Cast shotWith this Friday’s release of "Fast Five" barreling towards us, MTV Movies Blog is taking the time to look in the rearview at the four films that paved the way. First up, the movie that started it all.

There have been a host of car racing movies that came before "The Fast and the Furious," but its debut in 2001 saw the rise of the sub-genre’s biggest and most popular franchise ever. Described as “gritty and gratifying” by Variety, the Rob Cohen-directed film cemented the popularity of Vin Diesel after his role in "Pitch Black" the previous year and used an ensemble cast composed of young Hollywood’s biggest stars of the time. Although American car racing movies had long relied on the horsepower of homegrown ‘muscle’ cars, “The Fast and the Furious” super-charged its debut by relying primarily on vehicles from the Asian import scene that had become staples of car culture since the mid-80s but had never been depicted in a mainstream U.S. film before.

In “The Fast and the Furious,” Domenic Toretto (Diesel) is heading up a street gang that the authorities believe is responsible for a string of high-speed truck hijackings. After putting undercover cop Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) into the mix to land on Toretto’s crew, he comes to know Toretto’s real story while falling for his younger sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster). Although he eventually breaks his cover, O’Connor comes to the rescue of the Torettos when they're fingered for the crimes of a more reprehensible street gang and their activities.

Tyler PerryTyler Perry is perhaps best known for his "Madea" movies, in which he inhabits the role of an overweight and overly aggressive elderly woman with varying degrees of hilarity. But for his next role, Perry is more likely to hunt down the kinds of deranged men who routinely dress up as overweight and overly aggressive elderly women.

According to Deadline, QED has packaged an adaptation of the James Patterson novel "I, Alex Cross" with Perry attached to the title role and Rob Cohen directing.

In signing up for the film, Perry takes over the franchise role of D.C.-based detective and psychologist Alex Cross from Morgan Freeman, who already played the character in two films, "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider." Read More...

"Wolfman's got nards." With those three words, a cult legend was born. "The Monster Squad" is a bona fide '80s underground classic. Director/co-writer Fred Dekker, along with Shane Black, crafted a story in which a group of small-town kids obsessed with classic movie monsters find themselves caught up in a Dracula-led plot to unleash hell on the world. Along the way they meet Frankenstein's monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy and the Gill Man (i.e. the Creature from the Black Lagoon). There are plot holes a-plenty, questionable performances and middling production values... and yet something about this movie endures even today. I'm a fan, and proud of it.

Now, in Hollywood's misguided green campaign to recycle everything, the comedy/not-really-horror classic has been targeted for a remake, according to a report from Deadline Hollywood. By original producer Rob Cohen no less, who would also like to direct. He certainly has experience behind the camera -- "xXx," "The Fast and the Furious," "The Skulls," "The Rat Pack" -- I'm just not sure he's the right guy to do this, even if his heart's in the right place. Rob CohenThat headline literally called me up and begged to be used. Who am I not to oblige? "xXx" and "The Fast and the Furious" director Rob Cohen is finished working with Vin Diesel for the forseeable future. Cohen, who had been set to direct the gravelly-voiced actor in "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage," has now backed out of the project, according to a report in Variety. Cohen has instead turned his attention to "Medieval," a blockbuster action romp that the director describes as "'The Maginificent Seven' in the Middle Ages."

Cohen will be working off of a script from Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, with New Regency financing/distributing the film through Fox and "Terminator Salvation" director McG serving in some sort of production role. Cohen studied anthropology and European history at Harvard, which is what sparked his interest in the project. The Variety report offers no story details, but cites "sources" as saying that "the action brings together warriors from disparate cultures." Read More...
