In Honor Of 'Haywire': Ten Female Badasses Tougher Than Their Male Co-Stars

With the release of "Haywire" and "Underworld: Awakening" this weekend, the box office is in for a heaping helping of badass women. Both Gina Carano and Kate Beckinsale play the role of strong, female protagonist that make the men around them look like little boys. If they get stabbed or shot at, they barely even flinch. Punch them, and they'll punch you right back. These women are tough as nails, but you shouldn't think of them as woman. That would be a mistake.

Kate Beckinsale Rejoins 'Underworld' For Fourth Installment

Kate BeckinsaleVampires and Lycans, it's time to crawl back into your coffins and dodge those silver bullets: the original Death Dealer is back in action.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, actress Kate Beckinsale has agreed to return to the role of Selene for the fourth installment of Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment's "Underworld" film franchise. Shooting begins in March 2011 in Vancouver based on a script originally written by John Hlavin and revised by J. Michael Straczynski.

Beckinsale took a breather from the "Underworld" franchise by sitting out of "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" in 2009. A prequel to the first two "Underworld" films, "Rise of the Lycans" had a built-in reason to keep Beckinsale on the sidelines. In her place, actress Rhona Mitra occupied the leading lady role. For years, people have enjoyed the adventures of the G.I. Joe team, a counter-terrorist unit made up of people from all military branches. In the comics, the Joes have repeatedly encountered the alien warriors known as the Transformers, leading to some fun crossover stories.

Now that G.I. Joe has returned -- as a multi-national organization, of course -- to the spotlight with the new film "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and brand new comics from IDW, I got to wondering what other fun crossovers could occur with this new team. 'Gears Of War' Movie To Be Directed By Len Wiseman -- Is That A Good Thing?

I'll leave it to my esteemed colleagues at MTV's Multiplayer blog to weigh in the potential for "Gears of War" as a movie property. But I certainly can weigh in on Len "I'm more than Kate Beckinsale's husband" Wiseman. If you'd asked me a year ago where Mr. Wiseman ranked in the pantheon of genre filmmakers I'd have put him about on par with Steven Sommers (you know, the guy that made a movie starring Hugh Jackman as a monster hunter interminable). Before last summer Wiseman was the guy who couldn't make me interested in a vampire/werewolf movie starring the aforementioned Beckinsale in skin-tight leather.

BUT then came "Live Free or Die Hard," an actual honest to goodness breath of fresh wacked-out action air. Sure it was silly. Sure it wasn't exactly memorable. But it was entertaining as hell. Len Wiseman, maybe you've got something after all. And now it's on to "Gears of War" for Len. The little I know of the game makes it sound like a cool and attractive template for a kick-ass action flick.

But you guys probably know that stuff better than me. What do you think? Is Len Wiseman the right guy for "Gears of War" or do we have another "Doom" on our hands? What NEEDS to be included in the flick to honor the game? Sound off.
