Paranormal Activity

Today, the existence of "Paranormal Activity 4" was announced -- not so shocking considering the franchise’s hefty popularity with fall crowds.

The most recent installment completed a rough trilogy, which begs the question of what a further film could touch upon that wouldn’t feel trite or done. Audiences may be sick of Micah and Katie by this point, and the series’ trademark found footage look hasn’t received any serious updates. It could be time for a serious rejuvenation, which is why we came up with this list of some directors we wish would get hired.

M. Night Shyamalan

Better late than never? Perhaps encouraged by his daughters, M. Night Shyamalan has finally taken a seat on the Twitter train (he’s now on Facebook, too). His first tweet, on November 25th, was a characteristic homage to his childhood hero:

I was thirteen years old when I tried to call Steven Spielberg. I made my mom call and pretend she was my assistant. He didn't take my call.

To commemorate this auspicious occasion, we present to you a collection of bold predictions: the five ways M. Night Shyamalan will reinvent Twitter.

Hunger GamesThe hunt for Gale and Peeta is over. After weeks of speculation, Lionsgate has announced that Liam Hemsworth ("The Last Song") and Josh Hutcherson ("The Kids Are All Right") are heading for the big screen version of Suzanne Collins' insanely addictive series "The Hunger Games" to play male leads Gale Hawthorne and Peeta Mellark respectively, reports Hollywood Crush.

Hemsworth and Hutcherson join Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who was chosen to play "Hunger Games" heroine Katniss Everdeen last month. Both actors expressed interest in the highly anticipated project, which will be directed by Gary Ross. Hutcherson disclosed his feelings on the character, saying: "The character is so much who I am — self deprecating, a people person. And he’d be such a great character to play!"

Meanwhile, back in January, Hemsworth had hinted to MTV that he could very well be taking on the role of the stoic, first true love of Katniss, Gale. While Hemsworth had not met with Ross at the time, he confirmed he did read the script and told us, "[It's] a really, really cool story," adding, "[It's] super dark. It's all young kids in these Hunger Games, which are crazy, insane things."

After the jump, check out the rest of today's news, including Henry Cavill's thoughts on the new "Superman," the sets and scheduled shoot for "Snow White," a new addition to the "G.I. Joe" sequel and more!

M. Night Shyamalan's movies are always shrouded in the utmost secrecy, so getting him to divulge anything is near impossible. When MTV News caught up with Night on the National Board of Review Awards red carpet, we took a crack at it anyway, asking the director about his upcoming film "One Thousand A.E.," which has Jaden Smith set to star.

When we asked him if he'd be making "One Thousand A.E." his next film, Night replied, "It's starting to look like the Smith family and Shyamalan will be doing a movie together." The Smith family, you say? Of course, we had to ask if that meant that Will, Jada and Willow might also appear in the flick, to which Night laughed: "You never know. Their dog maybe... Any Smith that wants to work in my film can work in my film." Read more...

M. Night ShyamalanMTV News has always had a soft spot for M. Night Shyamalan, so we're heartened by the news that he's is getting right back in the saddle after his last big-screen venture, "The Last Airbender," failed to connect with U.S. audiences. According to Heat Vision blog, Night is looking to direct a super-secret sci-fi film he isn't writing ("The Book of Eli" screenwriter Gary Whitta is) called "One Thousand A.E.," which would be a starring vehicle for newly minted "It Kid" Jaden Smith.

Smith proved with this summer's surprise $176.6-million hit "The Karate Kid" that he can be just as big a box office draw as his dad Will, and Shyamalan is due for a hit after the back-to-back-back box-office disappointments of "Lady in the Water," "The Happening" and "Last Airbender." If "A.E." is a success, it could cement Smith's celebrity power and potentially revitalize Shyamalan's career. While the film is still looking for a studio home, Shyamalan is developing it at Will Smith's Overbrook production company and will likely end up at Sony. Read more...

