As the weekend progresses, audiences continue to fall hard for "The Proposal," which stayed strong at #1 by bringing in $34.1 million, finally knocking "The Hangover" down from its two week reign at the top. After weeks of explosions and CG, people were clearly in the mood for a little love... and perhaps all the pre-release publicity that focused on the nude scene between "Proposal" stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds helped a little. 'The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3'by John Constantine

As a subway commuter myself, I have to admit that the idea of getting hijacked by criminals looking to ransom off New York City resident and torture Denzel Washington is pretty terrifying. Then again, if it was John Travolta doing the hijacking, it would probably be hilarious and make for an entertaining day.

This week’s remake of “The Tacking of Pelham 1 2 3” is more than entertainment, though. It is a reminder of public transportation’s, especially the subway’s, vital role in creating kickass cinematic drama and action. Here, for your pleasure, are my five most gripping subway scenes in film history. Read more...

'The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3'FROM MTV.COM: I have a problem with "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3." It's the premise: Four bad guys descend into the New York City subway system, hijack a train, hold the passengers hostage and demand that the city bring a $10 million ransom down to the tunnel where the de-coupled train's engine car is now parked. The problem, as I see it, is that there is no way these guys are going to get out of that tunnel and then out of the teeming metropolis above, where a legion of cops is waiting for them to come staggering up with their cash-stuffed duffle bags and attempt to hail a rush-hour taxi.

In director Tony Scott's remake of "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," which hits theaters this Friday, a New York City MTA dispatcher (Denzel Washington) is thrown into the role of unlikely hero -- really, is there any other kind of hero? -- when hijackers, led by a man named Ryder (a tatted up John Travolta) take over a subway train with the intent of ransoming off the passengers-turned-hostages. In this all-too-brief clip, we can see the situation just starting to derail -- pun definitely intended -- as Ryder and his cohorts start rounding up riders on the moving train.

FROM MTV.COM: Over the past 15 years, Denzel Washington and Tony Scott have formed an impressive, adrenaline-pumping creative partnership, collaborating on thrillers like "Crimson Tide" and "Man on Fire." With Scott in the director's chair and Washington variously scrambling around a nuclear submarine and exacting bloody revenge on a Mexican gang, their films have been exercises in amped-up tension, whip-fast editing and straight-up badassery.

Their latest project, "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" (out Friday), is different only in one respect: Denzel spends most of the film sitting in a chair.

MTV's Josh Horowitz chatted up Denzel Washington recently, in support of his starring role in this week's summer action remake "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3." When Josh asked Washington if there was a genre he'd never touched, he responded with the news that he's working on some sort of comedy -- maybe with an action bent -- with Will Smith. The "Pelham" star didn't have much more to say than that, though with heavy-hitters like Smith and Washington involved it shouldn't be long before more emerges.

Washington isn't being entirely honest though. Anyone who's seen "Ricochet" knows he can be funny. That was a comedy, right? Head over to MTV.com to catch the rest of MTV Rough Cut: Denzel Washington.

'The Taking of Pelham 123'Welcome to a new weekly feature that I'll be running here on MTV Movies Blog. It's more of a poll really. It is a poll. As a fan of film, I try to get myself out to the movies every weekend. Even when there's nothing new that strikes my interest, there's something to be said for the experience of watching a fictional story unfold on a screen in a cavernous shared space. The movie-going experience is something we need to remember the value of, especially as home theater setups grow larger and more impressive.

Since I'm guessing that at least a few of you share my love for the in-theater experience, I'd like to hear what moves you to head out the door and lay down $10+ for a movie ticket. So I'll be creating this series of highly unscientific polls to get an idea of what your weekend plans are. I encourage you to sound off in the comments as well, to defend your picks, to rag (respectfully please) on the selections of other and to just generally shout your love of movies to the heavens.
