The new year is here, and with it a time for reflection on the past year and things we resolve to do better in the coming 365 days. The New York Times talked to some studio executives last week about whether Hollywood had learned its lessons from the flops in 2010 and was going to lead us into a great year for movies in 2011. Amy Pascal, Sony's co-chairwoman shared: "We think the future is about filmmakers with original voices. Original is good, and good is commercial."
Original voices maybe, but original film stories not so much. Despite the fact that some of this year's most-loved films were new ideas ("Black Swan," "Despicable Me" and "Inception"), the biggest moneymakers followed the too-familiar trend of sequels, reboots and remakes ("Toy Story 3," "Iron Man 2" and "Alice in Wonderland"). And while studio execs might be professing that change is in the air for 2011, looking at a list of next year's films shows a whole lot of the same.
Here's a breakdown: Of the 93 films hitting theaters next year, 29 are original; 28 are either adaptations or based on true events (but not twisted into thrillers like "Apollo 18" and "The Rite"); 34 are either reboots, remakes or sequels; and two are documentaries (hi there, "African Cats" and "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never"). After the jump we'll take a look at them and see if studios really have learned lessons from 2010's biggest flops. Read more...

Every year has its share of great movies (check out our top 10 films of the year here and vote for your fave here) and not-so-great movies... and 2010 was no exception. There were the sure-fire winners that totally failed with critics, like "The Tourist" and the reboot of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and there were the films that never had a chance, like "Case 39" and "Furry Vengeance"... as well as, apparently, anything with Katherine Heigl and/or Josh Duhamel.
It's kind of mean to kick these flicks while they're down, so we decided to go to an outside source for some hard data. In other words, we checked out RottenTomatoes to see which flicks were the 25 lowest rated of 2010. Then we made a convenient little poll out of the 25 films to see which one you decide is the worst. Hit the jump to vote in the poll, and let us know in the comments or on Twitter which films you thought were the bottom of the barrel in 2010 (and feel free to yell at me if you disagree)!

It's not the least bit shocking that awards-season front runners like "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Black Swan" cleaned up when the 68th annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning. But "The Tourist"? We love Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp as much as the next person, but apparently not nearly as much as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which doles out the Globes. Despite ice-cold reviews and a lukewarm box-office reception, "The Tourist" walked away from today's nominations with three nods, including one for Best Picture. And that was just one of the big surprises. Mark Wahlberg's boxing drama "The Fighter" weighed in with an impressive six noms, while Depp was nominated twice in the same category.
As usual, there were a fair amount of prominent snubs as well. Not a single nod for "True Grit"? Seriously? And are "The Tourist" and "Burlesque" and the rest of Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy race really more worthy of a nomination in that category than "Toy Story 3"? Check out our picks for the biggest snubs and surprises of this year's Golden Globes nominations. Read more...

Aside from the nickname "Jolie," former "Jersey Shore" starlet Angelina Pivarnick doesn't have a whole lot in common with her Oscar-winning nicknamesake.
Angelina Jolie is the butt-kicking star of such blockbusters as "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "Wanted" and "Salt," a crusading philanthropist battling poverty and other ills across the world, and one half of the genetically blessed super-couple Brangelina. Pivarnick is a sassy Staten Island-bred bartender, a known associate of people with names like the Situation, Snookie, JWow and DJ Pauly D., and a huge fan of GTL (that's the sacred trinity of Gym, Tan, Laundry for the "Jersey Shore" uninitiated).
Naturally, we had to wonder what Jolie's latest film, the mistaken-identity thriller "The Tourist," would have been like had Pivarnick starred opposite Johnny Depp instead of Jolie. So we re-cut the "Tourist" trailer with one rather massive change: We subbed in Pivarnick for Jolie. Read more...

A few weeks back, MTV's Josh Horowitz coaxed Dan Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton -- the very British stars of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" -- into employing their best American accents. The result was the viral sensation "American Talk," one of MTV News' most-viewed videos ever.
While at the Paris press junket for "The Tourist," Josh did something similar with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, engaging the stars in a humorous game of "Parisian Password." For the uninitiated, Password is a game where one player tries to guess a word or phrase based on one-word clues given by another player. Parisian Password is Password where only French terms are in play. You get it. And trust us, you don't need to parlez vous French to enjoy this.
What do you think of "Parisian Password"? Tell us in the comments!

