It was only a year ago the world learned that Ridley Scott, the director of "Alien," would be directing a big screen adaptation of the classic Parker Brothers board game "Monopoly." Then, earlier this year, MTV exclusively learned from producer and Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner that the focus of the plot would be the world's financial markets.

While that may very well still be the plan, it wasn't always the case as the story was originally conceived. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, "Looking Glass Wars" author Scott Beddor -- he conceived the original "Monopoly" pitch -- goes into great detail on the ideas that eventually brought a director of Scott's caliber on board. We all learned over the summer that Ridley Scott, director of the original "Alien," will be returning to the franchise he created to direct a prequel. Given the series' overarching story, fans very reasonably speculated that a prequel would take a look at the events immediately preceding the first movie.

It seems that may not be an accurate assumption anymore. Scott, who in London recently to support his daughter's entry at the London Film Festival, took some time out to chat with Empire about some of his plans for the prequel. He doesn't drop any specific narrative bombs, but there is a general outline of the "when" fans can expect to be deposited into. Read more...

It's been almost a week since Ridley Scott was in the trades. Did you miss seeing his name attached to another potential directorial gig? Well, this latest Scott news doesn't concern a new project. He has long talked about doing a movie about the Gucci family, which would presumably climax with the murder of former fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci, who was gunned down in 1995 by a hitman hired by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. Now, according to Variety, Angelina Jolie has been offered the part of Reggiani.

Despite having more anticipated projects, like the "Alien" prequel (which we'd love to see Jolie star in), and more marketable ideas, like the "Monopoly" board game adaptation, on his plate, Scott is still actively developing "Gucci." The film is reportedly a priority for Fox 2000, which is in the process of hiring someone to rewrite the script. The story will span three decades, focusing not just on Maurizio Gucci's death but on his family's fashion empire in general. Read more...

The recent UK miniseries "Red Riding" condensed four lengthy crime novels into three feature-length episodes. Now Columbia Pictures wants to squish everything into a single movie, and the studio is looking to Oscar-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian ("Schindler's List") to handle that task, according to Variety.

Columbia is also said to be negotiating with Ridley Scott to direct the adaptation, but it's hard to imagine the "Blade Runner" director having room in his pipeline to commit to anymore films. After he finishes his "Robin Hood" movie, Scott is attached to helm the board game-adaptation "Monopoly," the prequel to "Alien" an adaptation of "Brave New World" and his sci-fi pet project "The Forever War." Oh vampires... you pop culture darlings. You drink the blood of humans, turn into bats, abhor garlic and melt in the sunlight. Or sparkle, depending on what kind of vampire. And yet, despite all of these potential pitfalls, you've captured our hearts. Like it or not, vampires are here to stay. At least for the next little bit; we'll see what happens once the "Twilight" series caps off with "Breaking Dawn."

While the Stephenie Meyer series continues to enthrall teens and pre-teens everywhere, other filmmakers are looking towards more mature content. There's Matt Reeves' "Let Me In" of course, an Americanized remake of Tomas Alfredson's Swedish blood-sucker flick, "Let the Right One In." And "Daywalkers." And "Priest."

Now there's another one, according to Variety: the eternally busy director/producer Ridley Scott has turned to his old pal and "Gladiator" collaborator John Logan to write an adaptation of Jonathan Ainsley's vampire novel, "The Passage." And the band plays on... Read more...

Cam GigandetPaul W.S. Anderson was finishing up post-production on his franchise-melding sci-fi flick, “AVP: Alien vs. Predator,” when he sat down to read a script that very much reminded him of one of the progenitors of his film: Ridley Scott’s 1979 deep space horror classic, “Alien.”

The script was simply terrifying, Anderson told MTV News in a recent interview. It was based on an original idea as opposed to the sequel-itis Hollywood had fallen victim to, and it contained mind-bending sci-fi concepts. He decided he had to make the movie. Read more...

AlienMany movie lovers struggle when asked what their favorite films of all time are, but not me. My answer has been and always will be "Aliens." I'm not saying that it's the very best movie ever created, but it's certainly the one that most inspired me as a fan of what the movie medium can achieve. It should therefore come as no shock that the "Alien" franchise at large is unquestionably my favorite franchise in cinema history.

I love Ellen Ripley. Sigourney Weaver holds a special place in my heart for bringing one of the most courageous, cunning and capable heroines out there to the big screen, owing no small thanks to both Ridley Scott ("Alien" director) and James Cameron ("Aliens" director). Indeed, while Scott's contributions to the "Alien" universe are enormous -- after all, he literally invented the wheel in this case -- it's the realization of Ripley that was the secret ingredient in both "Alien" and "Aliens." Zoe BellAll of us here at MTV are excited for Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel. The director hasn't had anything to do with the series since the 1979 original, which is a bonafide classic. To honor Scott and his lasting contribution to badass women in film, we've paired up the lovely duo of MTV contributor Jenni Miller and Photoshop ninja/digital producer Sohyung Kang to produce a magical list of five leading ladies who could rock Ripley.

Although there aren't any hard and fast deets out there concerning Ridley Scott's prequel to "Alien," I've got my fingers crossed for a female badass to rival Sigourney Weaver's iconic Ripley. Since Weaver has stated publicly she doesn't think Ripley could be part of an "Alien" prequel, I have a few suggestions as to who could fulfill the role of cinema's favorite alien-killing, kitty-saving, space-feminist. Ridley ScottIs it intervention time for Ridley Scott? The man is helming the still-untitled "Robin Hood" adventure and he already has plans to direct the "Alien" prequel and a "Monopoly" adaptation as well. Today, the director is ramping up yet another project, making Scott either a brave new director or a shameless workaholic.

However you want to describe him, Scott is nonetheless throwing himself towards "Brave New World," based on the classic Aldous Huxley novel of the same name. Scott's been attached to the film for quite awhile, but today brings word from The Hollywood Reporter that Leonardo DiCaprio is joining the fray as a producer with an eye for a starring role. "Apocalypto" writer Farhad Safinia is set to pen the script. Read more...
