FROM MTV MOVIES: While "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" opened to $90.1 million this weekend, showing the franchise has perhaps sprung a leak domestically in its fourth installment, the new film set a five-day international opening record of $256.3 million.
Disney is reportedly convinced this latest "Pirates" could pass the $654 million international total for 2007's "At World's End." The takeaway from all this box-office chatter is we likely haven't seen the last of the swashbuckling series.
In fact, development on a fifth film is already under way, with a draft of a script from Terry Rossio, who also penned "On Stranger Tides," in the hands of Disney execs and both director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer signaling their interest in returning to franchise. The question, however, is whether or not star Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Jack Sparrow.

Haters, get ready to hate: I believe it's time for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise to sail firmly into Geoffrey Rush's hands.
No disrespect intended towards Captain Jack Sparrow whatsoever — I love the character to pieces and imagine that we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the coming years — but I'm equally enamored with Rush's comparatively underrated Barbossa, and I think we're at the point where the formerly dead pirate needs to get his hands on the franchise. I'll give you five reasons why after the jump.

Without Johnny Depp would -- or should or could -- the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies even continue? That's the big question on deck after a recent article from The Hollywood Reporter.
With "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" just a few weeks away from release, the publication spoke with Depp, who has played the now-iconic Captain Jack Sparrow in the wildly successful films since 2003, about the future of the franchise and his place in it. They report that not only has Terry Rossio already turned in a script for a fifth "Pirates" movie which Disney wants to make in 3D, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer is a go again.
But what about Depp? He told THR the decision for him to take part in the fifth, yet-to-be-titled "Pirates," "Boils down to story, script and filmmaker." In fact, it sounded like there was some reluctance on the actor's part to sign on immediately. "It's not something where I would say, 'Let's shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012," he said, adding, "We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me."
This raises some big question marks. What would Disney do if Depp said no? Would they dare continue "Pirates" without him in Captain Jack's boots? Would fans jump ship if he did, too? Shiver me timbers, it's too much to think about.
Until the Johnny/"Pirates" mystery is solved, check out the rest of today's big casting news from Hollywood, including Brendan Fraser's slew of new projects and Malin Akerman's attachment to "Rock of Ages."

Despite all odds (and a few predictions on the Mayan Calendar), "Fast Five" is finally here! The fifth installment in the street racing franchise just opened and already broke the record for highest-grossing Universal picture with a midnight release. While the critics have given it mixed reviews, one star thinks it might be the next "Citizen Kane."
Meanwhile, the highly anticipated summer comedy "Bridesmaids" screened last night and the tweets are alive with commotion. We can't remember the last time an all-female comedy has gotten so much buzz but it's understandable when you get a load of the egregiously talented cast. Some well-respected actors and comedians were in the audience last night and somehow, someway, they got us even more excited.
And we've got some of the funniest things Hollywood tweeted about the beautiful wedding most Americans slept through.
I'm @TravisHelwig and this is Twitter-Wood for April 29th, 2011.

Break out the rum (only if you're of age, of course): The first trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" has dropped anchor on the Internet courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, and it will not disappoint fans of the series.
This may be Johnny Depp's fourth time wearing Captain Jack Sparrow's tattered pirate rags and half-drunken smirk, but if the actor is growing weary of the role it certainly doesn't show. In "Pirates 4," Captain Jack has eternal life on the brain, so he spearheads an expedition to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. As he explains in the trailer, there will be three dangers along the way: mermaids, zombies and Blackbeard. The mermaids, you see, enchant sailors with their beautiful visages and that whole "we're naked from the waist up" thing -- but as a couple of unlucky gents find in the trailer, kissing a mermaid can land you a one-way trip to Davy Jones' locker. The danger of zombies is pretty self-explanatory. And Blackbeard, well, he's plain eeeevil -- and, just to drive home that point, he's played by always formidable baddie Ian McShane. Read more...

Someone at Disney better be out buying a whole lot of rum, because we're going to be getting a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow in the near future.
The fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, "On Stranger Tides," has finally wrapped principle photography, and Disney must have really liked what they saw — because according to HitFix, we're going to be getting two more "Pirates" films after "On Stranger Tides" hits theaters in 2011.
Just like "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End" were shot back-to-back as the second and third "Pirates" movies, these next two installments will be filmed back-to-back whenever Disney can get its stars free, presumably at some point in 2011 after Johnny Depp is done filming "The Lone Ranger." Without official studio confirmation, it's safest to take this latest news as a rumor for now — but it's one heck of a rumor, to say the least. Read more...

Walt Disney Pictures announced today that it'll be giving Jack Sparrow fans quite the festive gift this holiday season: the first trailer for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."
The trailer will debut online at 1 p.m. PST (4 p.m. ET) on Monday, December 13, and will also run ahead of Disney's "Tron: Legacy" when that 3-D flick hits theaters on Friday, December 17.
Johnny Depp reprises his iconic role as adventure-seeking, perennially tipsy pirate Jack Sparrow in "On Stranger Tides," the fourth installment in the swashbuckling, blockbustering franchise and the first to be directed by Rob Marshall. It's also the first film in the series that doesn't co-star Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. But not to worry -- a couple of new additions should ease the pain of those losses. Read more...

The cry emanating from Disney today probably sounds something like this: Hi-ho, Verbinski! Deadline confirms that the Mouse House and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have officially tapped Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, to reunite with star Johnny Depp for the studio's reboot of "The Lone Ranger" franchise.
Depp is set to play Tonto, a Native American warrior who nurses an injured Texas Ranger back to health after his entire party (save himself, of course) is decimated by a band of outlaws. Once strong like bull again, this Lone Ranger dons a mask and, with Tonto by his side and his trusty steed Silver beneath him, hunts down the aforementioned outlaws. Read more...

Disney has released the teaser poster for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and it certainly is a tease -- so much so that the name of the film doesn't even appear on the image. Neither does the name or visage of the movie's bankable star, one Johnny Depp, a.k.a. Captain Jack Sparrow, for that matter. In fact, the only writing on the poster is the film's May 20 release date and a subscript alerting moviegoers to the fact that Capt. Jack's fourth big-screen voyage will be in both IMAX and eye-patch-popping 3-D.
To be fair, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise is so well-known at this point that one look at the image is all it takes to know what it's promoting. And one could argue that the skull on the poster is Depp's face, minus the devious smile and the flesh, of course. Either way, we're sure this is just the first of 73 character posters, bus wraps and billboards the studio will be releasing in the push up to the movie's 2011 release -- so there will be plenty o' time to get Depp's smirking face out there. Take a gander at the poster after the full poster below. Read more...
