Brad Pitt

And with that, the Oscar race is on!

Tuesday (Nov 29) morning was a busy one for the films hoping to vie for Academy Awards in February. The New York Film Critics Circle listed its winners and the Film Independent Spirits announced its nominations simultaneously in a couple hours of dizzying Oscar buzz.

Both awards are usually the earliest indication of which films could lead the pack when it comes time to announce the Academy Award nominees in January. The NYFCC were so early this year, in fact, that they had to delay their awards until after screening David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," to which they awarded nothing.

Perhaps the biggest story coming out of both announcements was the emergence of Michael Hazanavicius's ode to golden-era silent film, "The Artist," as perhaps an early front-runner for Best Picture. The film had earned raves during the festival circuit a few months ago, but faced minor backlash during it's limited release last week. Now with a Best Picture and Best Director win from the NYFCC, "The Artist" is the film to beat.

A welcome surprise came with Brad Pitt's NYFCC Best Actor win for both "Moneyball" and "Tree of Life." Meryl Streep earned the first of her expected many wins for "The Iron Lady."

While the Spirit Awards focus on smaller films, the nominations cemented "Beginners" status as the indie charmer hit of the year. The movie, which stars Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer, surprised the night before when it won Best Ensemble and shared Best Picture with "Tree of Life" at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Check out both the winners from the New York Film Critics Circle and Spirit Award nominations below.

Gollum GollumHere's the best news you've heard all day: Ian Holm will be back for "The Hobbit."

We literally have no other information other than that, but Peter Jackson took to his Facebook to clarify that the voice we heard at the end of his recent video blog was Martin Freeman's, not Holm's from the previous "Lord of the Rings" narration. That being said, Jackson dropped a bomb on us by stating that "Ian will be returning as the older Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit." Ahh, the wonders of Facebook.

The rest of today's news is after the jump, including the newest boss in town on "The Office," an extended trailer of "Green Lantern" and the newest "Hunger Games" casting announcement.

Meryl StreepBy Sterling Wong

In a stroke of serendipity (or good timing), the first picture of Meryl Streep as British conservative icon Margaret Thatcher was released earlier today, just a couple of days after Ronald Reagan’s centenary celebrations.

Deadline has the photo, and yes, after her successful portrayal of Julia Child “Julie and Julia,” Streep’s now bringing another iconic figure to the big screen in “The Iron Lady,” a biopic of the controversial former British prime minister.

The look captured in the picture is one of uncertainty, as Streep almost looks like a deer in headlights. It’s a good sign that indicates that the film will probe deeper beneath the impervious facade of Britain’s face of the '80s.

FROM MTV.COM: In the hours since the early morning announcement of the 82nd Academy Award nominations, reactions from the Hollywood elite recognized by the Oscar gods have been rolling in.

Sandra Bullock, who nabbed a nod for her turn in "The Blind Side" (also a Best Picture selection), told The Hollywood Reporter, "I'd always assumed that the road to Oscar was planned. I thought people chose projects that were considered 'Oscar-worthy.' No one wanted to make this film. I didn't want to make this film for the better part of the year. Everyone is as blindsided — can I say that? — as I am."

Meryl StreepEditor's Note: This was supposed to publish yesterday at noon. Not sure what happened there. Sorry about that, y'all.

The Golden Globe nominations are the talk of Tinsel Town today, but it's not necessarily the awards themselves that people are focused on. Oftentimes, the Globes are an interesting indicator of what we might see at the bigger event — namely, the Academy Awards.

If this year's Globes are any indication, then it's safe to say that Meryl Streep is going to get some loving at next year's Oscars. Streep had two starring roles this year in the forms of "It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia," both of which are contending for the Best Musical or Comedy category. As a result, the actress's biggest competition this year is herself, believe it or not. Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: Wes Anderson is comfortable with his crew of Hollywood buddies, a bunch he started cobbling together along with college roommate Owen Wilson for his debut feature, "Bottle Rocket." In subsequent movies, Anderson's hipster squad grew to encompass Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and others, as he continued to cast them in films like "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Darjeeling Limited."

So when it comes to his first animated film, the stop-motion Roald Dahl adaptation "Fantastic Mr. Fox," no one should be surprised that Wilson, Murray and Schwartzman lend their voices to the animal characters. But was it always going to be this way? Did Anderson have these actors in mind from the beginning, or did the decision to cast them develop later on? And how did Oscar winners like George Clooney and Meryl Streep sneak into this tight-knit group?

Remember the “Mamma Mia!” movie that came out last year? The one that starred Meryl Streep and was based on the stage musical, which itself was based on a whole bunch of ABBA songs from the '70s? Yeah, well that movie is now the highest-grossing film of all time in the UK box-office, having beaten James Cameron’s “Titanic.” Lemme state that again: “Mamma Mia!” is the highest-grossing film of all time in the UK box-office.

So, there’s gotta be a sequel, right? Read more...

In the below video, Jason Schwartzman takes us behind the scenes of director Wes Anderson's upcoming stop-motion animated adaptation of the Roald Dahl children's book, "Fantastic Mr. Fox." In addition to clips and behind the scenes footage, you'll learn how the actors delivered their lines and acted out their parts on location, even though they won't physically appear in the movie.

"Fox" hits theaters on November 13. Use this brief featurette then to whet your appetite for Anderson's "Darjeeling Limited" follow-up, which features a strong ensemble cast that includes Schwartzman, George Clooney, Bill Murray, Meryl Streep, Owen Wilson and more.

What gives? Wes Anderson is a pretty popular director, right? I mean, "The Royal Tenenbaums" is one of the best movies out there! And then there's "Rushmore," "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" and "Bottle Rocket"! ...and "Darjeeling Limited." I suppose.

Still, I'm surprised at the lack of a banner credit in this newly released trailer for director Wes Anderson's adaptation of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." He rounded up many of his (awesome) usual suspects for the cast, including Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwarzman. PLUS George Clooney and Meryl Streep. Enjoy the stop-motion foxiness!
