FROM MTV.COM: Monday's shocking announcement that one of the decade's most successful film franchises has thrown in the towel on a fourth installment hit fans as hard as a Sandman punch to the face. Now, Raimi and Tobey and Kirsten and everyone else are going to move on to other projects, and all we can do is miss them — and, of course, look back on the better days.

Remembering back to the 2001 press conference in a wrestling ring that started it all — yep, I was there! — all the way up to Monday's sad goodbye, it somehow seems like "Spider-Man 4" was the most dramatic movie in the series, simply through its production twists and turns. And so, it is with great affection that we look back on the roller-coaster ride of the Spidey movie we'll never see.

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Face it, Tiger — your franchise just hit a wall.

Sony has curtailed plans for "Spider-Man 4" and opted to reboot Peter Parker's big-screen adventures without director Sam Raimi, star Tobey Maguire or the rest of the film's cast, according to a report that first broke on Deadline Hollywood Daily earlier today. The site reported that Raimi and the studio parted ways after script disagreements proved so insurmountable that the planned summer 2012 release date was in danger.

The studio later confirmed the report in an official announcement (posted in full below) that, along with outlining plans to start over with a teenage Peter Parker, indicated that a new "Spider-Man" movie was still planned for 2012.

FROM SPLASH PAGE: "Daybreakers" star Willem Dafoe dropped by Splash Page HQ yesterday to chat us up about the film, which hits theaters Friday (January 8). While he was here, we managed to sneak in a few questions about — you guessed it — the "Spider-Man" films and the villain that kicked off Sam Raimi's blockbuster, web-friendly franchise, Green Goblin.

Would he be up for making a return appearance? After all, no one stays dead in the comics world. And what about those "Spider-Man 4" production delays? The actor touched on all of it in our exclusive interview.

"It all depends on the story," said Dafoe of the likelihood that we'll see him again. "The Green Goblin, there's plenty more to do, because that's not so well defined. And the Norman Osborn character is a good, solid, half-comic, half-dramatic character, so I could always revisit that."

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Tobey Maguire may not know the histories of all the villain picks in Splash Page's recent "Spider-Man 4" poll, but he does know what director Sam Raimi likes. The Lizard came in first during our fan voting, with Carnage taking second and Mysterio landing in third place. Maguire reacted to all three choices, but clearly has an opinion on which picks are most likely.

"I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know -- I like them as villains," Maguire told MTV News. "I think they're great, and Lizard obviously has a very personal relationship with Peter Parker, so we often will go towards that kind of stuff."

FROM SPLASH PAGE: Sure, Anne Hathaway is the latest in a long line of rumored contenders for the role of Black Cat in "Spider-Man 4" (even though there's no confirmation the character is even in the film), but does anyone remember another rumor from a few years back that cast an entirely different actress in the role?

Well, even if you didn't remember the pre-"Spider-Man 3" rumor that had "Dollhouse" actress Eliza Dushku playing cat burglar Felicia Hardy, we did — and we asked her about it when she dropped by Splash Page HQ a while back.

"Don't you love the Internet and the fans out there?" Dushku laughed when MTV Movies Editor Josh Horowitz asked if she'd seen the fan-made "Spider-Man 4" posters with her as Black Cat. "They do it up!"

FROM SPLASH PAGE: A while back, the third "Batman" movie seemed to be the subject of new casting rumors every day — from Michael Caine's assertion that Johnny Depp would play The Riddler to a British tabloid's "scoop" that Shia LaBeouf would play Robin. Nowadays, though, "Spider-Man 4" has been receiving the lion's share of casting rumors, including quite a few that have popped up, circulated widely and subsequently been debunked within the last week.

Last week, many blogs echoed an anonymous rumor that Rachel McAdams would play Black Cat, only to have the actress dismiss the casting report this week. The dust had barely settled, whoever, when another Black Cat rumor hit the 'Net — this time, featuring Julia Stiles.

So, now we find ourselves wondering which one of these rumors you'd like to see become official. Is it one of the Black Cat rumors or something else entirely? What about Dylan Baker's potential return as The Lizard or Bruce Campbell's "meaty" cameo?

FROM SPLASH PAGE: We recently brought you the news that Dylan Baker will reprise his role as Dr. Curt Connors in "Spider-Man 4," heralding some hope that The Lizard could finally make his long-awaited debut as Peter Parker's newest nemesis. But let's not forget some of Spidey's other contenders, like the Green Goblin.

While the villain might thrive on the bright lights of Broadway courtesy of Alan Cumming, original Green Goblin actor Willem Dafoe's future involvement in the Sam Raimi-directed franchise isn't exactly a certainty—in fact, Dafoe himself still doesn't know whether he'll appear in future "Spider-Man" movies.

"Let's put it this way — no one's called," the actor told MTV News in a recent interview

FROM SPLASH PAGE: We might know who the villains are in "Spider-Man 4" or whether Sam Raimi will be back for "Spider-Man 5" and "Spider-Man 6," but when it comes to the connection between the "Spider-Man" franchise and a potential "Venom" movie, well...

Okay, Raimi couldn't give us much on that question, either.

But we did ask the celebrated director about how the two universes will connect, if at all, when Spider-Man's black-clad nemesis swings off into his own solo movie.

FROM SPLASH PAGE: As we reported last week, much about "Spider-Man 4" is still in flux: Gary Ross is currently hard at work on a draft of the script after getting notes from director Sam Raimi and they claim they're still figuring out which villain makes the most sense to compliment Peter Parker's character growth in the picture. What's more, beyond the return of franchise stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, few decisions about the cast have been made.

All of which makes comments that Raimi's buddy Bruce Campbell made last month extremely interesting, when he told Access Hollywood he'd have a major role in the new film.

When MTV News had a chance to talk to Raimi, of course we needed to know if Campbell was speaking the truth. After sneaking into cameos in the first three "Spider-Man" flicks, has the "Evil Dead" star really nabbed a major part in the fourth installment?

FROM SPLASH PAGE: It's a comic fan's fever dream: call up director Sam Raimi and tell him which villain he should select to do battle against the web-spinning wonderboy in "Spider-Man 4." Alas, that just ain't gonna happen. But we came pretty close.

In a chat with Raimi last week, we presented the results of our recent Who Should Be The 'Spider-Man 4' Villain poll to the man himself. And he loved who readers picked. (FYI: The Lizard nabbed 29 percent of the vote, while Carnage came in a close second with 26 percent.)
