Only two days after Tim Burton announced that he would like Robert Downey Jr. to be the puppeteer Geppetto in his upcoming live-action "Pinocchio" film, the "Iron Man" and "The Avengers" star has confirmed that he would be interested in the role. In other parts of the internet, Television Without Pity's annual "Movies Without Pity" awards show is starting up, Rob Marshall has started talking "Pirates of the Caribbean 5" and Daniel Radcliffe's promo reel for this week's "Saturday Night Live" has us cracking up.
It's January 11, and you're here for today's daily news round-up.

Like so many other big budget movie adventures of recent years, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is sailing into theaters on the increasingly trendy wave of 3-D. But unlike the vast majority of these post-conversion blockbusters, "On Stranger Tides" sports a key difference: this one was shot from the ground up in 3-D.
"We shot it in 3-D," director Rob Marshall told MTV News of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" filmmaking process. "It wasn't converted. It wasn't done on a soundstage against a green screen. It's all very real."
Yes, very real indeed — a real pain in the you know where, if Marshall's recollection of shooting the film is any indication.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" sets sail in a week and a half from now, but you don't have to wait until May 20 to start getting excited about Captain Jack Sparrow's fantastic voyage back into theaters. Yesterday, I showed you MTV's re-cut version of the "Pirates" trailer, this time with enough Lego toys to fill out an armada. Pretty fun stuff — not to mention incredibly impressive, if I do say so myself, and even more so when you realize just how eerily similar our Lego trailer is to the actual "Pirates" preview.
See? Like I said, impressive! Big tip of the cap to MTV's Matt Harper and Brian Jacks for their hard work on this one. And I'm not the only one recognizing their efforts — indeed, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" director Rob Marshall has seen our Lego trailer, and he was similarly blown away by what he saw.

Whether he means to or not, Captain Jack Sparrow has a nasty habit of bringing people together.
For his latest trick, the quirky captain has joined "Pirates of the Caribbean" collaborators Johnny Depp and director Rob Marshall together again for a remake of "The Thin Man," Deadline reports. The story centers on a married couple — the husband a hard-drinking former detective and his wife a wealthy heiress — that work together solving crimes.
There's more going on in the Hollywood news scene today. After the jump, get your first look at Brad Pitt's new gangster role as well as the 16th President of the United States at his vampire-hunting best!

Spring is in the air, and you know what that means: it's time to go back to the "Caribbean."
Yahoo premiered the latest trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and it's the best look yet at the upcoming film. The Rob Marshall-directed installment of the "Pirates" saga looks as close to the spirit of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" that we've seen since it hit theaters, winning us over instantly with its charming manipulation of our favorite pirate tales.
After the jump we break down what's new in the trailer, what we loved and why we can't wait until May 20.

We're still about four months away from "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" sailing into theaters, but that hasn't stopped Disney from setting the wheels in motion for a fifth installment in the swashbuckling franchise.
Earlier this week, Johnny Depp told Entertainment Weekly that he's already had discussions about returning to the role of rum-loving, adventure-seeking Captain Jack Sparrow for a fifth go-around. "As long as we can put all the puzzle pieces together, I would most definitely consider it," he told the magazine.
Well, today Disney started trying to put the puzzle pieces together. According to Deadline, the studio has hired scribe Terry Rossio to write the script for "Pirates of the Caribbean 5."

Someone at Disney better be out buying a whole lot of rum, because we're going to be getting a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow in the near future.
The fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, "On Stranger Tides," has finally wrapped principle photography, and Disney must have really liked what they saw — because according to HitFix, we're going to be getting two more "Pirates" films after "On Stranger Tides" hits theaters in 2011.
Just like "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End" were shot back-to-back as the second and third "Pirates" movies, these next two installments will be filmed back-to-back whenever Disney can get its stars free, presumably at some point in 2011 after Johnny Depp is done filming "The Lone Ranger." Without official studio confirmation, it's safest to take this latest news as a rumor for now — but it's one heck of a rumor, to say the least. Read more...

Walt Disney Pictures announced today that it'll be giving Jack Sparrow fans quite the festive gift this holiday season: the first trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."
The trailer will debut online at 1 p.m. PST (4 p.m. ET) on Monday, December 13, and will also run ahead of Disney's "Tron: Legacy" when that 3-D flick hits theaters on Friday, December 17.
Johnny Depp reprises his iconic role as adventure-seeking, perennially tipsy pirate Jack Sparrow in "On Stranger Tides," the fourth installment in the swashbuckling, blockbustering franchise and the first to be directed by Rob Marshall. It's also the first film in the series that doesn't co-star Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. But not to worry -- a couple of new additions should ease the pain of those losses. Read more...

Seriously, how can anyone keep track of the ridiculous number of "Wizard of Oz" sequel, prequel and spin-off projects that are currently in development? There's "Oz, The Great and Powerful," starring Robert Downey Jr. and possibly being directed by Sam Raimi, which explores the story of how the Wizard came to preside over Oz. There's also Todd McFarlane's rather unique vision of the universe, "The Twisted Land of Oz," which is set many years after the 1939. And "Oz: The Return to Emerald City," from "History of Violence" writer Josh Olson.
The big papa among them is also the one with the least development (as far as we know): an adaptation of Gregory Maguire's 1995 book "Wicked," which details the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West. The story has already been adapted into a hit Broadway musical, a movie version of which has long been in development. Now it seems there's some momentum building, as Deadline reports that some of the Broadway production's key figures have met with a number of talented filmmakers -- specifically James Mangold, Rob Marshall, Ryan Murphy and J.J. Abrams -- about taking on the gig.
Who would you choose? Why? After the jump I consider the four candidates (so far) and pit them against one another in a battle to the death! Or, you know, just talk a little bit about each one. Whichever works. Read more...

Captain Jack Sparrow is sailing the Caribbean seas without Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann in the currently shooting "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," but he's certainly not alone — actor Johnny Depp is joined by a colorful cast of characters including Ian McShane and "Pirates" veteran Geoffrey Rush. Then, of course, there's Penelope Cruz, joining the production as Jack Sparrow's latest love interest — a lethal lady who just so happens to be a cunning pirate, much like Sparrow himself.
"She's so fiery and fun," producer Jerry Bruckheimer told MTV News about Cruz's involvement in the "Pirates" franchise. "I can just imagine how the screen is going to sizzle with [Cruz and Depp] on it." Read more...
