I've been adhering to a self-imposed ban on all things "Inception." I found the first trailer to be utterly captivating in a non-revealing sort of way, in many ways reminiscent of how I felt after seeing the debut trailer for "The Matrix." Subsequent ads have spoiled some of the story particulars, most notably (spoiler alert?) that the wacky vistas we've glimpsed are quite literally the stuff of dreams. The story in some way deals with people who have the ability to explore sleeptime fantasies and nightmares. To what end I have no idea, but this isn't the first time we've seen Hollywood explore the REM state.

Dreams are an old motif in film, stretching all the way to Hollywood's earliest efforts. Sometimes they pop up in the midst of a story, the better to illustrate a particular character's fears and anxieties. Other times they serve as a framing device, with most of the story in question occurring in a sleep-created fantasy world. In honor of the Friday release of "Inception," I've decided to take a look back at some of my own favorite dreamscapes from Hollywood's past. Read More...

Don't worry, it's all just a dream. Certainly, the teens in this week's "A Nightmare on Elm Street" remake would love for that classic storytelling trope to be true. Regardless, dreams still play a major role in the re-imagining of the horror classic—as they do in countless other films and television series'. Whether part of a big plot twist or just a quintessential element in the overall story, dreams and nightmares continue to have just as much presence in the fictional world as they do in real life.

After the jump find five prime examples of movies in which the brain's subconscious world of make-believe plays a role, for better or worse. Spoilers abound obviously, but hit the jump to find out what dreams may come. Read More...

Who would ever have thought Freddy Krueger would be the one to save the day? His new trailer is an easy pick for highlight of the week. The Promo Police have arrest warrants out on the rest of the week's offenders, who are at large and should be considered extremely dangerous. While "Nightmare on Elm Street" catches parole, "Repo Men," "Ondine," "The Karate Kid," "Peacock," "How To Train Your Dragon" and "Valhalla Rising" are all wanted and being sought for questioning.

The Good: Making a fictional story seem like a reality via advertising is a brilliant concept. Whether you care to see a film about Repo Men ripping artificial organs out of customers who can’t afford them, these universally curious sayings will grab your attention. Read More...

There's a new trailer online today at MySpace for the "Nightmare on Elm Street" remake. No talking, just watch:

A Nightmare on Elm Street Trailer 2

Have to say, that is one badass trailer. There are money shots galore even as it keeps Freddy's (Jackie Earle Haley) bathed in shadow. Hopefully it stays that way until the movie hits theaters; the best kind of fear is that which grows out of being kept on the edge of your seat in anticipation of something scary.

There's also a new poster that debuted earlier this week, to go along with the trailer. Check it out after the jump. Read More...

Jackie Earle HaleyFROM SPLASH PAGE: Jackie Earle Haley has made quite the on-screen comeback starring as Rorschach in “Watchmen” and as Freddy Krueger in “Nightmare on Elm Street,” so it only makes sense to wonder — what’s he doing on television?

To be fair, Haley’s small screen arrival comes in the form of “Human Target,” the new Fox series based on the DC comic book. Still, as some see network television as less reputable than film work, Haley’s decision to star in the show might appear questionable. Apparently, it’s not a notion lost on the actor himself.

Jackie Earle HaleyIf you were ever skeptical about New Line remaking the classic horror film "Nightmare on Elm Street," your fears may be relieved by who they have cast to wield Freddy's finger knives. According to Variety, New Line has cast Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic slasher, Freddy Krueger.

Haley's name was on the wish list of many fans (including our own Larry Carroll), and the "Watchmen" actor even teased us with the possibility. "“I just have to say I have no idea; I’m so busy trying to still reconcile Rorschach. I’m curious about [‘Nightmare’], but I don’t know.” Read More...

Jackie Earle HaleyMovie geeks spent months talking about how cool it would be to see Michael Chiklis as The Thing, and sure enough, he got cast in “Fantastic Four.” Samuel L. Jackson went out of his way to lobby George Lucas, and he wound up in the prequels. Now, there’s a new geek-fueled movement afoot – and one “Watchmen” star couldn’t be more flattered.

With the enormous opening of “Friday the 13th,” Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners have moved on to their next re-imagining, “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” And as we pointed out in a recent article they’re looking for someone to replace Robert Englund as Freddy – and some vocal fans think Jackie Earle Haley would be perfect for the role.

“You know, I did hear about that just recently,” the Oscar-nominee smiled when we asked him about the Freddy rumors recently. “A lot of people have been asking me.” Read More...

'Nightmare on Elm Street'

Now that “Friday the 13th” holds the record for biggest horror-movie opening weekend of all time , and Michael Bay’s firm grasp on Hollywood’s crown has become tighter than ever, that noise you hear is pens swish-swishing hurriedly across contracts for the next Platinum Dunes project: The remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”

But who will play Freddy Krueger? With 61-year-old veteran actor Robert Englund out of the picture, here are a few of the high-profile actors who could slip into the role for a sleeker, 21st-Century take on the maniacal murderer:

Jackie Earle Haley – He’s got a bald head, a sarcastic/sadistic charm, and an Oscar nomination on his resume. Still not convinced that the “Watchmen” star has what it takes to play the “Elm Street” tormentor? Check out his performance in “Little Children,” where he plays a fractured, self-mutilating freak with a history of preying on innocent kids. It sure wouldn’t seem like much of a stretch to imagine a few of those neighborhood parents setting Jackie Earle on fire, only to be haunted for years to come.
