So much goes into predicting and ultimately deciding Oscar nominations that it can be difficult to decide which award shows to pay attention to and which to ignore. This week's Oscar nominations, however, proved that one award show in particular can be very useful in predicting some of the Academy's more surprising picks.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards announced their nominations weeks before the Academy's and showed that their picks should not be overlooked during award season. SAG both honored and turned away many of the same performances that the Academy shocked and snubbed earlier this week.

One of the biggest surprises coming out the Academy Award nominations from Tuesday (January 24) was how significant the SAG nominees ended up being. No SAG nomination for Albert Brooks in "Drive"? No Oscar nomination for Albert Brooks in "Drive."

It might be easy to dismiss them, but the SAG awards mean a great deal in the grand scheme of all things Oscars. The winners there often repeat later at the Academy Awards. When actors are choosing the winners, people pay attention.

SAG Award Nominations Are In, 'Help,' 'Artist' Lead Way

Nominations for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are in, and Emma Stone is leading the way. Her summer sleeper hit, "The Help," nabbed the most movie nominations with four, followed by Oscar-fav "The Artist" with three and a handful of others with two ("Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "Moneyball").

On the television side of things, "Modern Family" soared to the top of the pack with five nods, while "30 Rock" and "Dexter" each garnered two. HBO reeled in the most total noms with 11.

The SAG Awards ceremony will air live on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. ET

'The King's Speech' Director And Cast Opposed To Re-Editing The Film For A PG-13 Rating

The King's SpeechWith "The King's Speech" pulling ahead in the Oscar race, Harvey Weinstein may be even more anxious to have the film re-edited to reach a wider audience.

Last week it was reported by the Los Angeles Times that Weinstein, whose Oscar-friendly studio The Weinstein Co. released the film, wanted to find a way to trim an intricate scene of the currently R-rated movie in which King George VI (Colin Firth) lets a string of expletives fly under the instruction of his speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush).

Weinstein argued that the success of the film in Great Britain was due to a lower rating, as he told the LA Times, "The British numbers are huge because the rating lets families see the movie together,” he said, adding, “[Director] Tom (Hooper) and I are trying to find a unique way to do this that keeps his vision of the movie.”

But, it seems Hooper may have no intention of changing his vision after all. Hooper, who bested "The Social Network" director David Fincher in an upset win at the Director's Guild of America Awards on Saturday (January 29), spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the possible re-cut.

"I wouldn’t support cutting the film in any way. I think we looked at whether it’s possible to bleep out the f—s and stuff, but I’m not going to actually cut that part," Hooper said of the scene in contention. Read More...

SAG Awards 2011: The MTV News Live Blog

The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards delivered a serious déjà vu experience, with most of the evening's winners being repeats of the previous weekend's Golden Globes extravaganza. Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side") and Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart"), for instance, triumphed at both ceremonies. This year's SAG Awards take place two weeks after the Globes. Will the results be the same?

That would mean a dominating performance from "The Social Network," which nabbed four Globes, including Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Director. But "The King's Speech" is on the rise, locking up 12 Oscar nominations last week after Colin Firth won best dramatic actor at the Globes. And never count out, for that matter, "True Grit," which rebounded from a shutout in the Globe nominations to become a surprise box office hit ($148 million and counting) and then garner 10 Oscar nods. Oh, and today is Christian Bale's birthday, and the birthday boy could well walk away with supporting actor statue for "The Fighter."

All of which is to say: we have our suspicions and our theories, our personal favs and hoped-for dark horses, but there's no way to tell what's actually gonna go down until the show goes live. By now, the celebs like James Franco, Natalie Portman and Justin Timberlake have sashayed down the red carpet, done their best to avoid the rain, and entered the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. SAG Awards Nominations 2011: 'True Grit' Snags Two Much Deserved Nods For Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld!

True GritAs awards season trudges on towards the Academy Awards early next year, we're seeing a lot of repeat offenders getting love, while other films have been surprisingly ignored altogether.

That trend is partially continued with today's announcement of the SAG Awards nominations. As expected, films like "The King's Speech" and "The Fighter" are doing just fine, with both of those pictures earning four nominations a piece.

But there's a pleasant surprise for fans of the Coen Bros., too: "True Grit," the directing pair's soon-to-release Western epic, snagged two nods from the SAGs after getting shut out completely at the Golden Globes. Read More...
