Reese Witherspoon picked up an Oscar in 2005 for her performance as June Carter in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line," but she's been fairly quiet since then. Working of course, but there's one listing on IMDB for her that's had me curious for ages. After all, it's not every day that you pair a performer of her caliber with James L. Brooks, executive producer of "The Simpsons," for an as-yet-untitled comedy also starring Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. So when MTV reporter Akshay Bhansali ran into Witherspoon last week at the Avon Foundation for Women Awards Gala red carpet, he just had to ask her for an update, perhaps even a title, on the mysterious project.
"We don't have a title, we just wrapped on Saturday," Witherspoon said. "We've been shooting it for the past six months." And what exactly is "it"? Previous reports indicated that the actress would sit at the apex of a love triangle, with Rudd's white collar executive and Wilson's professional baseball pitcher. Read more...
It's the first November of 2009, which means it's time to pull that lever, touch that screen or figure out whatever newfangled contraption your district has provided: today is Election Day, so cast that vote!
I put that exclamation point in there not because I'm excited to vote in New York's mayoral election, but because Election Day gets me thinking about what a rich topic elections have been for cinema. Combining intrigue, corruption, passion and the odd sex scandal, politics in general and elections in particular have made for some big screen gems over the years. Here are my favs. Read more...
Reese Witherspoon is going to play a drug dealer... but not the kind that runs drugs across borders or deals in shady corners. She'll instead be the kind who deals out prescription meds at the pharmacy counter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon is taking the lead in the cleverly titled "Pharm Girl," and will be producing it under her Type A banner.
The story centers on a woman who gets a job at a top pharmaceutical company, and rises quickly through the ranks, probably after doing her time hawking drugs, pens and pads to doctors and hospitals all across our great nation. As she becomes more successful within the company, she begins to see it's seedy underbelly. Read more...
If a girl you liked had Jack Nicholson as a father, would you be too scared to ask her out? Even if that girl was Reese Witherspoon? I would think so, but then this isn't a situation I would ever find myself in. Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson will however, according to The Hollywood Reporter: Nicholson is "in talks" to take the role in an untitled romantic comedy from James L. Brooks.
The romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon as a professional softball player who is torn between two handsome, available men: Rudd, a nice, ordinary guy, and Wilson, a rakish fellow with one heck of a fastball. It clocks in at 94 miles an hour. This is an important point. I'm not sure why, but that's about as specific as THR gets with regards to the story. Read more...
Is it possible to love Reese Witherspoon more than before? "Star Trek" fans just might, after seeing the mega star hit the red carpet at the premiere for her new film "Monsters vs. Aliens." Witherspoon wore a futuristic silver and green mini dress and flashed Vulcan gang signs (ok fine, it was just the Vulcan salute) at cameras. No reports as to any vocalization of "live long and prosper" from the actress, but I'm sure Spock would still be proud.
Now the only question is: Why? Anyone?
Anyway, back to the clothes. Witherspoon's attire could make for a really cool, modern look for the next round of star fleet uniforms, if future iterations of the Star Trek franchise moved forward in time after this year's origin story. (Check out a shot of Reese's dress after the jump, plus see all the "Monster vs. Aliens" stars in our premiere gallery.) Read more...
If monster movies and alien invasion films are cool, how do you bump it up a notch? How about having the two clans battling it out on a worldwide scale? That's the broad view of DreamWorks' "Monsters Vs. Aliens," an animated flick coming out March 27 and starring the voice talents of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Will Arnet, Keifer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Renée Zellweger, John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Rainn Wilson, Hugh Laurie and (believe it or not) more.
Check out an exclusive, never before seen clip below, and stay tuned for more coverage of "Monsters Vs. Aliens."
Movies about the failing economy are all the rage these days. Ridley Scott is choosing to tackle it via a board game. Baz Luhrmann plans to teach us a lesson by remaking "The Great Gatsby." Fox is doing the obvious and just developing a sequel to "Wall Street." But one director is planning on tackling it by introducing science and satire.
According to Variety, Paul Giamatti, Sacha Baron Cohen and Reese Witherspoon have signed on to star in Alexander Payne's "Downsizing." Giamatti will play a man who decides to escape his economic woes by undergoing a process to shrink himself. Depending on which Variety story you read, Witherspoon either plays a woman he meets after shrinkage, or his wife who decides to stay normal sized at the last minute. Cohen will employ his manic comedic skills and play a dual role: a tiny Spaniard, and his normal sized brother and business partner. Read more...
It's been a rough few years for longtime admirers of Harrison Ford. There was "Hollywood Homicide" and "K19: The Widowmaker" (which had the distinction of actually being worse than it's horrible title made it sound) and we're going to take the high road and not even get into "Firewall." But thankfully maybe the massive box office success of the four "Indiana Jones" this past summer will propel Mr. Ford to bigger and better things once again? Maybe?
Ford told us about the progress of a fifth Indy film the other day but before that one gets off the ground he told us he's set his sights on one of two projects: "I have a comedy that’s been developed by J.J. Abrams and a drama that I developed that talks about the pharmaceutical industry. We haven’t sorted out which is first yet." Read more...
