And, pop culture obsessives that we are, the talk of this killer soccer tournament inevitably crosses over into fictional territory, as we look for connections between the Cup and our favorite movies. Less than a week into the South African competition, we've selected our favorite big screen soccer stars and suggested cinematic musical instruments to replace the dreaded delightful vuvuzela.

'The Hangover'by Ryan J. Downey

The shenanigans Zach Galifianakas and crew get up to in "The Hangover" are nothing compared to the protagonist in director Todd Phillips' debut. The maniacal star of 1994's "Hated" slashed himself with razor blades, crapped on nightclub stages and verbally sparred with Geraldo. And that guy -- late punk legend G.G. Allin -- was a real person.

Considering Phillips' deep roots in punk rock, heavy metal and other subcultural genres, defining musical moments like The Cramps and Danzig songs in "The Hangover" or the Metallica and Black Flag jams in "Old School" make a lot of sense. Skate-punk hero Mike Vallely, whose band Revolution Mother was invited by Philips to write a track specifically for the movie, cameos as the tuxedo rental guy who hands "The Hangover" crew their clothes on the freeway. Warner Bros. was interested in developing a sequel to "The Hangover" before the movie was even finished. The film's stars talked loosely about their ideas while promoting the soon-to-be smash in the run up to its release. MTV can now confirm "The Hangover 2" -- or whatever it ends up being called -- is 100% happening, according to director Todd Phillips.

"We were thinking of sequel ideas when we were shooting, which sounds cocky, but we were doing it more because it was just fun to talk about ideas while hanging out on the set," Phillips explained. "Two weeks ago I was saying, 'let's see how it works out.' Now that the movie has really connected, it's something we're doing for sure." Read More...
