Earlier this week, I reported on some comments made by "Avatar" director James Cameron made about "Piranha 3D" and its use of 3-D serving only to "cheapen the medium." In my reporting of the news, I took issue with that sentiment. "Avatar" did something special, sure, but not all film is created equally. Just because so-called "important" films are being produced in the new format, it doesn't mean there's no longer a place for schlocky genre film. That's my argument anyway.

Unsurprisingly, the "Piranha 3D" folks agree. Producer Mark Canton issued a response to Cameron's comments through Dimension Films PR. I'll warn you: it's pretty lengthy. Perhaps overly so. Canton makes the same point several times, and he gets a little mean in places. Which isn't to say that he's not justified. He's right about Cameron forgetting his roots, and the roots of the filmmakers making those "important" films he referenced.

Should Canton have risen above it and just let the comments go? Maybe. Is it so bad for Cameron, a guy who can say that he's made the two highest-grossing films of all time, to take a few honest licks? Nope, I don't think so. Everyone needs to be humbled now and again, even the King of the World. Read Canton's statement after the jump. (via Movieline) Read More...

James Cameron has been talking, as is his wont. The supremely knowledgeable filmmaker has been doing the press circuit in support of this past weekend's re-release of "Avatar" on 3-D screens. It was inevitable that someone would eventually ask him about "Piranha 3D." After all, "Piranha II: The Spawning" was his directorial debut... sort of. So when asked about the new 3-D release during an interview with Vanity Fair, Cameron let loose with his opinion.

"You’ve got to remember: I worked on 'Piranha 2' for a few days and got fired off of it; I don’t put it on my official filmography. So there’s no sort of fond connection for me whatsoever. In fact, I would go even farther and say that... I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but ['Piranha 3D'] is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like 'Friday the 13th 3-D.' When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip. And that’s not what’s happening now with 3-D. It is a renaissance—right now the biggest and the best films are being made in 3-D. Martin Scorsese is making a film in 3-D. Disney’s biggest film of the year—'TRON: Legacy'—is coming out in 3-D. So it’s a whole new ballgame."

I'm going to overlook that "never... throw other films under the bus" comment -- too easy -- and focus on the 3-D. With all due respect to Mr. Cameron, and I have much for him, I disagree with the statement that there's something wrong in some way with "Piranha 3D" throwing back to the bygone days of '70s and '80s horror. Sixth place isn't necessarily the most ideal position to land in during an opening weekend, but in the case of "Piranha 3D," the performance was good enough to warrant a sequel. In a press release, Dimension Films confirmed that development is already underway on a new "Piranha" installment with director Alexandre Aja and producer Mark Canton back for round two. You know what that means, right? That's right — it's conjecture time!

After the jump, we've listed some suggestions for the "Piranha" sequel — but be careful, as major spoilers lie ahead! Read More...

If you're afraid of man-eating creatures that lurk in the ocean, I would strongly advise you to stay away from "Piranha 3-D," director Alexandre Aja's latest blood-splattering thriller featuring a bunch of beach bums getting munched on by a legion of the titular human-hungry fish.

But if you're anything like me, then you're probably not satisfied by the amount of horrific animal 3-D action seen in "Piranha." No, you want more blood, more animals, more 3-D, more everything. Although I'm not in a position to pull the trigger on a studio's next big 3-D animal horror hit, I can certainly toss out some pitches to the bigwigs in Hollywood!

After the jump, check out some of the crazy animal action we would like to see in 3-D! Read More...

"Piranha 3D" arrives in theaters this Friday. Killer fish, excessive gore, 3-D effects and, of course, Hollywood treasure Jerry O'Connell. With this incredible confluence of awesome, don't you think the movie that wasn't fit for a clip screening at San Diego Comic-Con deserves an Oscar? I sure do. So does the cast. They even cut a video to convince you. Even if you can't actually cast votes. Listen to their appeals though, and once you're convinced reach out to your local Hollywood representative with a strongly worded letter.

Somewhere out there sits a blogger in his boxer shorts writing a dissertation-length post about the connection between James Cameron and "Piranha 3D."

Here's the CliffsNotes version: Cameron made his feature film debut in 1982 with "Piranha II: The Spawning" ("The Terror is Back....But This Time it Flies!"), effectively ending the fishy franchise until this week's "Piranha 3D," the trailer for which ran before Cameron's "Avatar" last December.

Still too long for you? How about we turn to Mr. Jerry O'Connell, star of "Piranha 3D," for a pithier take on the Cameron/"Piranha 3D" connection. Read More...

The trailer for "Piranha 3-D" is now online. Don't confuse this with "Mega Piranha," which we debuted the trailer for last month. That movie features a fish eating a helicopter and the acting talents of pop star Tiffany. "Piranha 3-D," which hits theaters on August 27 features Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfus. Tough call. Might as well see both. Check out the trailer for "Piranha 3-D" below.

In an exclusive interview published earlier today on MTV.com, "Piranha 3-D" director Alexandre Aja touted the "3-D double-D boobs" you'll see in his August 27 release. He also described one scene from the movie, a 25-minute "massacre" that he believes beats the record set by "Kill Bill" for most fake blood used in a movie. The exclusive image below gives you a taste of that scene. That's my guess anyway, based on the scale of the carnage and the amount of red in the water.

It's 3-D Week on MTV.com! All this week, we're bringing you the latest news on your most-anticipated upcoming 3-D releases, along with plenty of exclusive content and the same great opinions and commentary you've come to expect from the talented MTV Movies team.

"Avatar" changed the game for Hollywood last year with its incredible 3-D presentation and "Tron Legacy" will keep that trend flying high at the end of this year, but Alexandre Aja knows what the real appeal of 3-D is: T&A. His "Piranha 3-D" hits theaters on August 27, and there'll be plenty of T&A on hand to titillate 3-D-loving audiences. Aja promises "3-D double-D boobs" along with generous helpings of bloody violence.

"I think we broke all the records in the manner of blood used," he said in an exclusive interview with MTV's Eric Ditzian. "I don't remember the exact number, but we passed 'Kill Bill.' You've never seen something like that before." Much of the fake blood is spilled during one scene in particular, involving a wet t-shirt contest. Read More...

On the one hand, catching an advance screening of "Avatar" meant I didn't have to deal with New York's get-to-the-theater-an-hour-early-'cause-we're-just-annoying-like-that crowds. On the other hand, I missed an opportunity to check out the trailer for "Piranha 3-D" that played before James Cameron's CG retelling of "Pocahontas." For that, I am sad.

But "Piranha" star Jessica Szohr of "Gossip Girl" fame roused my spirits at the red carpet premiere of "Youth in Revolt" when she talked up director Alexandre Aja's "phenomenal" vision and gave us a sneak peak at one super scary scene in the upcoming film.

The plotline is pleasantly, pulpily thin: college kids invade a sun-and-sex spring break spot, a volcanic eruption unleashes a swarm of flesh-eating prehistoric piranhas. In three dimensions. Szohr plays a local girl persuaded by Jerry O'Connell's character to take a ride on a sort of "Girls Gone Wild" party boat. The booze flows, the bikini tops come off, and then the angry fishies arrive. Filming the scene was no fun at all, Szohr told us. Read More...
