Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a monumental 2012 in front of him. He's set to star in some of the year's biggest films, including "The Dark Knight Rises," Spielberg's "Lincoln," the sci-fi thriller "Looper" and Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." That isn't even counting his bike messenger starring vehicle, "Premium Rush."

But now, you can add a directorial debut to JGL's planned list of 2012 accomplishments. This year, Gordon-Levitt will helm his first movie, a comedy he wrote himself. He'll also pull star duty as the film's lead, a "modern-day Don Juan" who tries to change his womanizing ways.

Scarlett Johansson will co-star, along a yet-to-be-cast second female lead. Gordon-Levitt said that the role is one that may surprise the fans that know his previous work. "I wrote myself a helluva role, one that people wouldn’t necessarily thought of me for," he said.

Now that we're in the aftermath of the Golden Globe nominations and people everywhere are focusing on the snubs and robberies, it's an important time to reflect on the choices we are absolutely in love with.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association did manage to acknowledge some of this year's best work despite the annual longlist of snubs, so here are the picks we want to applaud from this year's field of contenders.

I kept fearing "50/50" would take a left turn onto Sappy Boulevard, plod past Preachy Junction and come to a rest in a town populated by "Dying Young," "Autumn in New York" and "Sweet November," where everyone learns pat lessons and becomes better people (except for those who die; those unfortunate folks just help us learn something about ourselves before they pass into the Great Cheesy Beyond).

"50/50" is a movie about cancer, after all, about a young man with the disease. At a certain point star Seth Rogen would have to cease being Seth Rogen, and the whole film would become some YA version of "Beaches," right?

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Based on writer Will Reiser's own experiences and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young radio producer suffering from a rare form of cancer, "50/50" pulls off the magic trick of staying consistently funny, sweet, affecting and real — and never, ever cheesy. For all these reasons and more, "50/50" lands at #8 on MTV's list of the best movies of 2011.

50/50 In a nutshell, "50/50" is movie about an otherwise average 27-year-old guy named Adam who gets diagnosed with cancer, and what happens to his life and the people in it when faced with 50/50 odds of survival.

Unlike most of the generic, forgettable fare that Hollywood churns out each year, this film is something special. With an all-star cast including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick and Anjelica Huston, you will actually care about the characters, get swept up in the story and actually feel something when you walk out. "50/50" is one of the best movies I've seen this year, and here are a few reasons why it will be one of your favorites as well.

Fixed gear, no brakes. That’s how Joseph Gordon-Levitt rolls in his new messenger-bike-catch-me-if-you-can thrill ride, “Premium Rush.” At least he’s smart enough to wear a helmet.

And it’s a good thing too, because if my count is correct, Gordon-Levitt gets hit by what appears to be not one, not two, but three different vehicles in the trailer, all of which seem to be near fatal accidents. Not only that, but he is sporting some seriously fancy bike moves. This is certainly a far cry from his previous work, without a doubt.

With the MTV Movie Awards wrapped up and the winners basking in the glory of their golden popcorn, we couldn't help but wonder about all the talented actors, filmmakers, and musicians who shared success in this year of movies — even if they didn't score at the big show last night.

Looking at past Movie Awards and the category changes that have emerged, it's interesting to wonder who might have left the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles last night with an award to their name. What if Best On-Screen Duo still existed, for example? Would that have been an instant victory for Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis? That's the question we're tackling after the jump as we get into full-on daydreaming mode about the Movie Awards categories of yesteryear and the stars of 2011.

Best On-Screen Duo (1992-2006)
Mila and Natalie showed some real intense chemistry on screen in "Black Swan." While the on-going competition and jealously between the two dancers may make them seem like candidates for worst enemies, how can anyone forget their awesome hook up scene after a night of crazy drugs, dancing, and booze? They might've lost Best Kiss, but they'd definitely get our vote for best duo!

You don't have to look far to find some serious badasses at the movies this year, but in the end, there's only room for five of these fearsome foes to compete for the Biggest Badass Star at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards — and, of course, only one of them can walk away as the winner.

Robert Downey Jr., "Iron Man 2"
Tony Stark is pretty much the epitome of badassery: he's a hard-drinking billionaire beloved by women everywhere, and he gets to enjoy his perpetual partying lifestyle while kicking bad guy butt inside the comfort of his technologically superior Iron Man armor. Doesn't get much more badass than that.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of those actors who is becoming more and more appealing as time goes by. I'm not talking his looks - which, of course, are adorable, but more importantly his top notch career choices.

MTV News caught up with JGL this week to talk about his upcoming dramedy "Hesher," and we had to sneak in a few questions about his next project with "Brick" director Rian Johnson: "Looper," the time-travel thriller co-starring Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt

"[I'm] really really excited about 'Looper,'" Gordon-Levitt said. "I’ve never done anything at all like it, and I can’t wait for people to see it. It’s a sci-fi movie, it’s a time travel story, I get to act with Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, and it’s really good."

Speaking to his experience was working with Willis - both JGL and our "Die Hard" hero play the same man in different time periods - Gordon-Levitt lit up like a Christmas tree.

JGLWe reported on it weeks ago, but it was made official yesterday: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotilliard will be joining the cast of "The Dark Knight Rises." And if it wasn't for Twitter, we'd have no idea how meta this casting really was.

According to the James Cameron blockbuster "The Terminator," the artificial intelligence in the Skynet program went live yesterday, which means that our inevitable destruction is just hours away! Since we're all about to die, you might as well read a few predictions for what might be in store for the robot apocalypse.

And a beautiful actress talks about filming love scenes! We won't give it away, but it involves lots and lots of high fives.

I'm @TravisHelwig and this Twitter-Wood for April 20th, 2011.

Marion CotillardIf there was still a small part of you that thought that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's casting in "The Dark Knight Rises" as some cruel joke, let those fears officially be put to rest.

Warner Bros. released a statement today announcing that Christopher Nolan's oft-rumored "Inception" collaborators are indeed a part of "The Dark Knight Rises," though not necessarily in the roles you'd expect. Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, a board member at Wayne Enterprises, and Gordon-Levitt has been tapped for John Blake, a Gotham City cop under Commissioner Gordon. Despite that, though, our friends over at Splash Page think Nolan might still be keeping some tricks up his sleeve. They think there's still a chance Cotillard could be playing Talia Al Ghul, and we're betting that there's more than meets the eye to JGL's cop as well.

After the jump, "Fast Six" gets a writer, "Red State" makes a profit, and finally some good news for "Gravity."
