Kevin Smith has never been one to hide his views and opinions, especially on hot-button topics, so it couldn't come as a surprise that after the "Red State" director stopped by MTV News, he planned to head downtown to check out the Occupy Wall Street protests and perhaps finally get a straight answer about what the demonstrations were all about.

"You hear people online go, 'It's this. It's that.' You never know unless you go down there," Smith told MTV News' Josh Horowitz. "So I'm going to go down there and talk to some cats."

The movement intrigued Smith for both it's uniqueness and the way it seemingly hearkens back to some of the civil unrest of previous decades. "There's no Hyrda head, so you want to talk to a bunch of people to find out what is this," Smith said. "It sounds kind of cool. You haven't seen any sort of spontaneous civil disobedience like this in a long f---ing time."

Smith encouraged everyone to go visit the protests just to be a part of history and to find out what it was all about for themselves. "Something like that bears looking at. We live in history every day of our lives," Smith said. "Jump in and touch it. Don't just read about it online."

Marion CotillardIf there was still a small part of you that thought that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's casting in "The Dark Knight Rises" as some cruel joke, let those fears officially be put to rest.

Warner Bros. released a statement today announcing that Christopher Nolan's oft-rumored "Inception" collaborators are indeed a part of "The Dark Knight Rises," though not necessarily in the roles you'd expect. Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, a board member at Wayne Enterprises, and Gordon-Levitt has been tapped for John Blake, a Gotham City cop under Commissioner Gordon. Despite that, though, our friends over at Splash Page think Nolan might still be keeping some tricks up his sleeve. They think there's still a chance Cotillard could be playing Talia Al Ghul, and we're betting that there's more than meets the eye to JGL's cop as well.

After the jump, "Fast Six" gets a writer, "Red State" makes a profit, and finally some good news for "Gravity."

Not unlike Jake Gyllenhaal in "Source Code," you can relive the first five minutes of Duncan Jones' new film over and over again.

Yahoo Movies got the first look at "Source Code," the trippy sci-fi thriller that forces leading man Gyllenhaal to relive the last eight minutes of another man's life to try to stop a threat that will kill millions of people in downtown Chicago. Needless to say, these first minutes of the movie end with a bang.

There's more news out there today beyond "Source Code." After the jump, find out what the hold up is on "Ghostbusters III," which cast members are returning for "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" and what the Westboro Baptist Church thought of "Red State."

Kevin Smith knows what it's like to come under fire, as he so eloquently explained during our "First Take: Live With Kevin Smith" interview earlier in the week: once every mainstream media outlet has called you "fat" in their headlines, there are very few insults remaining that can really make a dent on the psyche.

Which is probably why Smith remains undeterred by the legion of film fans and commentators who have taken him to task over his decision to distribute "Red State" all on his own. After indicating on Twitter that he'd be awarding distribution rights for his new horror flick in a live auction following the Sundance premiere of "Red State," Smith abruptly made the solitary bid on the film and awarded it to himself. Some bloggers and fans felt cheated by Smith's actions. But Smith doesn't see it that way.

"What is so wrong with being entertaining in your presentation? What gives people the right to be like, 'He's a liar!' Are you kidding me?" Smith told MTV News when the topic of the "Red State" auction came up. "People instead look for something to be mad about. They don't want to tell the story. No, the story they want to tell instead is like, 'He said he was gonna sell it and he didn't! What a jerk he is!'"

Kevin Smith has been very deliberate about what he's revealed and what he hasn't when it comes to "Red State." The politically and religiously-minded horror film is certainly a change of pace for the filmmaker, and it shows in what little we've seen – from the eerie character-centric teaser posters all the way through to the unforgettably haunting trailer.

With that in mind, make no mistake about it: what Smith is showing you in this exclusive clip from "Red State" is deliberately chosen. The scene he's selected features some of the movie's most prominent players, including Oscar-nominated actress Melissa Leo and Michael Angarano.

Details on the scene are past the jump!

Kevin SmithKevin Smith is many things; chief among them, he is the man responsible for some of the greatest comedies that the 1990s and 2000s have known. But that reputation is about to undergo a horrific make over by way of "Red State," the filmmaker's latest indie effort that thrusts a considerable cast (including John Goodman and Michael Angarano) into the blood-soaked world of religious fundamentalism.

You've likely heard about "Red State" by now, and if you haven't, you will soon: Smith is returning to his indie roots by taking the horror flick out on a multi-city tour where fans can get a sneak peek well in advance of the film's proper October 2011 debut. But you can learn a whole lot more about "Red State" even earlier than that right here on MTV.com.

As a reminder, we're proudly presenting "First Take: Live With Kevin Smith," a special live-stream interview with the director airing on MTV.com this Tuesday (February 8th) from 3 PM – 4 PM EST!

Kevin Smith's now-infamous "Red State" post-screening antics, in which he announced he was buying back his film to distribute on his own, was the talk of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. But some of his "Red State" cast members opted to talk about Smith's next (and allegedly, final) project instead, "Hit Somebody."

During the "Red State" shoot, Smith talked with some of his young actors about appearing in the upcoming project, which is based on the Warren Zevon hockey ode of the same name. Nicholas Braun is playing the lead role of hit-happy Buddy McCracken and Kyle Gallner will portray a Gretzky-like hockey wiz. And correct us if we're wrong, but we don't believe Michael Angarano's involvement with the project has been previously reported. Until now.

"[Kevin"] said, 'Learn how to skate and learn how to speak in a Russian accent," Angarano told us.
