TransformersOf all the surprises that "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" has in store for moviegoers, there's perhaps no greater surprise than this: the blockbuster-to-be has attracted the likes of Oscar-winner Frances McDormand.

Yes, the woman whose diverse and staggeringly impressive resume which includes "Almost Famous," "Mississippi Burning," "Blood Simple" and, of course, "Fargo," will be appearing alongside Autobots, Decepticons and super-models in the third installment of Michael Bay's action-packed "Transformers" franchise. To say it's a bit of a departure (though, to be fair, the 54-year-old was in 2005's "Aeon Flux") is a bit of an understatement, but McDormand is hardly the first respected actor to appear in a popcorn flick.

As we countdown to the latest "Transformers" which features none other than Mrs. Joel Coen herself, we look back at five other top-tier actors and their surprising transitions to mainstream movies.

When it was announced that Megan Fox wouldn't be returning for the third installment of the "Transformers" franchise, many wondered who would be appealing enough to keep the predominantly young male fan base drooling.

Enter Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the knockout Victoria's Secret model, who is not only stepping off the runway and onto the big screen for her acting debut, but is taking over as the female lead in the billion-dollar franchise, for "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." While we still don't know how her character Carly will stack up against Fox's Mikaela, Rosie has already joined the ranks of models who have made the transition to film.

As we anticipate the 24-year-old beauty's breakout role, we look back at five memorable model's performances on celluloid (hey, it's one of the few times we can actually use "model" and "celluloid" in the same sentence), the good, the bad, and the (coyote) ugly.

TransformersWhen it comes to "Transformers," there usually is more than meets the eye. But in this case, what you see is what you get: The title of the third installment in Michael Bay's robot franchise is "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon" (apparently "Transformers: The One Without Megan Fox" is a no-go).

TFW first broke the news when it noticed that a trio of "Transformers" novels are currently available for pre-order on Amazon. The books, which will be released May 17, 2011, bear the titles: "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon - Secret of the Autobots," "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon – Autobots Betrayed!," and "Transformers: The Dark of the Moon: Invasion of the Decepticons." Subsequent sleuthing on the website's part found that Paramount/DreamWorks has already registered the domain TransformersTheDarkOfTheMoonMovie.com, and Collider says it has confirmed the title with sources close to the production. MTV News has reach out to Paramount for comment, and we'll bring you any update when we have it. Read More...

"Transformers 3" won't be in theaters until next summer, but it's shooting now so information has been coming out in drips and drabs. The latest comes from fromhollywoodwithluv.blogspot.com (via TFW2005), specifically an interview they did with Alan Tudyk. The casting was revealed in May but nothing was said about the "Firefly" actor's role in the film.

Well wonder no more. Here's what Tudyk had to say about his character: "I’m a fellow agent of [Agent Simmon's], that is sort of his assistant and weapons expert, computer hacker, cyber sleuth." For those who might not remember, Agent Simmons is the role filled by John Turturro. Tudyk has his work cut out for him, playing opposite that kind of lunacy. It's a fun pairing though, no question.

Shooting for "Transformers 3" is well underway in Chicago right now. The movie isn't out until next July, but it takes awhile to digitally create those massive robot aliens and stick them into the movie.

You know how it is with director Michael Bay: wherever he goes, a warzone soon follows. Such is the case with this footage from the Chicago shoot, which you can find after the jump. I have no idea what's going on in this scene, but I'd wager it has something to do with Decepticons tearing ass across the city. When will those puny humans learn that their tiny bullets have no effect on Transformers. It sure isn't going to be this movie, as the set footage illustrates.

The movies-loving world was stunned a few months when "Transformers" star Megan Fox was suddenly replaced by Victoria's Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. What didn't accompany the news was information about which role the newcomer would be taking on, leading many to speculate that she'd simply be taking over Fox's Mikaela Banes character. Now it seems that that may not be the case however.

"Transformers" fan site TFW2005.com has a set visit report up from Nelson, who serves as the site admin at Shoot For the Edit, Michael Bay's website. In the report he identifies Huntington-Whiteley's character as Carly, with no further explanation. As JoBlo points out, Carly was also the name of the character who eventually becomes Sam Witwicky's (Shia LaBeouf) wife on the animated series. We already know from previous interviews that bringing back the franchise's "core mythology" is very important to Bay and his team. Could this be the first sign of that plan in action?

"Transformers 3" shooting has been happening for a couple weeks now. Just yesterday a ton of photos surfaced online showing the streets of Chicago as an urban war zone. Even with star Megan Fox replaced by newcomer Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, it's clear that director Michael Bay is looking to deliver an explosive spectacle, as per usual.

With the shoot have turned towards what must be a military engagement, frequent Twitter-user Tyrese Gibson is of course on set to do his scenes. And being Tyrese, he's been sharing the love with his followers, our daily Twitter-Wood feed included. Today's Daily TwitPic brings your first look at the actor in full costume, complete with a large, dangerous-looking machine gun. Hit the jump to see it for yourself. Read More...

Emotions swung both ways in Twitter-Wood over the last 24 hours. Spain stirred up reactions with their win at the World Cup, and a few tweeters in the feed were even there to capture the moment in pictures. Check those out, and you can find out who was for Spain all along, as well as who was rooting for a psychic octopus.

Moods dipped a bit this morning, however, as news of underground comics icon and "America Splendor" creator Harvey Pekar's death hit the news. Rob Zombie, Patton Oswalt, and Brian Lynch all shared their thoughts on him, which you can find after the jump. There you'll also see what Tyrese Gibson is going to look like in "Transformers 3" and what Sofia Vergara plans on wearing for the next 2 weeks.

I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for July 12, 2010. Read More...

Michael BayLast summer's "Transformers" sequel may have boasted the subtitle "Revenge of the Fallen," but it's the third installment in the robot-smashing franchise that could be borrowing the implications of that subtitle. Even Shia LaBeouf has owned up to the failings of "Transformers 2," and in an interview with USA Today, director Michael Bay himself followed suit — but he believes that "Transformers 3" will be better.

There's a new villain in the form of Shockwave, a longtime "Transformers" character who lords over Cybertron while the Autobots and Decepticons are smashing each other to pieces on Earth. The film will deal with the space race between the USA and the U.S.S.R. But most importantly, "Transformers 3" will put a cap on Bay's trilogy, as the director explained: "[The franchise] could be rebooted again, but I think it has a really killer ending."

In other words, there's a very real possibility that this is Bay's swan song when it comes to the "Transformers" series. Read More...
