FROM MTV MOVIES: Much like the unforgivable and unpredictable nature of the American Old West, the plight of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski's big-screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" has been quite a bumpy ride.

The film got the green light earlier this year, with Depp settled into the role of Tonto and Armie Hammer selected to play the Ranger. Then in August, Disney put a halt on the production with claims that the budget was too big. Just this week, negotiations ended on a happy note, with the production back in full swing and a tentative start date scheduled for early next year.

MTV News caught up with Depp as he promoted "The Rum Diary," which opens October 28, to find out why "Ranger" is so important to him and why the budget became such a big issue for the studio bigwigs.

Johnny Depp"The Lone Ranger" isn't so lonely anymore.

After much deliberating and negotiating, Disney has finally decided to move forward with Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski's remake of "The Lone Ranger." Though the movie now has a green light (again), it won't start filming until next year and thus likely won't be able to maintain its original December 21, 2012 release date. Deadline has the details.

Johnny DeppDisney's dance with "The Lone Ranger" just keeps getting trickier.

Deadline reports that Disney must accept the $215 million-ish budget that director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are presenting, or move forward without Verbinski... and, by extension, without Johnny Depp, who reportedly won't shoot the film without Verbinski behind the camera. Disney originally pulled the plug on "The Lone Ranger" because the budget got a bit too out of control, though last we heard they were negotiating. We'll keep you posted with further updates as soon as we have them.

Johnny DeppThe diagnosis isn't quite so grim as we might have thought on cancelled film projects "The Lone Ranger" and "The Dark Tower."

Bad news first: The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Gore Verbinski and the folks with "The Lone Ranger" have been trying to resolve the budget crisis that led Disney to pull the plug on the flick, but it might be to no avail. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" director managed to drop the film's planned budget from $244 million to $242 million, but Disney wants it to be closer to $220. That will involve some cutbacks from the cast and crew that THR doesn't think they're willing to make. Still, negotiations are negotiations, and there might be some wiggle room to get this Johnny Depp-starring movie off the ground.

Fortunately, things are looking up for Ron Howard's "The Dark Tower" adaptation.

Johnny Deppby Sterling Wong

It’s a tough economy out there right now, and even Hollywood, chief creator of dreams and fantasies, is feeling it. Even with proven box office rainmakers Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski attached, word got out last Friday that Disney was shutting down the production of "The Lone Ranger” because of its overblown $200 million price tag.

With franchises like “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and “Thor” proving that conservatively budgeted movies can still become hits, studios have seemingly tightened their reins and become more and more reluctant to greenlight expensive projects. Indeed, “The Lone Ranger” is not the only big-budget project Hollywood has closed its doors in recent months; after the jump, check out three other ambitious films that also got the boot this year.
