"The Last Station" has already made a big splash this awards season, nabbing major nominations with a couple critically lauded performances from thespian royalty. Both Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer have been recognized by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild for their roles in the film, and Oscar nods seem all but assured.

On Friday (January 15), moviegoers will finally get a chance to see what all the fuss is about when the film arrives in theaters. Plummer plays legendary Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, who creates his own religion, renounces his worldly possessions and stops sleeping with his wife. Planning on seeing "Avatar" again this weekend? Why not, right? It's January, a month when few quality titles are released. And as a fan of the sci-fi behemoth, you're hoping to help push James Cameron's film ahead of "Titanic" as the top-grossing movie of all time.

But hey, there are actually a few great films coming out this weekend. They're just in limited release, so you'll have to live in "select cities" to see them. Just take the 3-D glasses off for a few hours, look around and you may be able to find one of these worthwhile titles, all of them featuring amazing British actors, in your home or neighborhood arthouse in the coming weeks. Let's be honest with ourselves here: "Avatar" is in all likelihood going to dominate the weekend box office once again. It's just the way things are. Sure, the potential always exists that some other mega-release, perhaps "Sherlock Holmes" or "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," might sneak in for a surprise upset. But the odds continue to heavily favor James Cameron's sprawling sci-fi epic.

That said, there are some solid options this week for those who have had enough of Cameron's blue aliens for the time being. Fans of "Avatar" might be inclined to check out "The Book of Eli," a Denzel Washington-starring post-apocalyptic action flick in which the titular book -- and Washington's Eli, the man who protects it -- could be humanity's last hope. I've got to see this, if for no other reason than because Gary Oldman plays the villain. Read More...
