Once upon a time, Benicio del Toro was set to appear as the villain in "Star Trek 2" -- a big casting coup, considering the first movie was low on established stars. Fan speculation ranged wild on whether del Toro would be playing the infamous Khan, or... well, that was about it, really.

Things changed when Paramount and del Toro couldn't come to an agreement. Now, Variety is reporting that Edgar Ramirez is the leading candidate to take over.

"Star Trek 2" news is starting to heat up with shooting set to commence in a little over a month, and most of the recent talk has centered on the sci-fi sequel's villains. We know Benicio del Toro is in talks for one of the key villain roles, but there's another bad guy reportedly in the mix as well.

'RoboCop'Ever since Darren Aronofsky opened up with news that his ‘RoboCop’ project would be a reboot of the franchise, we’ve had plenty of questions for him about how his vision will define itself. Now, the “Fountain” and “Requiem for a Dream” director has leaked a little more insight and not only pointed out where he sees room to grow with the film, but let on that a Peter Weller appearance may not be part of the deal.

“The thing that’s exciting for a filmmaker like me about [“RoboCop”] is that it’s not as iconic as some of the other titles out there, so there’s room to do stuff with it,” Aronofsky told MTV News. “It had incredible insight into the future, and it’s still hilarious,” he added. Read More...

'Buckaroo Banzai'By Nisha Gopalan

Remember how at the end of "The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension," there was a cruel teaser for a sequel titled "Buckaroo Bonzai Against the World Crime League?" Or perhaps you don't…because that promise was made, oh, 24 years ago.

Well, MTV News chatted with that movie's co-creator/writer Earl Mac Rauch -- currently working on a slew of new Buckaroo comic books -- to find out if cinema's only neuroscientist, rock star, race-car driver, physicist, adventurist (in yo' face, Indiana Jones!) will ever bring his brand of intergalactic, space-time continuum antics to the big screen again. And the answer? Just maybe.

"We had so many ideas," says Rauch. The scribe also remembers a "Buckaroo" TV series almost coming to light back in '99, before suddenly falling apart. "The pilot was very close to happening," he laments. "We would've gone to casting." But he, too, has steadfastly hung onto the hope of another "Buckaroo" feature film and he even has a rough plot for it. Read More...
