A new trailer for the 3D re-release of the box office monster hit, "Titanic," has hit the internet, but unfortunately for you, the trailer isn't going to look much different than one from 1997.

The 2D trailer for the 3D version has all the familiar sights: Leo, Kate, Celine Dion and other horrific tragedies. The re-release will open in theaters on April 6, 2012 in both 2D and 3D.

Hugh Hefner is Hollywood's greatest hero. When the aging Playboy Enterprises founder sees a good cause, he fights for it. That's exactly what happened when Hefner donated the crucial $900,000 needed in order to save the legendary Hollywood sign from becoming the site for new luxury homes and hotels. What a champ.

Truthfully, Hefner's heroism in this situation makes me wonder about some of the other great Hollywood catastrophes he would have been able to fix if given the chance — the fictional ones, of course! After the jump, here are some Hollywood endings that Hefner could have fixed. Read More...

As you may have heard, Oscar is planning a new technique this year to streamline the annual awards show: stars are encouraged to give the TV cameras their excitement and “You like me! You really like me!” A-list material, but are supposed to save their name-dropping thank-you’s for a behind-the-scenes webcam. Well, one of this year’s sure-to-be-big-winners is “Avatar,” and when producer Jon Landau stopped by our studio recently, he couldn’t help but get a laugh out of the fact that he was one of those bad apples who had created the need for a “thank-you cam.” (Editor's note: It should be mentioned that our Landau interview came before the change in procedure was announced.)

America, meet the man responsible for this year’s lack of thank-you’s. Read More...

There's a wacky bit of circularity in the end of the seven weeks "Avatar" spent at the top of the box office. The blockbuster juggernaut hit theaters in mid-December. Over the weeks that followed, it proceeded to shatter box office record after box office record, including the holy trinity of accomplishments -- top-grossing domestic, international and worldwide release of all-time -- held by James Cameron's previous effort, "Titanic."

The movie that ultimately unseated "Avatar" was "Dear John," a couples-friendly romantic drama that likely drew in a large number of women viewers this weekend while dudes were watching the Super Bowl. Which isn't to say that the two sexes can't find something to enjoy in both the Super Bowl and a modern-day love story; rather, I'm simply speaking to the broad demographics of each one's intended audience. Yesterday, after the 2010 Oscar nominations were announced, I took some time to look at James Cameron's track record with the Academy. Specifically the leap from his last major awards show appearance, when "Titanic" dominated the awards show with 11 Oscars won out of 14 nominations, to the coming one, at which last year's "Avatar" is looking at nine nominations. Some of you might prefer pictures to words however, and we've got you covered, in the form of this little package running through Cameron's development from "Titanic" to "Avatar." Enjoy!

In 1997, James Cameron made Hollywood history when his doomed love story "Titanic" scored a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations; the 1950 film "All About Eve" also nabbed that many. Eleven of the 14 nominations were winners for the famously sunken ship, tying with "Ben-Hur" (and later "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King") for the most Oscars won for a single film.

Now, Cameron is making history again. His "Avatar" has already shattered the all-time box office records held by "Titanic" for top-grossing worldwide release and top-grossing international release. Only one record remains standing -- all-time top-grossing domestic release -- and experts believe that could fall as soon as tomorrow, with "Avatar"'s $595 million total inching ever-closer to the $600.8 million held by "Titanic." We learned with this morning's 2010 Oscar nominations announcement that "Avatar" won't be breaking any Academy records, but let's consider for a moment Cameron's two box office smashes and how they measure up as Oscar contenders. It's one of the biggest questions in Hollywood. Can James Cameron's blockbuster sci-fi epic overtake the number one spot for highest-grossing film of all time, toppling the current champ, which is coincidentally another James Cameron film.

That's right, for thirteen years "Titanic" has remained king of the mountain, but with "Avatar" decimating the box office it seems only a matter of time until it dethrones Cameron's seafaring drama. We've all heard the experts speculating, but what does the man himself think? When we caught up with him at the Critics' Choice Awards, we asked him just that.

Back in early December, Cameron was fully cautious on the matter. "I don't think it's realistic to try and topple 'Titanic' off its perch," he told us then. But now the legendary filmmaker is singing a different song. Read More...

'Avatar'The question is no longer whether or not James Cameron's "Avatar" will earn back its production budget, as the film's recent ascension past the $1 billion worldwide threshold addressed that factor rather decisively. Instead, the question has become whether or not Cameron will top himself.

For more than a decade now, "Titanic" has comfortably held the distinction of being the highest grossing feature film of all time, both domestic and worldwide. But in case you haven't noticed, there's a not-so-little iceberg called Pandora, filled with Na'vi and other dangerous indigenous creatures, heading straight for Cameron's previously established "Titanic" — and judging by the box office numbers, it's entirely possible that "Avatar" could sink the boat. Even if James Cameron's "Avatar" somehow doesn't hit big with audiences this December, the filmmaker may soon have a couple more 3-D movies in theaters. Proven successes no less. Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, believes it will be ready to announce a 3-D re-release for "Titanic" within the next six months, and they have been doing tests on "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" for a similar reissue, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Imagine: Leonardo DiCaprio saying "I'm the king of the world" while seemingly sitting on your lap. Okay, so the first section of "Titanic" doesn't seem to lend themselves to 3-D in an exciting way, but you know it'll look cool when the boat starts going down. Scary too. Bodies that originally fell towards the camera on their way into the icy water will now likely be headed into the audience thanks to the added dimension. Read More...

-- Empire Online isn't technically a blog, but they do put together some reaully fun features. Features like "The 50 Greatest Movie Sequels," which pretty much speaks for itself. "Shrek 2" closes out the list, but the number one pick? Beating out "Godfather Part II" at number two, "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" at number six (BLASPHEMY!!!!) is James Cameron's "Aliens." Cameron gets two in the top 5, with "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" coming in at number three. (Empire Online)

-- Cinematical launched a new regular feature, Shelf Life, which takes a look back at movies that are more than five years old to judge whether the good ones hold up and whether the bad ones got an unfair condemnation. Their first pick? Sensibly (what with "Avatar" on the way), James Cameron's "Titanic." The verdict? You'll have to read the writeup to find out. (Cinematical) Read More...
