'Terminator Salvation'Forget about your Wall-Es and your R2-D2s. As "Terminator Salvation" will prove to audiences this weekend, like so many sci-fi flicks before it, robots are simply not to be trusted. Their cold logic, susceptibility to tampering and tendency to regard human beings as "inferior" are all red flags. Real world concerns like the threat of nuclear annihilation and global warming are important of course, but killer robots will be the end of us all if we're not careful.

As I mentioned above, Skynet's 'Terminator' machines are just one example of the constant robot threat we all face. Prescient Hollywood creatives have been warning us for years, decades even, that our species will eventually be crushed beneath a cold, metal fist. Consider these examples… Read more...

Tom Hanks in 'Angels & Demons'This weekend, audiences will be perched on the edges of their seats as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) works to save Vatican City from the destructive potential of a single gram of antimatter in "Angels & Demons." Unless Hollywood’s power players lose their collective minds, it likely won’t be the last time the human race is threatened by a fictional destructive device either. It certainly isn’t the first. Just take a look at these other Hollywood-spawned weapons of mass destruction. Look at them and take heart in the fact that most of them won't ever exist. Probably. Read more...

'The Day the Earth Stood Still'#1. "The Day the Earth Stood Still" ($31 million)
#2. "Four Christmases" ($13.3 million)
#3. "Twilight" ($8.01 million)
#4. "Bolt" ($7.51 million)
#5. "Australia" ($4.29 million)

20th Century Fox may have had a weak year at the box office -- but "The Day the Earth Stood Still" came through for them over the weekend, grossing $31 million domestically, and $70 million worldwide.

Then again, it was an easy weekend for "Earth," with only two new films to compete with -- Freddy Rodriguez and John Leguizamo's "Nothing Like the Holidays," which came in at #7 with $3.5 million, and the animated "Delgo," which brought in a sad $915,840, and didn't even crack the top ten. Keanu Reeves in 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'Story by Todd Gilchrist

Come December 9, 2008, "The Day the Earth Stood Still" will enjoy the widest release in motion picture history. In addition to showing the upcoming sci-fi flick (watch exclusive clips here) on earthbound screens worldwide starting on Friday, December 12, Fox intends to transmit the film into deep space, qualifying DTESS’ opening as “the world’s first galactic motion picture release,” according to a studio announcement.

When the movie -- which stars Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly -- hits theaters Friday, Fox, working with Deep Space Communications Network in Cape Canaveral, will simultaneously transmit the film through space at 186,000 miles per second. Civilizations orbiting Alpha Centauri will be able to view and blog about the film starting in 2012, which means that human audiences should receive their reviews of Reeves’ performance by 2016, accounting for an eight-year roundtrip communication time.
