"Barton Fink" is a difficult movie to classify. It's also one of the best efforts from filmmakers Ethan and Joel Coen, the guys behind bonafide classics like "The Big Lebowski," "Fargo" and "No Country for Old Men." Not to mention "Fink," which is held in high regard by just about everyone who's seen it. The story -- about a playwright, the titular Fink (John Turturro), who tries to beat writer's block while residing in a Hollywood hotel -- sounds fairly innocuous, but it's all in the delivery.

The movie is a touchstone within the Coen's oeuvre, but it doesn't really carry the same cult appeal that the similarly genre-bending "The Big Lebowski" does. As such, I never in a million years would have expected a "Barton Fink" sequel. And yet, that's exactly what the brothers hinted at when they spoke to MTV's Josh Horowitz at the Toronto International Film Festival, where they were promoting "A Serious Man," which hits theaters on October 2. Who can forget The Jesus? John Turturro's crazed, pedophile bowler in "The Big Lebowski" is an unforgettable character, even with no more than five or 10 minutes of screen time. He's so popular that there's long been a rumor percolating that filmmakers Ethan and Joel Coen would break out a Jesus spin-off movie. Turturro is very insistent about it, as you can see in this video from back in June...

I'm afraid that the actor's excitement just isn't enough to spur the Coen brothers into action. There's always hope of course, but MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke with the siblings last week at the Toronto International Film Festival -- where they were promoting "A Serious Man," which hits theaters on October 2 -- and things are not looking good. There's a peculiar love out there for the Coen brothers' "The Big Lebowski." Something about the quirky characters, bizarre story and hilarious writing that just sticks with people. I don't claim to understand it, but I am one of the many fans to have been caught in its tight, oddball embrace.

None of us really believe that there will ever be a proper "Lebowski" sequel, though a nugget of a rumor that's been floating around for years continues to fuel fan hopes. John Turturro's character, Jesus "The Jesus" Quintana, is a certified pedophile and master bowler. The actor has frequently mentioned the possibility of a spin-off movie, with everyone from co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman to Joel and Ethan Coen all hinting that it could indeed happen. MTV's Josh Horowitz got the latest from Turturro on the probably-never-happening project last night at the 20th anniversary celebration of Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing":

It took the great Samuel L. Jackson reassuming his SeƱor Love Daddy moniker for just a moment on the red carpet to capture the vibe in the air for the 20th anniversary screening of "Do The Right Thing" on Monday night (June 29). "It's a pretty stupendous, awesome, hot day," said the surprise attendee to the celebration. "And it's going to be a hot night, so let's all listen to some cool sounds and enjoy the renown of the major movie of its time, 'Do the Right Thing'! Waaaake Up!"

Not that the crowd assembled wasn't awake to begin with. After all, there are few films so incendiary in their time, so revered in the years that came after, so brutally funny, honest and raw. Cast and crew came out in force for the celebration of "Do the Right Thing," newly released on June 30 in a special Blu-ray edition DVD. There was John Turturro, then a green young actor, refusing to acknowledge the passage of time. "I deny it! It's not been 20 years!"