Before this weekend, M. Night Shyamalan had never been to a comic conference of any kind. But luckily for fans of the "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" director, he made an exception for New York Comic Con 2010, where he turned out for an hour-long panel moderated by MTV's own Josh Horowitz. The panel was not to discuss the auteur's most recent cinematic endeavor, "The Last Airbender," however; instead, Night was on hand to reminisce about "Unbreakable," which -- believe it or not -- celebrates its 10-year anniversary this November.

Initially met with box office and critical disdain when it was released in 2000, Shyamalan's tale of a security guard (Bruce Willis) who discovers that he's a real-life comic-book hero, has come to be regarded as one of the finest superhero films ever put to celluloid.

During an illuminating panel discussion in the Javits Center's packed theater, Night talked about why he hasn't made "Unbreakable 2" (he said he felt like "a failure" after the film's icy reception), showed the audience never-before-seen story boards, and walked the crowd through his creative process. Rumors have been swirling for weeks around the follow-up to "Devil," a Friday release that marks the start of the M. Night Shyamalan-conceived/produced trilogy known as "The Night Chronicles." As we pointed out earlier this month, it seemed that "The Last Exorcism" director Daniel Stamm had been all but confirmed to helm the second "Chronicles" film, based largely on suggestive statements made in interviews by both Shyamalan and Stamm.

Now the news is confirmed. A press release reveals that Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital are teamed to produce "Reincarnate," the second "Night Chronicles" film, with Stamm in the director's chair. It was confirmed earlier in the year that Chris Sparling ("Buried") penned the script; the plan is to begin production in 2011. Shyamalan said of the director, "Daniel has a preternatural control of tone. He is an actor’s director. He’s a storyteller who understands character as much as fear."

The title of the second "Chronicles" film was initially revealed to be "Twelve Strangers." Although the title has changed to "Reincarnate," the premise of the story remains the same. As stated in the release: "While deciding the fate of an accused murderer, a jury is haunted by supernatural forces that hold the key to the case." Sounds like "Twelve Angry Men" meets "Poltergeist." I'm in.

"Devil" is the first movie in a planned trilogy for M. Night Shyamalan, who will be serving as producer for the three films. The second movie in the series has already had some confirmed news: Chris Sparling, the writer of "Buried," is developing a script. There have also been some indications that Shyamalan has found his director for the second movie, "The Last Exorcism" helmer Daniel Stamm.

Let's review the facts, starting with what Shyamalan told MTV's Josh Horowitz during a recent interview.

"I'm thinking about what the title should be and we're just now... closing a deal with a director," he said. "I'll give you a hint: his movie is coming out very soon. I'm very, very excited because I loved his movie as well and he's a whole different style of filmmaker. That's what's so exciting for me, I get to hear through somebody's eyes how they would have interpreted the story that I came up with. It's basically 'Twelve Angry Men' but they're deliberating over a supernatural trial."

Okay, stop. Let's review. Read more...

September 17 "Devil," bill as being "from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan," is the first entry in the filmmaker's so-called "Night Chronicles" trilogy. The story follows a group of strangers who one day find themselves trapped in an elevator. Not the worst thing in the world... until it becomes clear that one of them may in fact be (or be possessed by) the Devil.

Freaky.

I've been curious and pretty excited about this one every since I first read about it. The debut trailer goes a long way towards selling the premise for me. And today, as part of our ongoing Fall Preview week, we've got a clip from the movie for you to enjoy.

FUN TRIVIA FACT: The curly-haired guy in the gray suit seen in the clip is Geoffrey Arend. He made his screen debut in the memorable opening scene of "Super Troopers," scarfing magic mushrooms and talking about how "the snozberries taste like snozberries."

From John C. Reilly and Steve Carell to Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, MTV News has been pushing the proverbial envelope lately (and perhaps standards of good taste) with our "After Hours" series.

Up next for us? From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan, the latest entry in the M. Night Chronicles, "Escalation." And we've got your exclusive first look at the trailer!

"Devil," the first of the Chronicles, hits theaters on September 17. Being trapped in an elevator with a bunch of people -- one of whom may or may not be possessed by a demon of some sort -- is plenty scary. Now imagine being stuck on an escalator with a Penthouse pet, M. Night and a bunch of knives...watch below to see what we're talking about.
