CommonFrom the first time Clark Kent walked into a phone booth mild mannered and walked out able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, the concept of superheroes having dual identities has been almost as important to the genre as the superpowers themselves. Not so for John Stewart, Earth's fourth Green Lantern and sometimes member of the "Justice League of America" -- one of the more prominent heroes to choose not to wear a mask.

Now the actor who was cast to play him is pulling back his.

Long rumored to be in contention for the role, Common confirmed to MTV News for the first time publically that he was cast in the now dormant film, calling being picked for the role "an honor." Read more...

"Justice League of America" – what in the heck would we do without it? With no less than seven major superhero roles to fill, the upcoming George Miller production is hands down the best and most fun flick to speculate about right now, with everyone from gangster rappers to movie comedians to MTV writers weighing in with their choices for who should be in the film.

And the whole lot of us are looking at it the wrong way, "Chasing Amy" director Kevin Smith insisted.

"'Justice League' feels like it's an all-star movie to begin with and maybe they're kind of wise to cast it with unknowns," the director, who occasionally moonlights as a comics writer told MTV News. "It's not like you can put Brad Pitt in it and he's gonna be more important than f---- Batman. Or Superman. Like the characters themselves are the f---- stars of that movie. It's tricky to cast those roles - give a bunch of people a break."

Well, ok, not EVERY role needs to be used to give someone a break, Smith said. Read more...

Jack BlackAny day now, Warner Bros. seems likely to finally announce its "Justice League of America" cast, officially appointing some lucky actor as the first cinematic Green Lantern. But as die-hard film fans know, funnyman Jack Black came this close to breaking in the green and black tights just a few years ago.

"Oh yeah," he remembered recently, before making an all-in-fun reference to the WB keyholders currently auditioning actors like Common and T.I. for the superhero role. "The bastards!"

Now, Black is talking back about the "Green Lantern" movie, revealing details of the movie we'll never see. "I really liked the script that a friend of mine wrote," he remembered of the comedic take on the character. "But nobody wanted to make it; it was too weird." Read more...

Brandon Routh in 'Superman Returns'We've devoted quite a lot of space in the last few months to news on the "Justice League of America": Who wants in, who wants out, who was in AND out - but after all the discussion over DC's tag-team effort, we wanted the final word on what the flick meant for that other project they were also supposed to be working on, you know the solo one with old Super what's his name.

Apparently the last people we should have asked were the actors involved.

"I know nothing. I saw one article about 'Justice League' being made, and I thought well, how's that going to affect the future of [Superman]?" James Marsden, who played Richard White in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" confessed to MTV News. "So I have no idea. I really don't."

Ok, fine. If Marsden couldn't give up the goods we thought maybe his on-screen dad could - being a fellow journalist and all for "The Daily Planet." So Mr. Perry White - will there be another Bryan Singer "Superman"? Read more...

The AvengersStory updated: 11/7/07 @ 11:06 AM

With casting of the "Justice League of America" movie well underway, one of the biggest resulting questions is whether the Avengers, Marvel's equivalent to the JLA, will ever see their own cinematic chances realized.

To get an opinion directly from the source, we sought out Joe Quesada, Marvel's editor-in-chief, to get his take on the legendary superteam and what he thinks the chances are of getting them assembled on the big screen.

"Strictly speaking as a fan, who wouldn't want to see [an Avengers movie]," Quesada enthused, adding that for his money, "who wouldn’t want to see just two of the characters teaming up...like a Spider-Man/Wolverine movie," before placing the caveat that the chances of that happening would be "pretty astronomical."

But with the company controlling more of its own characters under the Marvel Studios label than it ever has before, an Avengers film is arguably more likely than a two-character team-up. And while Quesada wouldn't shed any detailed insight into the likelihood of it happening, he did offer up his own dream roster for an Avengers big-budget flick. Read more...

Columbus ShortWith everyone from Common to Mary Elizabeth Winstead to Jessica Biel funneling through the "Justice League of America" rumor mill almost daily, we have a new name to throw into the mix: Columbus Short.

"I was up for that," revealed the choreographer-turned-"Stomp the Yard" star, confirming that he has been approached for the part of The Green Lantern. The actor joins a long list of auditioners including T.I., Common and Tyrese Gibson, all of whom have been considered to slip on the most powerful ring in all of comic-dom.

"'Justice League' is going to be dope, it's going to be huge," grinned the fast-rising star, before dropping a second bomb: "But it's not the movie for me." Read more...

FlashFaster than the man himself, "The Flash" movie has once again changed directors – and you'll never guess whose quick hands have grabbed the franchise.

"Wedding Crashers" and "Fred Claus" director David Dobkin revealed to MTV News that he's signed with Warner Bros. to bring the fleet-footed super to the big screen in a solo project, taking over for Shawn Levy who left for undisclosed reasons.

Dobkin's film won't be the character's first appearance in cinemas, of course, with the Flash a major part of the upcoming "Justice League of America" film. But while fans wait for "JLA" story and casting announcements with bated breath, Dobkin can't help but hold his – confirming that his movie will exist in the same universe as the upcoming flick.
