Haywire

By Ryan Rigley

With the release of "Haywire" and "Underworld: Awakening" this weekend, the box office is in for a heaping helping of badass women. Both Gina Carano and Kate Beckinsale play the role of strong, female protagonist that make the men around them look like little boys. If they get stabbed or shot at, they barely even flinch. Punch them, and they'll punch you right back. These women are tough as nails, but you shouldn't think of them as woman. That would be a mistake.

Here's a list of some of the biggest and best badass female characters to ever grace the silver screen with their presence.

"Underworld: Awakening" is not your older sibling's "Underworld" movie. Times have changed a lot in the years that have passed since "Underworld: Evolution," and now leading lady Selene (Kate Beckinsale) -- and the audience -- will have to catch up with the times.

The first big change: humans now hunt the vampires and lycans, instead of vice versa. Also, according to a voice over in the new trailer for the movie, there's been an epidemic (likely humans being transformed into vamps and werewolves) that has swept the nation. Scientists have found "the one" that will lead to a cure from said infestation.

Except, maybe not. As Selene warns in the trailer: "Everything they've told you is a lie."

"Real Steel" is likely to be the coolest robot boxing movie that's been released (since, well, name another robot boxing movie), and the newest featurette for the film wants to tell you all about why it's going to be a fun adventure to watch.

Arguably the biggest draw for audiences is the boxing in the flick, and the new featurette shows off how the filmmakers used motion-capture technology to make their fighting robots seem believable. The folks behind "Real Steel" hired real-life boxers, choreographed by Sugar Ray Leonard, to stand in for the robots, which means the action fans see on the big screen is going to be legit. Of course, there's the human element of the movie to look forward to as well, but I have a feeling Hugh Jackman might be a bit upstaged by his electronic counterpart in "Real Steel."

The world has changed since Kate Beckinsale last starred in an "Underworld" flick, and now it's time for her to catch up with "Underworld: Awakening."

It may have only been five years since "Underworld: Evolution" hit theaters, but on the big screen 12 years have passed. The newly released trailer for "Underworld: Awakening" says that Selene has been held captive for more than a decade, though she has now escaped to wreak havoc on the world. The problem is that, in this world, humans hunt vampires and lycans, making this a "new war" as she says.

But something else has been released as well, adding an extra layer to the plot. And, as Selene asks, where is her former flame Michael?

Hunger GamesEarlier this week, it was announced that Hollywood newcomers Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin, Amandla Stenberg, and Dayo Okeniyi would play "Hunger Games" competitors, and now another relative unknown has been cast.

As reported by our friends at Hollywood Crush, a young actress by the name of Willow Shield will be playing the coveted role of Primrose Everdeen. The 12-year-old stars as the little sister of "Hunger Games" heroine Katniss, played in the film by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Director Gary Ross said Shield will "make an amazing Prim and we’re very lucky to have her."

Check out the rest of Thursday's biggest casting news in the biz, including Catherine Zeta-Jones' return to movie musicals and Kate Beckinsale (possibly) making a "Total Recall"!

Kate BeckinsaleVampires and Lycans, it's time to crawl back into your coffins and dodge those silver bullets: the original Death Dealer is back in action.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, actress Kate Beckinsale has agreed to return to the role of Selene for the fourth installment of Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment's "Underworld" film franchise. Shooting begins in March 2011 in Vancouver based on a script originally written by John Hlavin and revised by J. Michael Straczynski.

Beckinsale took a breather from the "Underworld" franchise by sitting out of "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" in 2009. A prequel to the first two "Underworld" films, "Rise of the Lycans" had a built-in reason to keep Beckinsale on the sidelines. In her place, actress Rhona Mitra occupied the leading lady role. Ricky Gervais in 'The Invention of Lying'Given the amount of plugs, if you found yourself watching the Golden Globes on Sunday then you'd know that host Ricky Gervais' comedy "The Invention of Lying" was coming to home video today. The film places Gervais in an alternate reality where everyone always tells the truth, giving him a considerable edge when he becomes the first person in the world "invent" the concept of fibbing. The rom-com comes to DVD and Blu-ray with a few extras including a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and a mini-doc following Karl Pilkington from Gervais' wildly popular podcast series. It's rather odd that a commentary track isn't one of the extras; you'd think it'd be a natural addition given Gervais also co-wrote the pic. But alas...

On the action side, we have Gerard Butler's "Gamer," which is basically a cross between "Gladiator" and "The Running Man." The film takes place in a dystopian future where nerds control beefy human avatars in a massively multiplayer online game. The film performed modestly at the box office, and comes to DVD and Blu-ray with a considerable amount of extras. Those include a feature-length commentary track, a three-part behind-the-scenes doc about the making of the film, and an interesting (for tech hounds) look at the groundbreaking digital RedOne camera used for the flick. FROM NEWSROOM.MTV.COM In a sea of musicians, many nominated on the recording industry's biggest night, I would imagine that it can't be easy to stand out as an actress. Yet, Kate Beckinsale -- a presenter at tonight's Grammys -- was far and away the night's best-dressed lady of the evening.

Beckinsale is impeccably dressed at every red-carpet event she attends, but tonight was something special. Wearing a long black mermaid gown (which might be her favorite look, since she also did the mermaid thing at the Golden Globes), she looked regal among her entertainer friends.