His shirt was tattered in a fashion-statement kind of way, and his tan was very Jack Sparrow. My encounter with him seemed way too casual for it to be a real live interview with one of the most prominent actors of our era, Johnny Depp. Yet there I was, sitting across from the erstwhile Edward Scissorhands and Mad Hatter, chatting with him at the Paris press junket for his new movie, "The Tourist."
When I mentioned I was from Miami, Johnny told me that he used to live in Miramar, Florida -- a mere 20 miles from my home. And when he smiled, I caught a glimpse of Jack Sparrow's gold teeth. A moment later, the chatting ceased so we could begin the four-minute interview. Read more...

There I was at the climax of my trip to Paris as MTV's guest correspondent for "The Tourist" press junket... and as with the end of any good movie, I was eager to know what was about to happen. As I waited to interview Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany, I planted myself on a puffy couch in the hospitality suite of Le Meurice Hotel. I had dressed up for the occasion, wearing a chic white blazer, some shiny tights and a pair of funky round-toed gray suede wedges. Everyone there told me not to be nervous, which actually made me a little bit nervous. Journalists were taken in clusters to the interview rooms, and my group finally departed around 3 p.m.
When I walked into the room to interview Angelina, the first thing that struck me is that she's just as dazzling in person as she is on the big screen -- high definition video doesn't lie. I introduced myself and immediately said I was with MTV. It was a solid effort at gaining some credibility. "Of course you are because you look cool!" Angelina said while examining my outfit. Score! Perhaps you've heard that "21 Jump Street," a 1980s TV series about undercover cops who specialize in youth crime, is getting a big-screen adaptation courtesy of Jonah Hill, who co-wrote the script and will star opposite Channing Tatum. You may have also heard that Hill wants Johnny Depp -- whose portrayal of Officer Tom Hanson on the show helped launched him to superstardom -- for a cameo. Well, here's a bit of news that might not have made its way to your ears: Depp is totally game for it.
The man known for playing Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Captain Jack Sparrow told MTV News exactly that at the Paris press junket for "The Tourist." "I've said I'm into it, but no one's actually approached me," Depp said of a role in "21 Jump."
Meanwhile, Jonah Hill, who specifically scripted a part for Depp in the film, told MTV as recently as last month that he'd love to have the iconic actor in the "21 Jump Street" reboot. In fact, he even made an on-camera pitch to Depp, joking: "Just do it, dude. Don't be an a--hole." Read more...

I've seen a lot during my brief stay in Paris as MTV's Ultimate "Tourist" Guest Correspondent -- the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and a bunch of other stuff -- and I have to say that the Le Meurice Hotel must be the most spectacular hotel in the entire city. It's the epitome of European elegance... and thus the perfect locale to host "The Tourist" press junket, where I'd soon interview Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and Paul Bettany.
(Click on the photo below for a behind-the-scenes look at Gaby's "Tourist" experience so far, including her sightseeing adventures and the preparations for her celebrity interviews.)

I settled into a seat in the hospitality suite on the top floor to look over my questions for Johnny, Angelina and Paul, all while snacking on tiny sandwiches with the crusts cut off and taking in the view of the gorgeous cityscape. My nerves were tingling, but not in a bad way. I was excited, ready, fired up -- you get the picture. Read more...

Paris has been incredible so far -- and the best is yet to come. I arrived in style to the Westin Hotel and met the MTV Staff I would be working with to cover the press junket for the Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie movie, "The Tourist." It's nice to have an experienced group to guide me during this film journalism adventure. We didn't linger long at the hotel, however, and were soon on our way to the most popular and iconic sites Paris has to offer: the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower. Even though my fingers and toes were numb the entire day from the extreme cold, the famous Paris landmarks were breathtaking (click on the photo below for a look at my day).

The snow began falling harder as the day progressed, however, and I was glad when it came time to get down to business (and into a warmer environment) for a screening of "The Tourist." The television press invited to the junket -- including yours truly -- got our own screening of "The Tourist" in a private cinema. We even got some hors 'd'oeuvres to nibble on before the film began.
