The Artist

One of the biggest surprises coming out the Academy Award nominations from Tuesday (January 24) was how significant the SAG nominees ended up being. No SAG nomination for Albert Brooks in "Drive"? No Oscar nomination for Albert Brooks in "Drive."

It might be easy to dismiss them, but the SAG awards mean a great deal in the grand scheme of all things Oscars. The winners there often repeat later at the Academy Awards. When actors are choosing the winners, people pay attention.

Here are our picks for the Screen Actors Guild Awards:

Oldman Tinker

Well, we finally know who will be competing for Oscar gold come Feburary 26, and with everyone everywhere talking about this year's nominees, a lot of people are ticked off.

So much of the post-nomination Oscar conversation gets swallowed up by the angry cries of snubs and shutouts. While we're just as mad about some of the nominations as you are (No Albert Brooks? No "50/50"? "Extremely Loud"?), there are plenty of nominations that came as pleasant surprises and have us really looking forward to Oscar night.

Here is the list of our favorite nominations.

Oldman

For his role in "Tinker Tailor Solider Spy," Gary Oldman is getting a lot of buzz as a potential Oscar nominee. It would be his first, if you can believe it. He’s popped up in so many memorable roles over the years, but he’s never received any adulation from the Academy.

In anticipation of the hopeful good news, we came up with a list of five other actors who’ve never gotten the call either.

Hold onto your hats people, this might be the most exciting Oscar-themed story you read this week: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released an image of this year's official poster for the 84th Academy Awards.

Brad Pitt

And with that, the Oscar race is on!

Tuesday (Nov 29) morning was a busy one for the films hoping to vie for Academy Awards in February. The New York Film Critics Circle listed its winners and the Film Independent Spirits announced its nominations simultaneously in a couple hours of dizzying Oscar buzz.

Both awards are usually the earliest indication of which films could lead the pack when it comes time to announce the Academy Award nominees in January. The NYFCC were so early this year, in fact, that they had to delay their awards until after screening David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," to which they awarded nothing.

Perhaps the biggest story coming out of both announcements was the emergence of Michael Hazanavicius's ode to golden-era silent film, "The Artist," as perhaps an early front-runner for Best Picture. The film had earned raves during the festival circuit a few months ago, but faced minor backlash during it's limited release last week. Now with a Best Picture and Best Director win from the NYFCC, "The Artist" is the film to beat.

A welcome surprise came with Brad Pitt's NYFCC Best Actor win for both "Moneyball" and "Tree of Life." Meryl Streep earned the first of her expected many wins for "The Iron Lady."

While the Spirit Awards focus on smaller films, the nominations cemented "Beginners" status as the indie charmer hit of the year. The movie, which stars Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer, surprised the night before when it won Best Ensemble and shared Best Picture with "Tree of Life" at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Check out both the winners from the New York Film Critics Circle and Spirit Award nominations below.

Sure, we're really excited that Billy Crystal is now hosting the Oscars and blah blah blah but, let's face it, how cool would it have been if that "Muppets for Oscars" campaign had actually panned out?

In the few days between when Eddie Murphy exited as host and Crystal took over, there was a brief glimmer of hope that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would choose to have "The Muppets" host instead. The film is shaping up to be one of the highest-rated movies of the year, and has enough public press that the box office might soon reflect that, so (in our humble opinion) it could have been a perfect match-up. "The Muppets" screenwriter Nick Stoller agreed in a recent interview with MTV News.

"That was a really exciting three days," he said. "It would have been so good!"

Billy CrystalFROM MTV MOVIES: Another day, another headline-making story surrounding the already-turbulent 2012 Oscars. This time, the story has a more safe and familiar ring to it: Billy Crystal has officially signed on to host the show.

Crystal spilled the beans via Twitter on Thursday afternoon (November 10).

"Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions," he wrote. "Looking forward to the show."

Following Crystal's tweet, the Academy released a statement confirming the hosting news. "Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage," Crystal said in the statement. "I am thrilled to be back there."

MuppetsIt's time to play the music. It's time to light the lights, and if you ask the roughly 36,000 people who have joined online campaigns on Twitter and Facebook, it's time for the Muppets to host the Oscars.

After two days of stealing headlines, the 84th Academy Awards have founds themselves without a host. It didn't take long after Eddie Murphy announced his resignation as host for a Twitter account, @MuppetOscars and Facebook group "The Muppets Should Host the 2012 Oscars" to start to gain momentum. Both accounts date back to before Murphy was selected by then-producer, Brett Ratner, to host the show, and now with the new hosting flux, the accounts have exploded in popularity. Each profile gained thousands of followers in a matter of hours.

Eddie Murphy

And just like that, he's gone. Not even 24 hours after director Brett Ratner resigned as producer of next Feburary's Academy Awards amid controversy, host Eddie Murphy has stepped down as Oscars host. Whether Murphy would soldier on without Ratner became part of the discussion soon after the producer parted from the ceremony, and now the world has its answer.

No matter how you look at it, this is a disappointment. Whether Murphy had succeeded or failed, the comedy icon needed to answer the question once and for all: "Does Eddie still have it?"

FROM MTV MOVIES: In a move that falls right in line with the old adage "actions speak louder than words," director Brett Ratner has stepped down as producer of the 2012 Academy Awards.

Ratner submitted his resignation to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization in charge of the Oscars, on Tuesday (November 8), according to a statement posted on Oscars.org. The "Tower Heist" director has been making headlines over the past few days — first, due to his comments about a sexual relationship with Olivia Munn, then at a screening of "Heist," where he used a gay slur, claiming that "rehearsal is for f--s."

"He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself," Academy President Tom Sherak said in the statement. "Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent."
