"Star Trek" star Chris Pine appears to have lined up another new job this week, in addition to nailing down a starring role in D.J Caruso's "The Art of Making Money." Pine has already reshaped William Shatner's role as James T. Kirk in the "Star Trek" franchise. Now it looks like he'll be stepping into the shoes previously worn by Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck as Tom Clancy's hard-nosed CIA analyst Jack Ryan. Pine's name floated out as the potential leading man to revamp Clancy's novels, such as "Patriot Games" and "The Sum of All Fears" for new releases, and Paramount has now confirmed his status as their pick.

"Tom Clancy created an unforgettable character with Jack Ryan," Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman said in a statement, according to Variety. "With Chris in this role, we've taken our first step in creating a re-boot that lives up to the successful lineage of the franchise." Read More...

Tom ClancyThat headline is a total inside joke. If you haven't played the Clancy video games, it probably doesn't make much sense. "Rainbow Six," "Ghost Recon" and "Splinter Cell" are all tremendously popular game franchises. They are also, as I argued earlier this week, a good reason why we can expect to see more Clancy on film in the near future.

The earlier post grew out of an Anne Thompson piece on Variety concerning the possibility of George Clooney stepping into Clancy's Jack Ryan character, a role previously occupied by Alec Baldwin ("The Hunt for Red October"), Harrison Ford ("Patriot Games," "Clear & Present Danger") and Ben Affleck ("The Sum of All Fears"), respectively. Now Thompson is reporting that Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are waiting on a script for something called "Untitled Tom Clancy Project," a title which I imagine will change at some point. George ClooneyListen up Tom Clancy fans. There are some Jack Ryan rumblings afoot and, since the fictional government worker has been kept on the benches since Ben Affleck revived him in 2002's "The Sum of All Fears," any news is good news. Variety blogger Anne Thompson spotted an offhand reference in a feature story on The Daily Beast to the character and George Clooney's possible interest in portraying him.

It's all very hazy and unconfirmed, but it's also something that's within the realm of possibility. Unlike the absurd rumor that Johnny Depp is being considered for the role of Michael Jackson in an unannounced biopic. Clooney, ever the smooth talker and stylish gent, couldn't be a better fit for a Jack Ryan revival on the silver screen. Read More...

Harrison FordIt's been a rough few years for longtime admirers of Harrison Ford. There was "Hollywood Homicide" and "K19: The Widowmaker" (which had the distinction of actually being worse than it's horrible title made it sound) and we're going to take the high road and not even get into "Firewall." But thankfully maybe the massive box office success of the four "Indiana Jones" this past summer will propel Mr. Ford to bigger and better things once again? Maybe?

Ford told us about the progress of a fifth Indy film the other day but before that one gets off the ground he told us he's set his sights on one of two projects: "I have a comedy that’s been developed by J.J. Abrams and a drama that I developed that talks about the pharmaceutical industry. We haven’t sorted out which is first yet." Read More...
