Smurfs-- Martin Scorsese + HBO = "Boardwalk Empire." The cable network signed off on an 11 episode series from the "Departed" director, chronicling the early life of Atlantic City. It's on folks. (Variety)

-- You've got a sneak peek at this one off to the right side of this post. The very first CGI Smurf has been revealed, from the upcoming movie based on the classic cartoon. (PCV Blue)

-- I'm a sucker for anything involving Bill Murray. The actor is set to star alongside Robert Duvall, Lucas Black and Sissy Spacek in "Get Low," which premieres at this month's Toronto International Film Festival. Cinematical just got some exclusive stills and a clip, which I urge you all to go check out. (Cinematical) Read more...

-- Ian McKellen told attendees at an all-night "Lord of the Rings" screening that an actor has been selected to play Bilbo in "The Hobbit." There are no further details than that, though McKellen also mentioned that he'll be getting the script "within the next week." This falls very deeply into the rumor territory for now, though I have little doubt that a script exists or that there's a Bilbo short list. Especially since "Hobbit" director Guillermo del Toro told us as much in an interview. (TheOneRing.net)

-- The word is the "Fight Club" and "Zodiac" director David Fincher is all set to direct the Aaron Sorkin-penned "The Social Network," also known as "the Facebook movie" in some circles. As you might expect, the story follows the rise of the beast that we call Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg. Sorkin and Fincher make for odd bedfellows; I'll definitely see this one. Michael JacksonA sad day indeed. Michael Jackson wore many hats over the course of his long career. He was an international superstar, and he leveraged that status to dip his toes into anything that interested him. In the world of film, Jackson enjoyed unparalleled access. He worked with luminaries, artists and auteurs who shaped the course of the medium as strongly as the pop star himself did in the music world.

Jackson was a pop cultural icon and his touch will forever be felt in all facets of entertainment. Here are just a few of the stars he hitched to in film during his long and storied career. Read more...

Leonardo Dicaprio. Mark Ruffalo. Ben Kingsley. Max Von Sydow. And of course Martin Scorsese. These are the key elements working to get me very excited about "Shutter Island," the latest novel from Dennis Lehane ("Mystic River") to be adapted for the silver screen. Apple dropped the new trailer today, and it's good. Take a look and then hit the jump for some thoughts.

Frank SinatraMartin Scorsese has already dealt with 19th century Manhattan's street toughs in "Gangs of New York," and he's responsible for many a Boston back-stabbing and head-shooting in "The Departed," but the Oscar-winning director will be flying to the moon for his next film's location -- in a manner of speaking, at least.

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to produce "Sinatra," a Mandalay Pictures Production to be directed by Martin Scorsese. The screenplay will be written by "Field of Dreams" writer Phil Alden Robinson. Read more...

Daniel Day-LewisMartin Scorsese is looking to someone other than Leonardo DiCaprio for his next project. According to Variety, the legendary director is in talks with Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio del Toro, and Gael Garcia Bernal to star in "Silence."

This will be the third collaboration between Scorsese and Day-Lewis, who have had a happy director-actor relationship in both "The Age of Innocence" and "The Gangs of New York." (It must be extremely happy -- you might remember that Scorsese lured Day-Lewis away from being a cobbler in Italy and back to acting to be in "Gangs.") Read more...

- Martin Scorsese to reteam with Robert DeNiro for "I Heard You Paint Houses," the story of a mob assassin believed to be involved in the death of Jimmy Hoffa. (Variety)

- "Kung Fu Panda 2" officially announced for June 3, 2011. Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, confirmed to return. (Coming Soon)

- Win a chance to star in Chuck Palahniuk's next book by getting as many people as possible to see "Choke" this weekend. (Chuck Palahnuik)

Martin ScorseseSaying that a man who directed “Raging Bull,” “Taxi Driver,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “The Departed,” and many more has helmed some great films isn’t exactly stepping out onto a ledge. Saying that that very same man’s best work is in front of him? Now we’re talking!

Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island,” (or “Ashecliffe,” we’re not exactly sure) is shaping up to be one of the famed director’s best, co-star Mark Ruffalo said.

“It is Martin Scorsese’s playground with this movie. He gets to do everything he loves about film,” Ruffalo insisted. “He does noir, fantasy sequences, dream sequences, madness, suspense, tough urban stuff. It’s absolute madness and twist upon twist. This could be one of his great films.”

The film, based on a book by “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone” author Dennis Lehane follows two US Marshalls (Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio) and their investigation into the disappearance of a mental patient from a Massachusetts asylum. Read more...

Mark WahlbergLast year, Mark Wahlberg let slip to MTV News that the talent behind "The Departed" (namely director Martin Scorsese and screenwriter William Monahan, both Oscar winners for the film) were hard at work on both a sequel AND a prequel to the crime drama about corruption in the Boston police department.

"We may do another one, because it's based on a Hong Kong film ['Infernal Affairs'], and there is a trilogy. So we may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys," he said. In fact, Wahlberg even talked of a substantial role for Scorsese favorite Robert De Niro.

So, Qui Bono? It's now more than a year later. Where does the project stand?

"They're [still] developing it," Wahlberg sighed. "If it can be better than the first, then great. I'll be all for it. I'm not interested in going for the paycheck. I love 'Godfather 2’ but, then again, I don't like 'Godfather 3.'" Read more...
