"Resident Evil: Afterlife" is confirmed as the next chapter in the zombie series, a rare success case in the world of video game-to-film adaptations. It may not be a monumentally successful franchise along the lines of "Twilight" or "Harry Potter," but "Resident Evil" movies have a habit of performing well with audiences whenever they're released.
What we know so far: the shoot is already underway, with a planned 3-D release for the movie late next year. Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter will reprise their roles as Alice and Claire Redfield, respectively. Also confirmed are Shawn Roberts as the villainous Wesker and "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller as Claire's brother Chris. Read more...
FROM MTV.COM: With the fumbled release of "The Fourth Kind," sneaky-hip viral movie marketing shoots itself in the foot. It's been 10 years since the makers of "The Blair Witch Project" used the Internet to plant eerie suggestions that the events in their film were real. Today the Internet is patrolled by a legion of bull-sniffing bloggers, so any attempt to do the same thing again is doomed to fail. And the picture expends so much of its energy trying to pound home its preposterous assertions that there's very little left over to animate the story, which is in any case a hopeless jumble.
The movie is an attempted alien-abduction thriller. It begins with what is probably the most laughable opening scene of the year. Walking through some misty woods and straight up to the camera, the film's star, Milla Jovovich, informs us that everything we're about to see is true — that it's "supported by archived footage" and is "extremely disturbing." But then we're also told that the names and professions of the characters have been changed. Why would that be, if they're all real people? The silly premise instantly begins to crumble.
We viewers can't tell exactly what is so frightening in the below clip, the latest in our week of Halloween exclusives, from "The Fourth Kind," directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Maybe Milla Jovovich can't either, but she at least knows it's "not an owl." Whatever it is, it scared the crap out of her. That scream is impressive.
It was 32 years ago that director Steven Spielberg introduced viewers to the "third kind" of extraterrestrial encounter -- contact -- in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." The title "The Fourth Kind" refers to the next stage in encountering aliens: abductions. The movie, based on fact, looks at a small Alaska town where a string of alien-related disappearances occurred.
Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn are in for the honeymoon of a lifetime when their trip to Hawaii turns deadly in director David Twohy's "A Perfect Getaway." Their holiday escape is anything but when they find out there are psychopaths stalking and murdering tourists on the Pacific islands.
Honestly, what were they expecting? Didn’t they know that tropical locations are a known hot-spot for homicidal maniacs? We’ve put together the honeymoon planner’s kit detailing locations avoid if you’re not a fan of taking an axe to the face. Read more...
All sorts of news flying around the web today. Some of this would have run earlier on the blog, had it not been for a midday technical SNAFU. Here's a round-up of what we missed:
-- I don't know if it's the "first" to hit the web (I'm pretty sure it's not), but IGN UK have posted their review of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." It's mostly high praise for Stephen Sommers' high-energy action flick, and I couldn't be more pleased. I'd been feeling uneasy about "Joe" in recent months, but all of those fears were literally BLOWN THE EFF UP when I saw the movie myself this past weekend. (IGN UK)
-- "Monster Squad" director Fred Dekker revealed at a weekend screening of his family-friendly classic that he's currently hard at work on a script for "Cliffhanger 2." For those who don't recall, "Cliffhanger" stars Sylvester Stallone as a mountain climbing rescue worker who ends up pursuing an international gang of thieves along snowy mountain peaks. Word emerged back in May that a reboot was in the works, and now it looks like we have further confirmation. (FirstShowing) Read more...
I love me some David Twohy. Dude definitely has some clunkers in his portfolio -- I'm looking at you, "Waterworld." I don't care though. He wrote and directed "Pitch Black," which also means that Vin Diesel's Richard B. Riddick character is Twohy's creation. He also wrote classics along the lines of "Warlock," "Critters 2: The Main Course" and a little-known movie called "The Fugitive."
Now Twohy has climbed back into the writer/director's chair after an extended post-"Chronicles of Riddick" break. "A Perfect Getway," starring Chris Hemsworth (aka Kenneth Branagh's Thor), Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant and Steve Zahn, follows a newlywed couple (Zahn and Jovovich) who are off on a hiking honeymoon in Hawaii. Somewhere along the trails they run into some shady hikers and... well... things get weird. Check out the new trailer to see for yourself.
Considering Milla Jovovich's talent for slaughtering hordes of undead in the numerous "Resident Evil" installments, the title of her newest film is very appropriate! But she won't be packing guns and knives in this one. According to Variety, Jovovich is set to play an alcoholic stripper in "Keep Coming Back," a comedy that marks the directorial debut of actor William H. Macy.
The story centers around a sheltered young man who joins an Alcoholics Anonymous group solely to be close to Jovovich, the woman of his dreams. I'm sure there's a lot of guys out there who would happily pretend to be alcoholics to get close to Jovovich, so Macy's film scores a gold star for realism. Read more...
