With numerous vampire-centric franchises currently existing in the film and television worlds—yes, we're looking at you "Twilight," "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries"—there's an understandable amount of in-fighting between fans of these different properties, every one of them arguing in favor of their brand of choice.
But with so much time spent on the struggle within the vampire community, perhaps fans are overlooking a greater threat—a threat that comes from outer space.
We're talking, of course, about aliens. They're not bug-eyed and green-skinned, but the aliens you'll see in "I Am Number Four," arriving in theaters today, are no less dangerous—and they're certainly no less sexy than some of your favorite bloodsucking vamps. Indeed, the arrival of "I Am Number Four" already had our friends at Hollywood Crush asking if Alex Pettyfer is the new Robert Pattinson, and now we're curious... could aliens become pop culture's new vampires?

Remember James Frey, author of "A Million Little Pieces"? Yeah, he's the guy Oprah ripped a new one for passing that off as a memoir when it was mostly fiction. Turns out, making stuff up is a good talent to have: "I Am Number Four," the best-selling sci-fi novel Frey subsequently co-wrote with Jobie Hughes, is bound for the big screen courtesy of "Disturbia" director DJ Caruso. And its interest-piquing new trailer just debuted on Yahoo.
The plot centers on nine infant aliens who are sent to Earth when their planet is destroyed, develop super powers and are hunted by the Mogadorians (the evil guys who trashed their home). Hmm ... sounds eerily similar to this little movie we once saw called "Superman 2." But, hey, we loved that flick, so we're not complaining. Read more...

By now I hope you've taken in the story of how I went from mild-manner entertainment journalist to Hollywood mover-and-shaker because of my role in "The Crazies." I'm kind of a big deal.
But we haven't yet shown you the entire exclusive clip from the film. The scene picks up about thirty minutes into the film, as a mysterious insanity-inducing, bloody murder-generating plague has descended on the population of Ogden Marsh, Iowa. Sheriff David Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) and his pregnant wife Judy (Radha Mitchell) are just trying to figure out what in the hell is going on when government soldiers in hazmat suits descend on the town and institute a military lockdown. Judy ends up being admitted into the quarantine as David fights like crazy to free her. He's unsuccessful and, well, hit play on the video to find out what happens next.
Directed Breck Eisner ("Sahara"), "The Crazies" opens this Friday, February 26.
I have fond memories of the original video game-to-film adaptation of "Hitman" for one reason and one reason only. That's where I met my good friend John Constantine, who submits some great lists and opinion pieces here on MTV Movies Blog each week. We bonded over a misguided film critic's assertion that the movie isn't for kids even though it is based on a game. I quickly pointed out that an M-rated game is not for kids either.
I digress. The point of the above anecdote is that "Hitman" wasn't a particularly great movie. Star Timothy Olyphant is a talented actor, and he did bear a striking resemblance to the game's Agent 47 -- admittedly not a difficult thing one the bald cap is in place -- but the fact remains that the adaptation fell considerably short of what it could have been. Maybe that's par for the course when it comes to game adaptations, but it also makes Fox's latest move all the more puzzling. Read more...

I love me some David Twohy. Dude definitely has some clunkers in his portfolio -- I'm looking at you, "Waterworld." I don't care though. He wrote and directed "Pitch Black," which also means that Vin Diesel's Richard B. Riddick character is Twohy's creation. He also wrote classics along the lines of "Warlock," "Critters 2: The Main Course" and a little-known movie called "The Fugitive."
Now Twohy has climbed back into the writer/director's chair after an extended post-"Chronicles of Riddick" break. "A Perfect Getway," starring Chris Hemsworth (aka Kenneth Branagh's Thor), Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant and Steve Zahn, follows a newlywed couple (Zahn and Jovovich) who are off on a hiking honeymoon in Hawaii. Somewhere along the trails they run into some shady hikers and... well... things get weird. Check out the new trailer to see for yourself.

In April, MTV News visited the set of the remake of George Romero's 1973 film "The Crazies." The original was an exercise in low-budget, high-camp horror: unmistakably fake blood, ridiculous overacting, laughable special effects. Yet the core story—the innocent residents of an Iowa town get infected with an insanity-inducing military bio-weapon that has them burning, shooting and otherwise viciously attacking one another—was undeniably frightening.
For the updated version, director Breck Eisner ("Sahara") and his cast - including Timothy Olyphant and Danielle Panabaker - have made it their #1 priority to stay true to the terrifying nucleus of the original while bringing in a bigger budget and far superior moviemaking technology in a quest to scare the crap out of audiences. Check out our report below.

Who isn’t on Twitter these days? Millions of accounts are already online. MTV Movies Blog is on there, Oprah’s signed up—even my mom keeps threatening to join. It’s no surprise, then, that the movie industry is getting in on the micro-blogging action.
Folks on the set of “The Crazies,” the remake of George Romero’s horror flick about a top-secret bio-weapon that unleashes a plague of murderous insanity on an unsuspecting small town, have been Tweeting since shooting began in March. When I headed down to the central Georgia set recently, it seemed that the magic that is Twitter was all anyone could talk about. Read more...

“It’s like being on PCP or meth!” the director Breck Eisner explains. “Ex-girlfriend crazy, most of ‘em!” says Timothy Olyphant. “It’s all dependent on whether your mommy and daddy were nice to you!” his co-star Radha Mitchell decides.
They’re talking about the insanity-inducing, homicide-provoking effects of a military-grade bio-weapon that accidentally infects the water supply of a small Iowa town in the remake of George Romero’s 1973 horror flick “The Crazies.” While they may have different descriptions of what it’s like to become a diseased, blood-thirsty killer, during my visit to the set they are all in agreement about one thing: they’re not zombies!
“The most challenging thing for us was how do we make these Crazies not look like zombies, yet have a signature look that is dynamic and aggressive and memorable,” Eisner (“Sahara”) tells me before filming gets underway at a high school in central Georgia’s Peach County. Read more...

I should probably confess this now: I’m terrified of horror movies. I think it has something to do with a traumatic basement viewing of “Nightmare on Elm Street” when I was in the first grade. So when my bosses at MTV News asked if I wanted to be in a horror movie, I thought they had to be joking. Then it occurred to me that perhaps the universe was issuing a challenge to an unsuspecting entertainment journalist: get over it dude! Read more...
