There are ghosts and serial killers aplenty in movie theaters this Halloween weekend, but it appears that moviegoers are looking to celebrate the haunted festivities with none other than Michael Jackson.

The deceased pop sensation is the subject of "Michael Jackson's This Is It," the Sony distributed documentary chronicling Jackson's rehearsals for a massive concert series that never came to pass due to his death. "This Is It" unsurprisingly wound up in first place on Friday evening with $7.9 million, which brings the film's cumulative total to $19.1 million since its opening last Wednesday — but the Jackson documentary hasn't moonwalked all the way to the bank, certainly not in the way that Sony and concert promoter AEG had expected. I know where the wild things are, and apparently so do many of you as the Spike Jonze-directed "Where The Wild Things Are" captured the box office crown on its opening day yesterday. The monster-filled epic, which features the voices of James Gandolfini and Forest Whitaker, earned $12 million on Friday much to the surprise of box office analysts. Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that the film was expected to make only $30 million at best this weekend, but the excellent Friday night performance could lead the picture straight past $38 million. Wasn’t “The Soloist” hilarious? Remember all those crazy scenes of Robert Downey Jr. spilling urine on himself, and Jamie Foxx acting like he might be insane? Ah, good times, good times.

Oh wait, “Soloist” was a drama? Well, now that you mention it, maybe I shouldn’t have been laughing so much. Either way, the good news is that Foxx and Downey Jr. are reuniting for a real comedy from the director of “The Hangover.” And this time, I’m pretty sure it’ll be okay to laugh.

“Yeah, it’s called ‘Due Date,’” Jamie Foxx said of the film, issuing some high praise for director Todd Phillips, who also made “Old School” a frat-house classic. “He is the funniest guy in the world.” Read more...

After last Friday's "cheese stands alone" release of "Couples Retreat," we're back this Friday with a range of options for moviegoers of all shapes and sizes. The big one of course is director Spike Jonze' adaptation of "Where the Wild Things Are." I can't really say that it's a kids movie, but anyone who holds their childhood memories of the book close will feel some strong nostalgia for Jonze' interpretation. It's weird and beautiful and oddly aimless; this is as perfect a pairing of director and source as there's ever been.

Next up is director F. Gary Gray's thriller "Law Abiding Citizen," starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. Butler plays a family man whose life is torn away from him after his wife and kids are murdered. Ten years after the tragic incident, the widow seeks revenge on the assistant district attorney (Foxx) who allowed the killers to go free. All from the confines of a jail cell. -- Huge news. Bryan Singer is now confirmed to be directing a silver screen reboot of "Battlestar Galactica." This was reported earlier by Hitfix, but the news has now been confirmed. Fans of Ron Moore's take on the franchise shouldn't rise up in angry protest just yet. The project is literally at ground zero right now. With Singer on board, now it's time to find a writer, figure out the course such a project might take. Might Ron Moore step in to deliver a script? Anything is possible. As much as we would like to see Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx just hanging out onscreen for two hours, it's probably better that they have finally found a cast to act alongside. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Gambon, Leslie Bibb, Colm Meaney, and Theresa Randle have joined the cast of "Law Abiding Citizen." Not a moment too soon either -- the film is expected to begin shooting on January 21st.

"Citizen" centers around a district attorney (played by Foxx) who orchestrates a plea bargain that sets free the killers of another man's family. The aggrieved victim (played by Butler) then seeks personal justice from the D.A. There's no hint yet as to what roles our new castmembers will be taking on. Read more...
