TLautTaylor Lautner wasn't able to work with Gus Van Sant on "Breaking Dawn," so now he's created his own project for the director to helm.

MTV News reports that Lautner optioned a nonfiction article from The New Yorker, and has convinced Van Sant to direct it for him. "Milk" scribe Dustin Lance Black will pen the project, with Lautner in the lead role. Little more is known about the film, but it will be Lautner's first dramatic role to date.

Johnny Depp"The Lone Ranger" isn't so lonely anymore.

After much deliberating and negotiating, Disney has finally decided to move forward with Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski's remake of "The Lone Ranger." Though the movie now has a green light (again), it won't start filming until next year and thus likely won't be able to maintain its original December 21, 2012 release date. Deadline has the details.

Kurt RussellQuentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" is getting a bit of a casting make-over.

First up, Kurt Russell is reuniting with his "Death Proof" director in the upcoming film. He'll be replacing Kevin Costner as the psychotic Ace Woody, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Also reuniting with the director is "Kill Bill's" Laura Cayouette, who THR reports will be playing Leonardo DiCaprio's widowed sister.

In related news, THR has learned that Christoph Waltz injured his pelvis during training for "Django Unchained," and that's why he was unable to attend the New York premiere of "Carnage" on Friday.

Robert Downey Jr. has a packed shooting schedule ahead of him between "The Avengers" and other projects, but even he isn't too busy for acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.

The "Iron Man" superstar and "There Will Be Blood" director are reportedly teaming together for "Inherent Vice," an adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel about a Los Angeles private eye who wholeheartedly embraces the notions of free-love and psychedelic thinking. Deadline reports the news, but there's no indication of when the film might shoot, and even Downey and Anderson's official participation remains unconfirmed at this point.

But that's not all the news we've got for you today. Read about Steve Carell's upcoming dramatic turn, the maybe-maybe-not adaptation of "Dead Island" and more past the jump!

If "Toy Story 3" left you with a lingering hope for the continuing adventures of Woody and Buzz, don't worry — they're coming.

We already knew about the Hawaii-centric short attached to "Cars 2," and now comes word of another "Toy Story" tale that'll play in front of "The Muppets," arriving just in time for Christmas! There's no word on the short's story, but here's hoping that it involves a return trip to Sunnyside.

As any devout fan of "The Office" already knows, comedy heavyweight Will Ferrell is set to spend four cushy episodes with Dunder Mifflin's merry band of misfits, as a special kind of send-off for star Steve Carell's big departure.

MTV News already established the fact that the cast is super excited for Ferrell's visit, but when I caught up with Jenna Fischer during the press day for her upcoming comedy "Hall Pass," I had to find out what Ferrell's been up to on their set.

Will FerrellSan Diego's most delightful news team is getting back together, but instead of reporting on pregnant pandas while wearing butterfly collars, the guys will be slinging paper in good ol' Scranton, Pennsylvania. Yep, word broke yesterday that Will Ferrell and Steve Carell — co-stars of 2004's "Anchorman" — will be sharing the screen once again, this time on Carell's home turf, otherwise known as NBC's "Office."

Word is that Ferrell will be appearing for a four-episode arc as a branch manager at Dunder Mifflin whose inappropriateness is rivaled only by that of Carell's Michael Scott. Ferrell, of course, has mastered the art of awkward, uncomfortable, beyond-all-reason behavior. Here are five roles we're hoping the comedian draws on for his turn on "The Office."

Allen Gamble ("The Other Guys")
Ferrell played a cop opposite Mark Wahlberg in one of last year's highest-grossing comedies, and their odd-couple interactions gave the movie its soul. His performance was perfectly calibrated for "The Office": excruciating, hilarious, and leaving viewers with the thought, "Man, I'm glad I don't work with anyone like that!"

Steve CarellSteve Carell is something of a rock star in his career, having transformed himself from a quirky commentator on "The Daily Show" to both a mainstream and indie success with films like "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" and "Little Miss Sunshine." It makes sense, then, that Carell plans to elevate his rock star status in a literal sense with a biopic of Dennis Lambert, the songwriter/producer who became a rock sensation in the Philippines late in his life. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley wrote the untitled script based on "Of All The Things," a 2008 documentary directed by Lambert's son Jody.

"Dennis left the music business [after his solo album flopped] and was selling real estate in Florida when he was told by a Filipino promoter that he's still huge there because his album had been so successful. The promoter begged him to tour," Daley told Deadline of Lambert's true story. "Finally, in his 60s and 20 years removed from the music business, Dennis says yes and suddenly he's playing packed 10,000 seat arenas. The movie will be about what happens when a middle-aged guy finds himself a rock star who realizes dreams he never got to live out."

Carell is hardly the first actor to take a crack at the rock genre, of course. He joins a solid list of classic cinematic rockers, such as the ones we've listed after the jump! Read More...

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Ms. Bullock's publicist, who informed me that there is absolutely no truth to this news. Sorry folks-- we usually get all of the facts first, but this one slipped by. Move along, there's nothing to see here.

Steve Carell is fresh off the weekend opening of "Dinner for Schmucks" and now Production Weekly is reporting (via The Playlist) that he may be reuniting with some of his old pals for an upcoming gig. "Little Miss Sunshine" producers Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa and Polly Johnsen are prepping an adaptation of Tom Perrotta's 2007 book "The Abstinence Teacher." It was originally announced with directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris attached to helm back in 2006, a few months after their "Sunshine" released. Now it's back with no mention of Dayton/Faris but the "Sunshine" producers on board... and high-profile talents Carell and Sandra Bullock set to star.

The story follows a liberal-minded divorcee in middle America, a sex education teacher who doesn't see eye to eye with the more conservative folks in her community. A wrinkle enters the story in the form of the teacher's daughter's soccer coach, a born again Christian whom she falls for. Bullock would presumably take the teacher role and Carell, the coach. He did a fine job of delivering a more serious performance in "Sunshine" and I look forward to seeing him do so again in "Teacher."

"Dinner for Schmucks" is out today, bringing home Steve Carell's third movie of the year, after "Date Night" and "Despicable Me." A few weeks ago, Carell sat down -- and I use the term loosely -- with MTV's Josh Horowitz for an informal chat. A very informal chat. Remember Josh's encounter with John C. Reilly back in June? This is more awkward, more disturbing. Hit play and prepare to be horrified.
