Late yesterday, Disney sent out a release linking to a video message from "Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich. There is apparently much reason to celebrate around the Pixar/Disney Animation studios these days, as the 3-D theatrical re-launch of "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2" in a double feature has been doing very well. So well in fact that the Mouse House has decided to extend the run, which was originally supposed to last for a brief two-week window.

This is great news. The first two "Toy Story" flicks are a lot of fun and all reports indicate that the 3-D upgrades are first rate. If you haven't seen them before, this is the best option for seeing them that's come along in quite some time. And if you have seen them... this is still the best way to watch them. Unkrich also had some news to share on the "Toy Story 3" front, the trailer for which can be seen running in front of the double-feature. Read more...

1. "Couples Retreat" ($35.3 million)
2. "Zombieland" ($15 million)
3. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" ($12 million)
4. "Toy Story" & "Toy Story 2" (3-D Double Feature) ($7.7 million)
5. "Paranormal Activity" ($7 million)

Taking vacation time is always a good thing for everybody, but it's particularly beneficial for Universal this weekend as "Couples Retreat" booked a flight to the number one spot at the box office. The film managed $35.3 million over the course of the weekend with a per screen average of $11 thousand, which is hardly a laughable result despite the movie's comedic tone. Read more...

1. "Couples Retreat" ($12.3 million)
2. "Zombieland" ($4.75 million)
3. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" ($3.1 million)
4. "Toy Story" & "Toy Story 2" (3-D Double Feature) ($2.54 million)
5. "Paranormal Activity" ($2 million)

The cheese stands alone as the Vince Vaughn-starring "Couples Retreat," the weekend's only new wide release, debuted on Friday in an expected first place finish at the box office. "Couples Retreat" marks the directorial debut of Peter Billingsley, who is most famous for his childhood portrayal of Ralphie in the classic "A Christmas Story" — apparently, Billingsley didn't shoot his eye out, because his directorial vision resulted in an $11.5 million Friday opening according to the numbers from Deadline Hollywood Daily. 1. "Zombieland" ($25 million)
2. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" ($16.7 million)
3. "Toy Story" & "Toy Story 2" (3-D Double Feature) ($12.5 million)
4. "The Invention of Lying" ($7.35 million)
5. "Surrogates" ($7.34 million)

Based on yesterday's projections, the remainder of the box office weekend played out as many suspected it would. Unsurprisingly, the Woody Harrelson-starring "Zombieland" took the first place prize with $25 million, surpassing its $23.6 million budget in its first weekend in theaters. The creature-filled dark comedy, which also stars notable up-and-comers Jesse Eisenberg ("Adventureland"), Emma Stone ("Superbad") and Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine"), marks the sixth time a Sony film has opened in the number one spot this year. 1. "Zombieland" ($9.4 million)
2. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" ($3.7 million)
3. "Toy Story" & "Toy Story 2" (3-D Double Feature) ($3.2 million)
4. "The Invention of Lying" ($2.5 million)
5. "Surrogates" ($2.2 million)

One might wonder why Sony Pictures is so happy in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, but the movie studio has plenty of reasons to smile as the Woody Harrelson-starring "Zombieland" nabbed the top spot at the box office on its opening day. The film earned $9.4 million going into Saturday, and Deadline Hollywood Daily's Nikki Finke is projecting a $25 million weekend total for the film. The movie was produced for an estimated $23.6 million, so "Zombieland" should have no trouble clawing its way towards the profit margin by Sunday's end. Read more...

Please excuse the delay in running this week's Box Office Poll. I experienced some technical difficulties when working from home yesterday, so I put this post off for today. What a week we're in for movies. I don't know about y'all, but every wide release that opens is on my list as well as a fair few of the limited releases. So let's get to it.

Tough to say what the big one for the week is going to be. I think the top contender -- though not necessarily by a wide margin -- is "Zombieland," a comedy-horror flick starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. As a zombie apocalypse sweeps across the world, the foursome set out on a cross-country trip to... well I'm not entirely sure. They kill lots of zombies though. Read more...

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there have never been a group of moviemakers better at appealing to multiple generations than the dudes over at Disney. During the last decade-and-a-half, they’ve received a major assist from Pixar and this weekend the powerhouse movie entities join forces again to bring the first two “Toy Story” films back in 3-D. Recently, we caught up with Tim Allen and he weighed in on whether Buzz Lightyear’s return to cinemas is motivated by money, nostalgia, the opportunity for a new audience – or all of the above.

“Disney loves these projects, and those of us involved in [the ‘Toy Story’ franchise] think it’s a good idea to see these in theaters again,” explained Allen, who voices Buzz. “That’s what it’s about, really. It’s not like Disney needs the coin. That’s not what this is about, people! This is about love - in the shape of greenbacks.” Read more...

Disney/Pixar tattoos lead a full menu from the Twitter-Wood feed today. If you want to see some dedicated "Toy Story" and "Up" fandom, you need look no further than director Lee Unkrich's tweets, which nudged out Ice-T's posterity shot with "Crank: High Voltage" star Jason Statham for Twitter Pic of the Day.

Photos popped up all over the feed, in fact, with John Stamos making an astute observation about one of his "E.R." costars and Paris Hilton enforcing fashion upon her dog. Check it out below, along with chatter between McLovin and his "Kick-Ass" co-star Chloe Moretz. I'm @brianwarmoth, and it's all in the Twitter-Wood report for September 2, 2009. Read more...

Ah, "Toy Story." You're the best. Err... second-best. I actually prefer your younger brother, "Toy Story 2." But you were great first. And the two of you make for an entertaining pair.

As you've probably heard by now (if you're a fan that is), Pixar's revolutionary first feature and its sequel are getting a 3-D makeover this fall. The double-feature will hit theaters on October 2, and will stick around for two weeks. I know it's a small window, but that should motivate fans to actually buy tickets rather than putting off a trip to the movies.

Whatever your plan is, here's the latest trailer for the upcoming paired 3-D release. Cute. I hope I'll be able to set aside some time to check this out in October. How about you?

'Monsters, Inc.'They did it with “Toy Story” twice. They’re doing it with “Cars” next. They’ve been rumored to want to do it with “The Incredibles” for years. Pixar is officially in the sequel business these days, with further installments of some of their most popular franchises in the works.

So how come we never hear about “Monsters, Inc. 2”?

“We’ve thought about it,” “Monsters, Inc.” director Pete Docter told MTV News about the possibility for a sequel. “We’ve got a couple ideas.”

In the moment, those ideas are being filtered into a “Monsters, Inc” roller-coaster at the Walt Disney Resorts, which should open in a couple of years. Read more...
