Is it just us or did Tom Cruise come across as massively sane, funny, and um almost cool tonight? Maybe it was the moment when we saw Tom chatting up "Tropic Thunder" buddy Ben Stiller. Or maybe it was when Katie Holmes sweetly wished him "good luck" before he made his way to the big stage. One of our favorite moments surely came when we saw Tom backstage with Sarah Jessica Parker. She practically looked like she was meeting royalty.

Then there was the big show where Tom won us over by repeatedly referring to MTV Generation Award winner Adam Sandler as "the Sandman." Tom Cruise has comic timing? You've come a long way from your couch jumping, Tom. Welcome back. (See pics of Cruise, Holmes and Sarah Jessica Parker after the jump!) Read more...

Robert Downey Jr in 'Tropic Thunder'Much to Ben Stiller's chagrin, the cat is now officially out of the bag about Tom Cruise's cameo in "Tropic Thunder" (check out our new Ben Stiller interview here). This morning, the New York Times reported at length about Cruise's performance in Stiller's upcoming big summer comedy. So the surprise is gone. Oh, well. But I am here to tell you that it will do nothing to detract from your enjoyment of "Tropic Thunder" when it opens August 15. And it all comes down to one man. No, not Cruise. Robert Downey Jr.

I've seen "Tropic Thunder" and as I've been telling anyone who will listen since, Robert Downey Jr.'s performance is absolutely one of the funniest I have seen in years. Read more...

Ladies and gentlemen, the next huge sci-fi franchise has a director. During an interview with "The Kingdom" director Peter Berg, he confirmed the rumor that "Dune" is coming and that he's the one that will helm it. Calling the plans for him to direct "a done deal," Berg told me that "if it weren't for the writer's strike, we'd be in it right now."

Berg says that while there's no script yet, they have a list of writers they plan to go out to once the strike settles. The helmer called himself "a huge fan of the book" and when asked about the scale of the film, he simply replied, "big big big."

As any fan of the Frank Herbert classic knows, "Dune" received the big screen treatment once before in a divisive David Lynch film. Berg said that while he's "a big fan of Lynch," he believes "that interpretation has left the door wide open for a remake." Read more...

Kenneth Branagh in 'Valkyrie'Here at the MTV Movie's Blog we've had a lot of fun in recent months with silly "What Ifs:" What if Brian De Palma directed "Spider Man"? What if David Cronenberg directed "Return of the Jedi"?

But talking about his new film "Valkyrie," Kenneth Branagh has a what if for us that's anything but silly: What if Hitler had been assassinated before the end of WWII?

"One feels the weight of that [question]," Branagh sighed. "The near misses, a last minute replacement of a bomb behind a wooden oak table leg that meant the course of the 20th century changed. Everything would have changed."

It's a question that Branagh admitted to spending a lot of time thinking about ever since he joined Tom Cruise on the Bryan Singer film, which follows Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and a tight band of resistance fighters as they attempt to kill Hitler, an assassination attempt known to history as the July 20 Plot.
