer for what to expect in the top categories at the Academy Awards. And while the expanded playing field in the Best Picture category -- up from five nominations to 10 -- means that we're bound to see a few wildcards, the latest round of nominations for the year still serves as a pretty good indicator of who might be in the running for the biggest Oscars of the year.

Well the DGA's nominations for this year's Outstanding Directorial Achievement category were announced today and there's not a surprise among them. James Cameron is in there of course, for "Avatar," as is Lee Daniels for "Precious." Also up for the award are Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds"), Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") and Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air"). Like I said, no surprises. Read More...

DESC1. "Avatar" ($75 million)
2. "Sherlock Holmes" ($65.4 million)
3. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" ($50.2 million)
4. "It's Complicated" ($22.1 million)
5. "Up in the Air" ($11.8 million)

This holiday weekend, "Sherlock Holmes" fell victim to one of the classic blunders, and no, it wasn't: "Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line." Instead, Warner Bros. and the decision makers behind the sleuth supreme's onscreen rebirth made the mistake of going up against James Cameron's "Avatar," the 3D action epic that won first place for its second week in a row. 1. "Sherlock Holmes" ($24.9 million)
2. "Avatar" ($23.5 million)
3. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" ($14.5 million)
4. "It's Complicated" ($7.1 million)
5. "Up in the Air" ($3.6 million)

This weekend's battle of the blockbusters opened on Christmas Day yesterday in a close contest. Director Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" just barely edged "Avatar" out of the top spot, with $24.9 million in ticket sales to the sci-fi epic's $23.5 million. Estimates pin both with a $70 million weekend, but the James Cameron flick has been turning in strong daily numbers, so a shortfall isn't out of the question. Read More...
