FINALLY! Joe Dante's horror film "The Hole" has been in the can for awhile now. It played last year at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the fest's very first 3-D award. For whatever reason, it hasn't yet surfaced in the states. I don't get it. Dante, who gave the world both "Gremlins" movies (among other things), is certainly a bankable name. "The Hole" is lacking in tentpole stars, sure, but it makes up for that with abundant creepiness. Just check out this clip, the first one that I've seen from the movie. Now seriously-- how about a U.S. release, people?!

I usually try to maintain some degree of mystery on what the eBay Prop-Watch pick is until AFTER the break, but today's item is too cool not to rave over from the offing. "Gremlins" is a classic. Comedy/horror at its best. Director Joe Dante has been pretty quiet since 1998's "Small Soldiers" -- a highly underrated gem and definite future Sick Day Stash fodder -- but he's about to re-emerge in a big way if the buzz on his 3-D thriller "The Hole," which just picked up accolades at the Venice Film Festival, is accurate.

So. Prop-Watch. Today you're bidding on a head. A Gremlin head. Not one of those cute, cuddly Gizmo-types. The ugly, green, lizard-like beast with big cat-like eyes and two rows of gleaming white teeth. Hit the jump to see what I mean. Read more...

If you've seen either "Coraline" or Pixar's "Up" in 3-D, you might have trouble believing there's a better 3-D movie from this year. But apparently the latest from Joe Dante ("Gremlins") is just that. "The Hole," which currently has no U.S. distributor or release date, won the Venice Film Festival's new Persol 3-D award after premiering at the festival this month.

So much for my earlier claim that "it’s really only down to 'Up' and 'Coraline' as serious contenders." Even as a huge fan of Dante's work -- including the highly underrated "Small Soldiers" and "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" -- I wasn't expecting his new thriller, about a family that moves into a house with a bottomless hole in the basement, to feature better use of 3-D than those hit films. UpThe Venice Film Festival may have lost all of its credibility now that the words “'My Bloody Valentine 3-D' is competing at Venice” can be uttered truthfully. When it was first announced a few weeks ago that the fest would feature a new 3-D award starting this year, I thought that perhaps world cinema was getting on board with the format. Apparently it’s not quite so -- at least not yet -- as today we learn that all nine films competing for the prize are from the U.S.

And yes, my joke about Venice trying to woo the Jonas Brothers to the fest may indeed be true. “Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Experience” is among the crop competing for the Persol 3-D Award, which also includes “Up,” “Monsters vs. Aliens,” “Battle for Terra,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Coraline,” the seemingly too-old “Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D,” and yes, “My Bloody Valentine 3-D.” Rounding out the nine is Joe Dante’s “The Hole,” which also makes its world premiere at the film festival.
