The A-Team on DVDWhen writer-director Joe Carnahan's adaptation of the beloved '80s TV show "The A-Team" hit theaters this summer, it seemed poised for blockbuster awesomeness. It had a built-in fanbase, a talented director and a spot-on cast -- Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper (pictured) as Faceman, UFC fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as B.A. and "District 9" star Sharlto Copley as "Howling Mad" Murdock. But for some reason it failed to find a blockbuster-sized auidence.

When Carnahan called up MTV to chat about the movie's release on DVD and Blu-ray (it hit stores December 14), he talked about why he thinks it didn't connect with audiences in theaters, dished on the Blu-ray's extended director's cut and revealed his thoughts on an "A-Team" sequel. He also spilled the beans on his "'Jaws'-like' next film "The Grey," which stars Liam Neeson as the leader of a group of oil drillers being hunted by wolves in the Arctic. Sounds chilling. Sharlto CopleySharlto Copley wasn't an actor when his pal Neill Blomkamp asked him to do a read-through of the script for the sci-fi thriller "District 9." Blomkamp liked Copley's performance so much that he asked him to play the lead in the film, tt went on to be a hit, and Copley immediately shot to stardom.

Copley followed up that film with something notably lighter, a turn as loopy ex-military man "Howling Mad" Murdock in Joe Carnahan's "A-Team" movie. If it seems like he was born to play the role, that makes sense: As Copley told MTV News in an interview to promote the movie's December 14 DVD release, he grew up watching "The A-Team" and even felt a special connection to Murdock. We're not sure what that says about Copley, but he certainly was a lovely fellow to chat with. The South African dished on everything from what he'd like to see happen in an "A-Team" sequel to hilarious DVD extras to the time he tried to mock-seduce co-star Jessica Biel with a mid-take rendition of Justin Timberlake's (a.k.a Biel's boyfriend) "SexyBack." We love it when a mid-shoot seduction comes together.

Look. I don't care what the box office numbers say. "The A-Team" was awesome! It should have owned this past weekend. Instead it finished in a distant second to "The Karate Kid." It's unfortunate, but there's still plenty of time in the summer for "A-Team" to build up some steam.

Director Joe Carnahan isn't necessarily planning out a sequel with his first outing not even a week old, but he did have an idea for the "A-Team" opening which went unshot, and which he hopes to use if a sequel does happen.

"In the original opening of the film... all you saw was Hannibal with these goggles on and this kind of white environment," he explained. "You realized as the camera pulled back that there were sled dogs. As you pulled back even further you realized they were sled dogs going over the dunes in the desert." Read More...

Rebooting franchises isn't always a popular idea, but in many cases, it's a profitable one. Such was the case this weekend as two updates on classic properties entered the box office arena in the form of "The Karate Kid" and "The A-Team," with the kung fu-centric reboot coming out in first place. A funny thing happens in "The A-Team." An attractive, young starlet, Jessica Biel has a lead role and yet she never once bares much more than an arm or two. In fact, it's Bradley Cooper who shows off the most skin. It's an odd gender reversal; typically, a Hollywood blockbuster puts just as strong a focus on objectifying female cast members as it does on giant explosions and over-the-top set pieces. According to Biel, who spoke to MTV's Josh Horowitz at the "A-Team" press junket, it was all part of director Joe Carnahan's plan.

"That was a big part that Joe and I talked about," she said. "This character is not gratuitous. She's not there to look cute and be pretty and be a girl thrown into the mix. She's really there for a plot reason. She's the lynchpin of the story." Read More...
