For most of you, Max Brooks needs no introduction. He wrote the novel "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War," which is currently on the road to getting a big screen adaptation with Marc Forster directing a script from Matthew Michael Carnahan.
Brooks was kind enough to take some time to chat with me a few weeks ago while he was promoting the Starz Inside documentary, "Zombiemania," which you can catch replays of this week (check your local listings for times). During the interview, I had to ask for a kickass zombie movies list to run with this week's special Halloween coverage. Brooks was more than happy to oblige, and he delivered quite a list. The last one in particular blew my mind, and I welcome anyone who's seen it to write in their reviews in the comments section below or @MTVMoviesBlog on Twitter. Read more...
One of the movies that I expect will perform well this weekend -- off of some solid buzz and a great cast, primarily -- is "Zombieland." They may not have penetrated the zeitgeist to the same degree as vampires and werewolves (thanks "Twilight"!), but the shambling, brain-eating dead are most definitely "in."
There aren't any "Zombieland" props up on eBay yet, but I've found something similarly relevant and just as cool for today's eBay Prop-Watch. It's an item from the inventive Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg zombie horror-comedy, "Shaun of the Dead." Hit the jump to see for yourself. Read more...
Science has discovered that "if zombies actually existed, an attack by them would lead to the collapse of civilisation unless dealt with quickly and aggressively." The quote comes from the BBC, reporting on a research paper published in the book "Infectious Diseases Modeling Research Projects" (and thanks to Sci Fi Wire for pointing out this AMAZING revelation). So in case you were worried, don't. Scientists on this planet are hard at work figuring out how best to prepare for the inevitable(?) zombie plague.
I've got a few tips for them too. Scientists can be a stuffy bunch. They prefer the safety of their labs (at least for the purposes of this writeup). Needless to say, they don't get out to the movies so much. I do though, and I've seen a lot of zombie movies. Certainly enough to know which ones we should be showing young kids as a warning of what not to do when the dead rise from their graves. (note: None of these movies should actually be shown to small children) Read more...
At the end of zombie comedy “Shaun of the Dead,” the flesh-eating ghoulies that terrorize London are domesticated—integrated into everyday life as grocery store employees and game show contestants. Coldplay even starts a ZOMB-AID charity to benefit the “mobile deceased.” Clearly, the makers of “Shaun” had real affection for their undead and couldn’t leave them behind.
Now director and co-writer Edgar Wright will have a chance once again to chill with his reanimated corpses as he screens the film in Toronto during a month-and-a-half long festival of the Brit auteur’s own work and many of his favorite films. Read more...
