Dollhouse"Dollhouse" fans, the news you've been dreading has officially arrived — Joss Whedon's latest television endeavor is dead.

The Hollywood Reporter has the breaking news that Fox has canceled "Dollhouse," the Eliza Dushku-starring series created by Whedon. The article notes that despite a DVR-induced ratings bump, "Dollhouse" just couldn't cut it by the network's standards. As a result, the series will be put out to pasture after the 13th episode of the second season. Episode 11 is currently filming. Read more...

FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: Greetings Gleeks and members of the Whedonverse! We're betting that since the news broke that Joss Whedon would be heading over to McKinley High School to direct an episode of "Glee," you haven't been able to contain your sci-fi/musical excitement.

Apparently, neither has the man himself. "I talked to him a bunch [at a party], he's really excited," noted Cory Monteith (who plays heartthrob Finn) during a "Glee" club fieldtrip to the MTV offices. "He's a big fan of the show — and [we spoke] before it actually came out that he was going to direct. He spoke to us, the cast, for an hour at this party."

TerminatorWord is running rampant today that the rights for the "Terminator" franchise are being sold off for a pretty penny. This isn't the first time we've heard about the impending "Terminator" sale, nor is it the first time such a change-of-hands has occurred — but it is the first time that "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Dollhouse" creator Joss Whedon has made a power play for the franchise.

In an open letter, Whedon offered a tongue-in-cheek appeal for ownership of the "Terminator" property, claiming that he would gladly purchase the franchise for $10,000 as soon as today should his offer be accepted. Read more...

Joss WhedonNews broke yesterday that Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" is getting pulled from Fox for the month of November, signaling the network's lack of faith in the Eliza Dushku-starring show's prospects going forward.

While the removal of "Dollhouse" from sweeps month wasn't exactly a shocker to anybody following the series' downward spiral in both the creative and commercial departments, it did prompt the show's much-beloved creator to speak out.

Following an open letter posted at The TV Addict, Whedon took to his own blog to address some of the growing concerns about "Dollhouse" and the show's November absence. Read more...

If "Dollhouse" has one defining weakness, it comes in the form of Echo, the show's central character played by Eliza Dushku. The problem isn't necessarily in the acting -- though that could be argued -- but more in the fact that, as a character who literally changes personalities from week to week, it's nearly impossible to fully latch onto her plight.

When your show's central conceit focuses on a veritable brothel specializing in the sales of attractive, impressionable human beings, the lack of an accessible main character is a tremendous problem. I think that even the staunchest of Joss Whedon's fans would agree that they've stuck with "Dollhouse" not because it's a particularly riveting television experience, but because there's enough promise for it to eventually become worthwhile.

Thankfully, season two is looking to deliver on that promise. Read more...

James MarstersAre you a fan of both “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Battlestar Galactica”? How about "MADtv"? If so, then your TV-watching dreams have come true with a casting announcement that links all three series'. Let's start with the whopper: James Marsters, who played fan-favorite Spike on “Buffy” and its spin-off “Angel,” has joined the cast of “Caprica,” an upcoming Syfy show that’s a prequel to the recently finished “Battlestar.”

Marsters will play a villain named Barnabus Greeley, described as a dangerous and unpredictable terrorist torn by his conflicting moral and carnal desires. The character appears to exist outside of the show’s primary focus, which is on two rival families: the Graystones and the Adamas (headed by Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales, respectively). Considering the actor’s appeal and sizable fanbase, it’s sure to be a major role. Read more...

Eliza DushkuAll of us here at MTV are excited for Ridley Scott's "Alien" prequel. The director hasn't had anything to do with the series since the 1979 original, which is a bonafide classic. To honor Scott and his lasting contribution to badass women in film, we've paired up the lovely duo of MTV contributor Jenni Miller and Photoshop ninja/digital producer Sohyung Kang to produce a magical list of five leading ladies who could rock Ripley.

Although there aren't any hard and fast deets out there concerning Ridley Scott's prequel to "Alien," I've got my fingers crossed for a female badass to rival the Sigourney Weaver's iconic Ripley. Since Weaver has stated publicly she doesn't think Ripley could be part of an "Alien" prequel, I have a few suggestions as to who could fulfill the role of cinema's favorite alien-killing, kitty-saving, space-feminist. I've never seen Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse." Not a single episode. Don't get me wrong, I want to. The premise -- the exploits of blank human slates who can be "imprinted" with new personas and then hired out for a variety of purposes -- is cool. And the confirmation of a coming second season makes me feel better about investing in the young series. I'm still feeling wounded after the passing of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."

In the below video, Whedon and "Dollhouse" star Eliza Dushku discuss the San Diego Comic-Con premiere of "Epitaph One," the unaired thirteenth episode from season one. I have no idea what they're talking about. It sounds like the ep was shot as a "just in case we're canceled" ass-saver, to give disheartened fans some closure. From the sound of things though, Whedon left it open enough that "Epitaph One" still fits into the continuing timeline.

The advice printed on these posters for "The Cabin in the Woods," an upcoming horror flick directed by Drew Goddard and written by Goddard and Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer" TV series) is not of the "good" variety. In fact, if you've seen even one horror movie in your life, then you know that heeding these words will likely lead you to a gruesome, untimely death.

"If you hear a strange sound outside... have sex." Seriously? Ever hear of this dude named Jason? Big guy, scary, wears a hockey mask. Always carries around a filthy teenager-carving machete. Yeah, that sound is probably him. So don't incite his anger if you like to keep your blood inside your body. Hit the jump for two more equally ill-advised posters. Read more...

Zoe Saldanaby Michael Avila

One of the more interesting panels at Comic-Con this year not specifically geared to plug an upcoming movie was Entertainment Weekly’s forum discussing the role of female heroes in modern pop culture. Sigourney Weaver, Eliza Dushku, Zoe Saldana and Elizabeth Mitchell were seated on the dais before an enthusiastic standing room only crowd. It took about 20 minutes for someone onstage to realize Saldana's and Mitchell’s nameplates were misplaced.

Before Buffy slayed, Lara Croft raided and Starbuck, er… drank, Weaver was bitch-slapping Paul Reiser and basically inventing the archetype for ass-kicking women as Ridley in James Cameron's 1986 sci-fi action flick “Aliens.” Five years later, Cameron would release “T2: Judgment Day” featuring another female action hero. Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton, paved the way for the modern-day heroine who can balance motherhood with her need to pound skulls and work out. Read more...
