Jeremy RennerIt was nearly 10 p.m. after a long day of shooting on location in Dubai on "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol," but Jeremy Renner was still full of energy. Maybe he was still amped on adrenaline after weeks of perilous stunt work. Just one look at photos from the "Mission" setTom Cruise treating the 2,217-foot-tall Burj Khalifa tower like it's the world's tallest jungle gym — makes clear just how nuts the shoot has been.

Whatever the case, Renner was stoked to be honored during MTV News' Thankful Week as one of the actors we're most grateful for in 2010. During our extended chat — which you can read here — we touched on everything from the "Mission" shoot and his upcoming superhero turn in "The Avengers" to why it's now difficult to head into his local Starbucks. But one particular bit of "Mission" news jumped out: Renner confirmed that he is indeed being groomed to take over the franchise from Tom Cruise. Read More...

Tom CruiseLook! Up in the sky! It's a bird. It's a plane. It's... Tom Cruise?

That's right. This weekend, the ballsy actor proved once again that when it comes to sacking up for crazy movie stunts, there's no one more game than he is. On October 30, Cruise strapped on a harness to scale Dubai's Burj Khalifa skyscraper, which, at 2,717 feet, is the world's tallest building ever. Of course, Cruise wasn't doing it for sh--s and giggles (though we do get the sense he relishes stuff like this); the stunt is part of what promises to be a fairly awesome action sequence in the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, "Ghost Protocol."

The photo above offers a taste of just how high up Cruise was dangling -- he was hanging from the building's observation deck on the 124th floor -- but The Daily Mail has a few others to really get your jaw dropping. Our favorite is the close-up of Cruise from inside the building. It offers a true sense of just how much the guy is enjoying himself. Read More...

Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 3Just yesterday, Christopher Nolan kindly asked fans to stop referring to his next flick as "Batman 3" and instead to address it by its proper name, "The Dark Knight Rises." Now, Tom Cruise has followed suit, revealing that his fourth impossible "Mission" as superspy Ethan Hunt won't be boring old "Mission: Impossible 4" or "Mission: Impossible IV" or "The Untitled Fourth Installment in the Mission: Impossible Franchise." Instead, it will bear the official title of "Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol."

According to Reuters, Cruise, director Brad Bird, and co-stars Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton made the announcement at a press conference in Dubai, where "Mission Impossible 4," er, "Ghost Protocol" is currently filming. Read More...

M. Night Shyamalan returns to his horror roots with today's release of "Devil," the first film in The Night Chronicles. In "Devil," five strangers find themselves trapped inside of an elevator, with the human personification of the devil secretly posing as one of the members of the group. It's not quite as scary as Shyamalan and Josh Horowitz's "Escalation," but it's pretty darn close.

While "Devil" certainly takes elevator horror to creative new heights, it's not the first film to emerge with some truly iconic elevator scenes. After the jump, check out some of the most memorable elevator scenes in cinema history! Read More...

Tom CruiseLike MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg, I too am a fan of "Mission: Impossible III," and I'm happy to hear that series star Tom Cruise and "III" director J.J. Abrams will reunite for a fourth outing with Ethan Hunt and the IMF gang.

What really catches my interest is the latest news from The Hollywood Reporter, which confirms TV Guide's earlier scoop of Abrams and Cruise's return to the franchise. It's not the confirmation that has my spider-sense tingling but the insinuation that Cruise might no longer be the face of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Citing an unnamed executive source, the THR story mentions that he might hand the reigns over to a younger actor, or even to an ensemble. Read More...

Tom CruiseContirbuted by Jeff Sneider

Some random AICN reader calling himself ‘supastring’ wrote in to report that Tom Cruise was on some popular program called “Smap Smap” in Japan where he revealed that he has started working on the story for a fourth film in the “Mission: Impossible” series, and that he’s been “thinking about how to stage a big action sequence in downtown Tokyo.”

Some of you might bemoan the idea of another "Mission: Impossible" film but I, for one, have always preferred Cruise’s Ethan Hunt to Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne, or any of the modern incarnations of James Bond, although to be fair, I am a Tom Cruise apologist who thinks the man is incapable of giving a flat-out bad performance.

Of course, this should be treated as just a rumor at this point but if “M:I:IV” were to happen relatively soon, we wanted to stay ahead of the development process and recommend 10 directors who might be a good fit for the series. Read More...
