Getting "Predators" into theaters wasn't easy — just ask Robert Rodriguez, who wrote his first draft of the screenplay in the early 1990s. Although the script never made it into production, the folks at 20th Century Fox turned to Rodriguez once again when the idea for a new "Predator" yarn came about. With gritty films like "Sin City" and "Grindhouse" under his belt, Rodriguez had plenty of new experience to bring to the table with "Predators" — but even then, he still needed a pair of fresh eyes on the material.

"It's almost like there's three movies in there," Rodriguez told MTV News about developing the plot of "Predators." "You could have split it up into three pictures. I didn't even know what to do with it, because I'd worked on it so long ago. I worked on it so long — about a year — that it was always tough to crack. I needed fresh eyes on it."

Those fresh eyes came in form of director Nimrod Antal, who joined the "Predators" project and offered his own unique take on the material. Read more...

I spent most of my weekend at home, crying, because I wasn't in Austin to see the South By Southwest premiere of footage from Nimrod Antal's upcoming sequel, "Predators." The original was one of the formative action flicks for a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, a sci-fi jungle romp in which the muscular Austrian bodybuilder (playing a military man, naturally) engaged in a game of cat-and-mouse with an alien hunter armed with high explosives and stealth technology.

"Predators," best characterized as an indirect sequel, goes for more of an ensemble approach. A group of people from various combat-oriented organizations wake up on a distant planet with no memory of how they got there. What they do know is that they're being hunted. Despite Schwarzenegger's absence, one of the stars -- Adrien Brody -- made an effort to keep the spirit of the original alive in "Predators," as he told MTV's Josh Horowitz over the weekend.

"I have tremendous respect for Schwarzenegger and what he's built," Brody explained. "He's built so much from his dedication to his physique. And obviously I'm not hired for that. I really respect what he's done-- he's awesome in 'Predator.'" Read more...

This Friday at South by Southwest in Austin, Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal will debut the first footage from "Predators," their updated take on the classic alien invasion horror franchise. The story takes place on the predators' home planet, as a group of humans — including Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne and Topher Grace — are hunted for sport by the alien baddies.

With just days to go until SXSW, MTV News had a chance to chat with co-star Alice Braga about her role, Brody's commitment to packing on muscle and the possibility that original franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger will make a cameo in the film.

MTV News: So some footage is about to debut in Austin. Have you seen any of it yet?

Alice Braga: I haven't seen. I saw it on set, some of the things. I'm really excited because it was a really cool project. We had a lot of fun on set. By what I've seen, the photography is beautiful. Gyula Pados is the [director of photography]. And Nimrod Antal is the director. But the predators, fans, they look really cool! I was really scared. The guys that play them, they're really tall. If you haven't been tuned in already, Nimród Antal is a name you're going to be hearing a lot more of in the future. The director is in the midst of steering "Predators," the Robert Rodriguez-produced reboot of the classic alien franchise, toward the big screen.

While shooting on that sci-fi flick continues, Antal's latest movie, the heist flick "Armored" arrived in theaters last Friday. In a recent conversation, star Matt Dillon, who plays an armored car security guard who finds himself in the middle of a high stakes robbery, couldn't stop singing the praises of his up-and-coming director. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that "Predators" is actually happening, especially when names like Robert Rodriguez, Nimrod Antal and Danny Trejo are thrown into the mix. But it's happening. Heck, it's already started.

Antal, the director of "Predators" and this weekend's "Armored," spoke with Coming Soon about the project recently and revealed that shooting has already occurred in Hawaii.

In the interview, Antal defended the controversial casting of Adrien Brody as the film's lead, which some fans reacted against due to the actor's lean physique — a far cry from the Arnold Schwarzenegger of yesteryear. Read more...

Naturally, Robert Rodriguez's "Predator" relaunch has been the focus of speculation ever since it was announced this past spring. With the "Grindhouse" director keeping purely to a producing role, speculation has been rampant as to who would take the director's chair. Neil Marshall ("Doomsday") was attached earlier this month, and the possibility that the gore-happy director would tackle the franchise was one that caused rejoicing all over the Internet. But Marshall and Predator are not to be. Instead, Ain't It Cool News has the news straight from Rodriguez that Nimrod Antal will be helming "Predators."

Antal isn't as widely known as Marshall, but he has the fine "Kontroll" and "Vacancy" under his belt, and "Armored" hitting theaters this December. He's shown a talent for tight, terrifying films so far, and is widely buzzed to be The Next Big Name if only he could get a project with a nice, big budget.
"Predators" could be just the thing to make his career. Read more...
