Godzilla DVDGareth Edwards certainly knows his "Monsters," and now he's moving up in the world. After wooing critics at SXSW and Toronto with that cheaply made alien-invasion indie, the filmmaker became a hot commodity in Hollywood. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Edwards has accepted Legendary Pictures' offer to direct "Godzilla," and the big, green, Tokyo-destroying machine is ready to stomp his way back into theaters.

Legendary picked up the rights to "Godzilla" in March 2010, around the same time Edwards was making a splash with "Monsters." It's been 13 years since Godzilla invaded Hollywood, so in our current environment of reboots, remakes and sequels, it's high time for the famed monster to make a comeback. But based on the less-is-more style Edwards employed in "Monsters," this version is sure to be a bit more subtly made than Roland Emmerich's blockbuster take on the beast. Read more...

"Monsters" divided the opinions of the MTV staffers who saw it, but all agreed that it's something very different. Personally, I enjoyed it. It's an unusual little film, similar to "Cloverfield" in the way it serves up an unusual twist on a traditional genre tale. It's also a road movie marked by an offbeat romance. What's odd is that this trailer doesn't really sell it that way. I get much more of a monster movie vibe here; while there are certainly elements of that at work, it is not the focus. You'll be able to decide for yourself soon; "Monsters" arrives in theaters on October 29 and hits VOD a month earlier, on September 24.

With Labor Day safely behind us, weekly movie releases can now officially be considered as part of the fall slate. Yes, yes... fall technically starts on September 22. Screw that noise though. Summer blockbusters are done. So begins the race for the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards and all of the other many prestigious awards that will be handed out in the coming months.

What are you most looking forward to seeing? "TRON: Legacy"? "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"? "The Social Network"? Please let us know. I'm going to use this opportunity to run through 10 upcoming fall releases that don't necessarily number among the major tentpoles. Even if you've heard of them, these (mostly) smaller-scale productions are worthy of your attention in the coming months. Read more...

I've been hearing good things about "Monsters." I certainly like what I see here in the newly released trailer. "Paranormal Activity" certainly wasn't the first low-budget effort to enjoy huge success, but it, along with "Cloverfield," certainly seems to have triggered a wave of genre films of the sort that haven't been popular since "The Blair Witch Project." Now we've got this, "Skyline," "Battle: Los Angeles," "Buried" and probably a few more that I'm forgetting.

"Monsters" though, it's about as small as small can get, production-wise. The film came together under the supervision of a five-person crew, plus two actors. The trailer certainly suggests a larger team, but that's it apparently. The story picks up after an extraterrestrial force has arrived on the planet; the story follows the two leads as they make their way through the infected zone at the US/Mexican border. "Monsters" arrives as a VOD title on September 24 and it hits theaters on October 29. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Read more...
