Sylvester StalloneA sequel to "The Expendables" was a foregone conclusion given the fantastic box-office success of Sylvester Stallone's throwback action flick. But a sequel without Stallone directing? We didn't see that coming.

The Los Angeles Times reports that while Stallone is returning in front of the camera as aging mercenary Barney Ross, he won't be stepping behind it. Sly is reportedly meeting with prospective directors, however, indicating that he still has a large creative role and investment in the success of the "Expendables" brand.

Frankly, we're excited about the idea of a new director coming in and taking aim at the hard-R action franchise, even if we're sad to see Stallone step aside. After the jump, check out a few of the directors we'd gladly accept in his place.

If the market tanks today, you know who's to blame. All work at the New York Stock Exchange ground to a halt early this morning as Sylvester Stallone and his "Expendables" co-stars invaded Wall Street's hallowed ground.

They came to celebrate their #1 movie and to ring the exchange's opening bell, but what Sly, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews really accomplished was distracting traders and analysts from doing their jobs. Given the sorry state of our nation's economy, these number-crunchers were probably thankful for the diversion.

For his part, Stallone confessed that he was hoping to for a bit of financial advice. "We went to the bank, they turned down our credit," Stallone joked with MTV News. "So we thought we'd go to the source. That's why we're here. Not to promote a movie. It's to get a house loan."

Believe it or not, there's still plenty of fight left in the old dog known as Sylvester Stallone, as seen by the success of "The Expendables," the actor, writer and director's 1980s action cinema throwback that secured box office gold this past weekend. With victory in mind, it's clear that Stallone and the studio executives at Lionsgate are already thinking about sequel possibilities. But really, there's only one sequel idea that makes any kind of sense: expanding on the team led by Trench, Stallone's mercenary rival played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in an all-too-brief cameo role.

It's the perfect comeback movie for Schwarzenegger, and it opens up all sorts of doors for further casting excellence. After the jump, we've got a few suggestions for who could saddle up alongside Trench as part of the "Expendables" sequel's new team! Read more...

"The Expendables" is out in theaters today! Writer/director/star Sylvester Stallone's throwback to '80s action is packed with stars. Jason Statham. Jet Li. Mickey Rourke. DOLPH LUNDGREN. (that's not a typo-- every letter in Dolph's name is as important as the one before it) There are also a couple of notable cameos, from Stallone's fellow action stars of old Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their time in the movie is short, but see that trio together on screen for the first time... it's something special.

Schwarzenegger has been absent from the movies world for a long time of course, ever since he became California's Gubernator. He's been upping his profile more and more recently, leading many to believe that the former action icon will be returning to acting when his term of office ends next year. He certainly seems to be enjoying himself in "The Expendables." Stallone told MTV as much in a recent interview. And after the jump you can see the two having some fun together in today's Daily TwitPic. Read more...
