Director Sam Raimi made a name for himself (and boyhood friend Bruce Campbell) with a series of low-budget horror films that began in 1978 with "Within the Woods," a short college project that would chart the rest of his career. While that particular movie remains little seen, it led directly to the cult classic "Evil Dead" and its two sequels, "Evil Dead II" and "Army of Darkness," and forever cemented Sam Raimi as a bonafide member of the horror club.
So it was with some regret among his fans that -- as his career progressed -- Raimi drifted into other areas of cinema, most notably the billion dollar blockbuster "Spider-Man" franchise, and seemingly left his chainsaw and boomstick behind. That was until 2009, when he came roaring out of the gate with "Drag Me to Hell," the veteran filmmaker's return to the genre that made him a legend. The film stars Alison Lohman as a young bank officer who is hexed at the decrepit hands of a vengeful gypsie. Like most of Raimi's works, it's mixed with his personal flair and imbued with a sense of humor, while remaining throughout a very scary movie. "Drag Me To Hell" arrives on Blu-ray and DVD with only one true special feature -- that the "Production Video Diaries," a half-hour look at the making of the film. It's unfortunate that Raimi couldn't be persuaded to record a commentary, as it's always a treat getting inside his head. Read more...

To the surprise of no one, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" has the top spot so far this weekend. Friday showings nabbed another $26.8 million, giving the boy wizard a cumulative of $107 million in just three days. The sixth Potter installment, "Half-Blood Prince" is set to be the record breaker, and will probably beat the five-day box office take of the previous film, "Order of the Phoenix," which netted an impressive $139.7 million back in 2007. "Bruno" has finally made a name for himself in Hollywood! Sacha Baron Cohen's latest R-rated cultural satire nabbed the top spot this weekend, making a fashionable debut of $14.2 million. Though his reviews (71% at Rotten Tomatoes) and ticket sales are solid, Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that the gay Austrian fashionista might just be a little too shocking for audiences. "It only earned a "C" Cinemascore indicating domestic moviegoers didn't like what they saw -- perhaps because of the unexpectedly in-your-face male genitalia." Read more...

3. "The Hangover" ($17.2 million)
4. "Up" ($13 million)
5. "My Sister's Keeper" ($12 million)
"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is now the proud holder of a five-day box office record of $201.2 million, but Optimus Prime still comes in behind Batman. Poor reviews aren't keeping audiences away from the latest Michael Bay spectacle, which has continued to exceed expectations and break records every day that it's in theaters. Read more...

Some weekends, it's easy to predict what's going to come out on top! "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" topped our poll, and it destroyed the charts to take number one with $36.7 million. That would be enough to qualify it as a summer hit, but since it's debut was actually on Wednesday, that's just a drop of the bucket. Read more...

5. "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" ($11.3 million)
As the weekend progresses, audiences continue to fall hard for "The Proposal," which stayed strong at #1 by bringing in $34.1 million, finally knocking "The Hangover" down from its two week reign at the top. After weeks of explosions and CG, people were clearly in the mood for a little love... and perhaps all the pre-release publicity that focused on the nude scene between "Proposal" stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds helped a little. Before diving in with the coming weekend releases, let's take a look at last week's poll results. Despite coming in behind both "The Hangover" and "Up" at the box office this weekend, 33% of you chose Tony Scott's "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" as your weekend pick.
Surprisingly, the Eddie Murphy family fantasy "Imagine That" flopped in at #6 on the charts even though it took 26% of your votes here. Duncan Jones' sci-fi head-trip "Moon" came in at third with 19%, despite only opening in New York and Los Angeles this weekend. Read more...
When I saw Malin Akerman on the Movie Awards red carpet on Sunday night, she looked amazing. She wore a white pants suit with a pastel cami under the jacket. Very sleek. Well the actress outdid herself the following night, at yesterday's premiere for her new film "The Proposal."
Sunday's look had included some slicked hair, but Monday's 'do was much more feminine. Loose, wavy and maybe even a little bedhead, Malin's hair looked great with her short, shiny blue dress. The ensemble was a far cry from her skin tight "Watchmen" getup, but just as sexy. (Check out a shot of Malin Akerman after the jump, plus check out our "Proposal" premiere photo gallery.)
